Scioscia and Dipoto both need to go in the off season.
    They are both equally inept.
They can still compete next year with the right moves.

for a variety of reasons - new regulations against PEDs, rising crop of young power arms, etc - batting averages have gone down across MLB in the past 5 years or so.

It's funny that some people think that $3.5 million isn't a lot of money.  What has the world come to?  It's all relative, but at the end of the day - $3.5 million is a ton of money in my book.

None of us know for sure until the discipline is actually handed down.  The New York newspapers don't exactly have a reputation for accuracy.

Again, I don't think you understand arbitration very well at all.  Public or internal pressure is completely irrelevant and MLB's arbitrator should NOT be watching the news or reading the newspapers right now.  In a perfect world, he has no idea how MLB and the public feel about A-Rod right now.

There's no telling what the arbitrator is going to do, and they have much more latitude than a judge does in a courtroom.  Lack of precedent might not even be a problem because, again, this isn't a courtroom.  It's a waste of time to predict best case scenarios for either side.

Gross miscarriage of the arbitration process?

There hasn't been a hearing yet and you've already assumed that if the arbitrator doesn't rule in favor of MLB, it's a "gross miscarriage" of the process.  We don't know what evidence MLB has yet, so it's a bit premature to throw the arbitrator under the bus.

As for the next CBA, the MLBPA is too powerful to roll over and give MLB the upperhand in anything.  This is especially true if the evidence later proves an overzealous attack on A-Rod.

Plea bargaining happens THOUSANDS of times a day in courtrooms all over the country.  I don't think it has any effect on deterring others...short or long sentence -- it doesn't matter -- people are still going to make the same mistakes.

I realize this isn't a criminal case but the process MLB is using is quite similar.  What makes you think the next player is going to get off with a lesser punishment?

That brings back good memories on the school bus.

It was against the rules to stand up while the bus was moving, so we moved around the bus on our stomachs underneath the rows of seats.  The floorboards were polished with some sort of wax that made it really easy to do, and the bus driver had no clue.

Some kids put their backpacks on the floor, so we would slither up and rummage through the contents of their backpacks unsuspectingly.  We would then take anything back to our seats that had their name written on it -- and then throw it at them.  Usually they would get mad and tell the bus driver and we would get summoned to the front of the bus.  I remember one such conversation.

Bus Driver:  Brian says you threw this calculator at his head.  What's wrong with you?
Me:  What are you talking about?
Bus Driver:  You know what I mean.
Me:  That's his calculator...look, his name is on it right here.
    Bus Driver:  Oh, uh, uh.
Me:  How would I throw his calculator at him sitting 10 rows behind him?
Bus Driver:  BRIAN!!!!!!!!!  GET BACK UP HERE!

As an old man in his 50s, when I see college-age kids in a crowd wearing backpacks, I assume two things: they're not locals, and they're up to no good. People who live in a community aren't usually the same ones who try to destroy it.As for the girls and their body messages, that's a brutal thing to see. But it's also not all that surprising since so much of the young girl culture of fashion is pushing them towards displaying their bodies more and more. My kid is now 14 and we went shopping for shorts this week. What a nightmare trying to find something long enough to keep her covered. Why is that? She has classmates that wear shorts with their cheeks about to burst forth, bad enough that at school our principal had to send a note home to parents to try and get their help in keeping their girls more covered up. What designer sits around and says "yeah, girls just hitting their teens need to dress like sluts. Here we go!" It worries me a good deal. I'm glad we don't live near the beach were it's probably worse.
