  1. I don't get that either. A man's performance on the field as a player has nothing to do with his ability to teach the game. Some of the best managers and coaches were marginal major leaguers, and some never made it to the majors. Great players tend to not be the best of teachers since they relied more heavily on their physical gifts, which you cannot teach.
  2. Ticket prices for a day playoff game are hardly an indicator of the dedication of the fan base.
  3. Girardi has managed the Yankees and Marlins. The Marlins fired him after the 2006 season, a year in which he won NL Manager of the Year. The animosity stemmed from an incident during a game in August of that year, when Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria was harassing home plate umpire Larry Vanover. Vanover told Girardi about the problem, and Girardi and his bench coach told Loria to stop. Although Loria was talked out of firing Girardi immediately after the game, he didn't last past the end of the season.
  4. Grossly overrated, IMO. They're OK, but I have had much better.
  5. Rizatriptan (Maxalt) and sumatriptan (Imitrex) are the ones we keep on hand. Our insurance won't pay for enough of either to get my wife through the month, so her doctor wrote her a prescription for both. She used to take sumatriptan injections, which worked the fastest, but insurance cut her back to two per month. She went to the pills which are now available generically.
  6. It makes sense on the Phillies' part to hold Millville night (which they have done before) when one of the town's own, a legitimate star, is in town. Just guarantees that more tickets will be sold.
  7. Las Vegas has neither Golden Corral nor Hometown Buffet, probably because of all the buffet competition from the hotels both on- and off-Strip. Boston Market had restaurants here for a while, but they abandoned the market due to poor sales. When I lived in the Oklahoma City area, we had both Hometown Buffet and Golden Corral. The food was acceptable, but not great. You aren't going to pay one price and load up on top-notch food anywhere, except the more expensive hotel buffets here. National chains, no chance.
  8. You have a way of conveying what you are feeling and making others feel the same thing. That is a gift. Many people can put words together. Not everyone can elicit an emotional response in the process. Another great job. Hoping for the best for you.
  9. I know three family members who are drawing no salary. I would say that is important. The US Postal Service isn't affected because they receive no tax revenue. As far as sporting events, it was decided as late as yesterday that Army, Navy and Air Force will be allowed to play their respective football games this weekend.
  10. It certainly seems to have been. Looking at his career stats, almost everything about it was an aberration. This season was much closer to his career norms.
  11. That thought has crossed my mind, with a year and $7.5M left on the contract.
  12. Yeah, we want even value in the deal. Can't give away too much.
  13. Going purely from personal experience, Yankees and Red Sox fans are obnoxious, but Dodger Stadium is the only place I have ever been physically threatened. Easy choice.
  14. Being stuck with the Pujols and Hamilton contracts is a bigger factor than anything else, IMO - although I am increasingly of the opinion that a fresh voice in the dugout is needed. The owner has shown a willingness to spend money on payroll. He needs to let his baseball people guide him in spending it much more wisely, although that particular horse is probably out of the barn for at least the next 4-5 years. A new pitching coach is a must. Pitchers don't improve when they come here, many regress, problems are not identified and addressed, and this staff is notoriously bad at holding baserunners - a teachable skill in my book, if we had someone capable of teaching it.
  15. I agree with this. Given Dipoto's relatively short tenure with the team, ownership/management would be less shy about going public with his dismissal relatively soon after the season ended, if that was what they were going to do. When we had that hot streak during September I believed that both Dipoto and Scioscia might somehow survive this off season, but given the way the team faded at the end, I'm not sure that Scioscia will be back in the dugout.
  16. I was listening to Hershiser on the way home from work. Entertaining guy on the air.
  17. Being here is about the only thing that helped me keep my sanity about this travesty of a season. The humor that some found in the worst of situations helped a lot. At least I have my Braves, so this October won't be as empty as the last one was.
  18. This just in: Mike Scioscia takes over as head football coach at USC, Lane Kiffin to manage the Angels in 2014.
  19. The front office scenario seems far more likely than an outright firing. That way it can be announced as a promotion as a reward for all Scioscia has done for the organization, and they will at least get something back for the money still owed on his managerial contract.
  20. That's what I'm afraid of. More long-term signings of 30-plus-year-old players who will come to California and suddenly forget how to play baseball.
  21. They're just hoping that the Rangers will go deep into the playoffs and vote everyone on the Angels roster a playoff share.
  22. We had better be the busiest club at the winter meetings. I want to see a spring roster with a lot of new names on it.
