It's good that MLB teams seeing record revenue won't be destroyed by having to pay minimum wage.
It's great that a corporation given an anti-trust exemption which protects it from competition from other businesses doesn't have to follow laws passed to protect workers from exploitive businesses.

Royals will have a chance to trade him at the deadline, meanwhile Moose is out from under the qualifying offer.  Bet he works on OBP this year.

The Angels have had some starters that are irritating to watch.  Noralsco made me crazy and the Nibbler.  Santiago for that matter.  But Oroizzi is different, I enjoy watching him pitch- of course it’s easy to root for him when he’s pitching for Tampa against the Red Sox or Yankees.
if Ordoizzi is going to figure it out it’ll be in the next couple of years, it’s a risk but there is upside.  Hate to say it but if it’s about the trout window, I make this move.  If it’s about value only, probably not (I see the prospect price as high).

Its the age of Eppler, which seems like an evolved Stoneman.  Eppler will likely stand pat but it’s got to be like a song running at the back of his head to make one or two more moves and really challenge the Astros.

So let’s get this straight: Darvish and keep the draft resources or Lynn and lose draft resources?  Arte could do it,  absorb the cost and go over the CBT luxury tax, and remove next years FA class.  But I’ll take Jason Vargas just for some stability in the rotation and flexibility in the budget.  Vargas had 3.8 WAR in 2017.   https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vargaja01.shtml
Vargas for 1 year and $11 million?

Funny.  But Dude all this is true.  Eppler looks for value, no way he’s napping and I think there’s a move left.  As spelled out numerous times on this board, including in the primer, chances are the Angels go over the tax in the next few years.

Let's think nuclear for a minute.  One of Richards or Ohtani throw less than 50ip.  One of Heaney and Skaggs throw less than 50ip.  One of Shoe, Ramirez and Bridwell aren't healthy as well.
So let's say our rotation is Ohtani, Heaney, Shoe, Bridwell and Trop.  With Barria as our #6.  That means 3 of our top 9 don't give us much.
The point of this exercise is #1, this isn't a horribly unlikely scenario, and #2, Slotting Lance Lynn into that rotation and displacing Barria to #7 looks a heck of a lot better.
If you do add another starter and by the off chance everyone stays fairly healthy, who are you displacing?
In a six man rotation, it means Ramirez and Bridwell go to the pen and Trop and Barria to AAA.  Still a reasonable scenario.
I wouldn't be disappointed if we stood pat, but adding another arm wouldn't hurt.

I’d rather sign Vargas and save the draft resources but Lynn would improve the staff imo.

I agree Kinsler will be closer to 3 War than 5, but even 2 would be great compared to the last few seasons.  A total steal considering the price.  2018 is going to be an amazing offensive year for the Angels.

Of course Arte was hoping for success for the team, but it was also a marketing move.

If the market had been obvious when Eppler made his moves, perhaps he would have chosen differently.  But maybe not.  Not only has Eppler had an excelllent offseason but he has somehow made the Angels a hugely attractive destination for FA’s next year and into the future.  Cozart at 3/39 was a fair deal, actually club friendly to me.  Upton’s Extension was fair.  Kinsler came to the Angels suddenly, but why? In part because Upton put in a good word, plus Kinsler probably had a handful of teams he wanted to play for, and likely the Angels were high on the list.  Otahni, the big O, chose the Angels.  This is not coincidence- with Eppler running things the Angels are on the way up and a very attractive destination.  Sosh also is a player’s manager and I imagine is hugely respected by the men playing the game.

Maldonado will get more rest this year with the addition of Rene Rivera.  I think the Angels have a very solid catching tandem that will control the running game and generally give Sosh a boner.

I'd say the whole team benefits from the additions, but the lineup will determine who benefits the most.
I wonder if we'll see two drastically different lineups against lefties and righties. It's pretty safe to say that Valbuena won't play against very many lefty starters. But I also think we're going to see a lot of different lineups. A lot.
I also wonder how Simmons will do as he won't likely bat in the top half of the lineup. Will Cozart continue his hot hitting ways, and will Kinsler and Calhoun Rebound? How will Ohtani do with the bat? How many games will he play? Where does Pujols hit?
Against RIghties when Ohtani isn't hitting

    1) Kinsler
    2) Calhoun
    3) Trout
    4) Upton
    5) Pujols
    6) Cozart
    7) Valbuena

    7) Valbuena (against RHSP only) -- We either see Pujols play 1B every time there is a lefty on the mound, or Cron gets this spot against lefties

    9) Maldonado / Rivera

    Other lineups include:
Against RHSP, Valbuena at 3rd, Simmons or Cozart off

If nothing develops for Maybin I could see him coming back.  I'm sure he would have fun wherever he goes but I think he enjoyed being an Angel.  Mike S would find a way to use him and in fact Maybin should probably be a 4th outfielder.  Won't happen I know but he'd make a hell of a bench player.
