I just...look we have positions of need, I get it. SS being a big one. I have no doubt Minasian will work on that. But for just ONE offseason can we please just focus on the literal biggest glaring need the team has had for 7 straight years?
Signing Realmuto is like buying a lamborghini when you're facing foreclosure on your home.
The majority of the budget this offseason should be used on pitching. We don't know yet whether that's going to be 40 million or 10 million. If it's the latter, we're in a tough spot and at that point the only real option is to use those funds to load up on bullpen arms.

Congrats to Kim Ng nothing but the best to you and Marlins going forward. If you have any extra starters please keep Angels in mind.

Yes. Taylor Ward in 2015 and Matt Thaiss in 2016 could have been Mike Soroka and Dakota Hudson. Even if they failed, would they have failed worse than they did with Ward and Thaiss? If you need pitching then maybe draft pitching in the first round, not catchers!!
That was ridiculous behavior for an MLB club!!

I'd say that, right now, the best are probably Chris Antonetti/Mike Chernoff with Cleveland, Andrew Friedman with Los Angeles, Derek Falvey/Thad Levine with Minnesota, Billy Beane/David Forst with Oakland, Brian Cashman with New York, and Matthew Silverman/Erik Neander with Tampa Bay.

I use baseball reference exclusively, but for no other reason than I used it when I first started really looking at WAR.
My belief is it doesn’t matter what you use as long as you don’t cross compare.  So you don’t judge one player using fangraphs and another using baseball ref.

Why is it unlikely?  It's possible he actually had an agreement a day or two ago, and it just officially got leaked today.  Signing guys to minor league deals probably can materialize rather quickly, I would imagine?

Hopefully he will be the GM instead of Arte.

I don't want Scioscia managing the team today and I don't want Dipoto as the GM today, so regardless of what actually happened THEN, I am fine with whatever happened because the team has moved on from both.

Still, I get his point.  Arte's GM hires haven't outlasted their initial contracts, that's never a good thing.

Tons of turnover in the GM department, regardless of reason, is not a positive.

It is a fact that owners who are more meddlesome are usually less successful.
Jerry Jones is one of the most involved owners in all of North American sports and the 'Pokes haven't won shit in forever. Not since the dynasty built by Jimmy Johnson and Minnesota Vikings' ineptitude that was so strong, any yahoo (yeah, I'm looking at you Barry Switzer) could win with it, petered out.
James Dolan of the Cablevision family empire is the principal owner of both the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers. He fancies himself a basketball aficionado and for him, hockey is an afterthought. He's constantly involved in the affairs of the Knicks but he lets the professionals run the the Rags. It's no mistake that the NHL club is a model franchise with loads of success in the decade and a half Dolan's been in charge and the Knicks are an embarrassment over the same period.
Other meddlesome owners are the bosses at some of my other favorite teams. Robert Sarver fancies himself a genius who must have input on all the basketball decisions his Phoenix Suns make and that franchise has been rudderless since he's owned them. American businessman Malcolm Glazer doesn't know shit about proper football (soccer) but he insists he rules the roost at Manchester United and that his buddy, Ed Woodward, another American that doesn't know jack all, run the operations of the club. Finally. no-one's more interfering and overbearing than Daniel Snyder who may in fact be the worst person in professional sports ownership today.
In short, my point is that Arte is indeed "free to have input whenever he wants in any decision he wants." He's also free to realize he doesn't know thing one about running a professional baseball club and should be smart enough to refrain from being intrusive. After all, I doubt he'd want Jerry Dipoto, Billy Eppler, Tony Regins, etc. telling him how to make and sell concrete. ☝️

Look, I'm willing to be as optimistic about the new guy as anyone. But I think we can all agree that Arte's meddling is a negative thing, not a positive one. And does anyone really believe he's going to change? Especially with yet another "wet behind the ears" GM?

My comment was based on Billy Eppler's tenure, not Reagins, Dipoto, Herzog, Port, Dalton, Walsh or Haney.

    Seriously?
Eppler left us with five straight losing seasons. He failed. It doesn't matter what he inherited. The team never got better with him.
Never better in his half decade of effort.
I wish him well and hope he connects with Jeter in Miami but his time in Anaheim was a failure.

Well, based on this article alone and what was posted on Hollander...
    IMO Arte will chose Hollander.

2014 is the last season we have had 5 starting pitchers each start at least 24 games. And Skaggs had 18 starts before his UCL injury. So I think winning 98 games in 2014 was more about adding pitching depth and not about the "all in" moves.
Yes, we went "all in" that year with Josh Hamilton and that was a disaster. And yes, we had gone "all in" with Pujols and CJ Wilson in 2011 and those big spends did not pay off over time. I am pretty sure we were still paying Vernon Wells not to play baseball - foreshadowing our future with Hamilton.
I think trading for Santiago and Skaggs, signing Joe Smith, Matt Shoemaker's first year as an MLB starter and adding Huston Street's expiring contract at the trade deadline were the keys to the 2014 success.
So if the Angels follow the 2014 blueprint (without an "all in" dumb signing like Hamilton) by trading for or signing SP and RP depth and add a 2B, I think they can be a playoff team.
2014's Skaggs, Santiago, Shoemaker, Street, David Freese and Joe Smith
2021's Richards, Shoemaker, Barria, Treinen, Kolten Wong and Jake McGee
