I think the pitcher should be making that call. Unfortunately, I have a hard time believing any pitcher is willing to be strategic enough and put his pride aside to actually IBB a hitter.

How about the mental strength to be able to work through jams without pep talks, how about putting in the work before a game to know the game plan for a hitter or situation without a pow-wow on the mound, how about the athletic ability to throw more than a pitch every two minutes, how about showing mental toughness over the opposing player to stay more focused than the other within a shorter timeframe, how about working through your nerves in tight game moments? etc etc. —That's exciting. Pulling the plug and walking off the mound because the build up is too much for the pitcher, catcher or manager lets all of the air out of the balloon. You're in the middle of the game, so face the music and try to out-duel your competitor in the moment for our entertainment.

Why get so fussy over casual fans? They pay the bills. You can't be a nerd on every subject that interests you and you don't have to be to enjoy it.

What do you mean by "expect the best"? Shouldn't we expect it from adults even more so?

Maybe I'm discounting the importance of this topic for college age kids. The reality is that adults will be no better. Being a history teacher kinda makes this subject close to heart for you and basic knowledge. A math teacher may believe everyone needs to know when to apply a specific formula. And an English teacher may believe I should know if "age" or "aged" is correct in my first sentence.
