405z06 reacted to nate in OCR on Scioscia and the next GM
Go through the 25 man roster over the last 10 years and show me one where there wasn't one wasted roster spot. You keep pointing to Featherston but every year the Angels have that.
You can characterize it however you want but the high OBP station to station offense has been successful. Not to mention that he ignored advanced scouting on the defensive side.
When you have a GM that is in charge of player dev and scouting, then you would think the Manager would abide. Instead he was as stubborn as he always has been and ignored the organizational philosophy and went with his own. Angels are probably two losses away from missing the playoffs for the 5th time in 6 years. The WS was 13 years ago. Some how Scioscia still lives off of that.

NO way...doesn't he know he is never going to have another job in baseball?

I highly doubt Scioscia can make more than $6 million per year.

The Angels are more likely to sign Mathis and Napoli this offseason than MS opts out.

405z06 reacted to rvt in DiPoto speaks
New here, long time reader.
1. I think Dipoto's departure was more planned than many think. One example is the real estate listing for his Newport Beach house, posted less than 24 hours after his resignation. Agent, full pictures, house looks staged.
2. I think the SS Scioscia and coaches were only a portion of the problem. Yes probably stubborn, passive resistant, and treated some analytic work as noise. Dipoto probably wished he had his own manager in there. Overall Dipoto could have felt he lacked sufficient power in the organization to implement his ideas. Limited by inconsistent (or worse) Moreno-who knows what really happened in the Hamilton fiasco? Possibly even Stoneman second guessing. The good ship Angels could have been very hard to steer-far beyond what he expected when taking the GM position.
3. Like many here I'm sad to see Dipoto go. I liked the direction he was taking the organization. We sat behind him in Tempe Diablo for two games. He was sitting with scouts in first few rows, one day with his wife. Everything I saw from him was positive, energetic, note taking, friendly interactions with others. Most did not recognize him, but looked happy to interact with fans who did. Moreno was in dugout during games. In both days did not see Dipoto interact with Moreno or Scioscia.
4. Hope for the best for him. Dipoto himself seems to accept (in statement) he may have to start lower on the totem pole somewhere. As posted many places Arte needs to butt out, and Scioscia move on or accept change. Hope one of Jerry's guys in front office eventually get the job.

405z06 got a reaction from Amazing Larry in Mike Scioscia's tenure
I don't think Scioscia will opt out and here's why:
First of all, no team is gonna come close to paying him $6M/yr. The only person in the world who thinks that highly of him is Arte.
Secondly, he will have nowhere near the hammer anywhere else that he has w/ the Angels. Those days are over except in Anaheim, and a hiring GM for another club is not gonna give Mike that authority.
If Mike wants to go do a 5 year rebuild in Philly, then maybe that is an option.
He ain't going to the Dodgers. The Dodgers front office might be the most SABR-oriented in the game. Anyone think Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi have any interest in bringing in a "Old-school" dinosaur to manage their $270M payroll? LOL
The Angels are stuck with Scioscia for better or worse.

405z06 got a reaction from Oz27 in Peter Bourjos
I watch a lot of Cardinal games, and I have just come to the conclusion that Peter just isn't a good baseball player. He alright with the glove and has great speed (that doesn't translate to steals, btw), but is just clueless at the plate. He'll be the 5th OF/ late inning defensive sub once again when Grichuk gets back. Whatever problem the Angels may be having right now, having Bourjos back wouldn't solve any of them.

405z06 got a reaction from Halos of Anaheim in Angels Trade Josh Hamilton to Texas Rangers (Official)
Not only will Arte almost be assuredly be paying a huge chunk of Hamilton's contract to make him go away, but this will be - in effect - a huge pay raise for Josh, playing in Texas instead of Cali re: zero state income taxes in TX. What is the highest bracket in CA? 13%
13% of $85M is > than $11M

405z06 got a reaction from AngelsAndRamsFan in Angels believe they have the pieces to acquire Price
Tampa seems like the type of org that would want stay away from a Trumbo-type player. I can't see them getting giddy over the 30 HR power and completely overlooking the career .299 OBP. This isn't Ruben Amaro Jr.
I've said from the beginning that the Angels have no shot of landing Price, and I will stand with that despite the report in the OP.

405z06 reacted to Angels in Jerome Williams non-tendered
The level of outrage over losing Jerome Williams has reached comedic levels. Dipoto has made many questionable decisions, but this is not one of them. You don't pay a long reliever/spot starter $4-5 million. Especially a team that is cash-strapped. You just don't.
I understand that the Angels need depth...but finding a Jerome Williams for league minimum (or close to it) shouldn't be hard to do. Just how difficult could it be to find a pitcher who is slightly above replacement level (if given enough innings)? If you are forced to rely on Jerome Williams to make 25+ starts (as he did last season), then you are screwed either way.
It's nice to have a Jerome Williams, but not for $4-5 million. For a million tops, sure. And any competent minor league farm system should have a few of Jerome Williams' at the AAA level.

405z06 got a reaction from Torridd in For those who support the trade
Meh, It's not a bad deal for either team. Grichuk is not some type of uber-prospect from what i gather.. He can't take a walk to save his life, and his upside might be a 4th OF who can PH vs lefties. Thinking he's some trade-chip that was wasted that could have gotten David Price or another ace is clueless.
Petey was the Angels 4th OFer. He was traded for a starting 3B, which was needed. They both have one really good year mixed in with some meh years and a bunch of injury-riddles years.
It's kinda a wash, IMO. It makes sense for both sides, which is why, of course, they actually completed the deal.
