Oct. 27, 2002: The Anaheim Angels are THE Champions of Baseball | Top-50 Greatest Moments in Angels Baseball
By now, most Angels fans can recite Rory Markas’ call verbatim:
“Here’s the pitch to Lofton. Fly ball, center field. Erstad says he’s got it. Erstaaaaaad MAKES THE CATCH! The Anaheim Angels are the champions of baseball!”
When the Angels’ unofficial team captain settled under and clasped his glove around that most precious of final outs, it was the culmination of many things: an incredible World Series comeback; a riveting postseason run; an unprecedented 99 win regular season; the antidote for heartbreaking collapses in 1995, 1986 and 1982; a delivery on the promise of 1979; and the realization of a dream first dared to be dreamt in 1961.
The textbook version is simply that the Angels reached the pinnacle of their sport 42 seasons after their pursuit began. But to the fans, players, coaches and front office people who followed the Angels for any significant amount of time, of course the emotions run immensely deeper.
For me, it actually required a season or two of separation before I could truly appreciate the significance. Don’t get me wrong; I was as elated as anybody when the confetti and streamers came raining down upon us following Erstad’s catch.
But maybe I’d already spent all the emotion I could spare the day before, when I witnessed the birth of my first child and the rebirth of the Angels World Series hopes all within a span of about six hours. Or perhaps it was because even before the first pitch, the Game 7 victory truly seemed like a foregone conclusion following the previous night’s drama; and when was ANYTHING positive for the Angels a given during their first 41 seasons?
And that’s what struck me after the World Series championship had really sunk in – it happened, and it could happen again. Previously, I honestly wasn’t sure it ever would. Now, I believe it will again.
And while I think the moment when I first knew they were actually going to play in the World Series will always rank as the most emotional high in my years of being an Angels fan, in retrospect I’m so glad they went ahead and won it all while they were there. I mean all the greatest stories have a happy ending, don’t they?
Champions of baseball … yeah, that’ll do.

Yes, because the rules had changed and caps had been put in place. Yet another reason why blowing your wad on a stiff like Baldoquin was so awful.
Btw, autocorrect tried to change Baldoquin to Bad Onion.... Almost left it.

Correct: I'm 100% not saying it's a good thing, but it does appear to be the reality until we hear otherwise.

https://www.mlb.com/news/angels-davis-daniel-spins-dominant-second-outing-in-fall-league?t=arizona-fall-league-coverage
Daniel’s impressive outing Saturday was all the more noteworthy because it came against a Javelinas lineup that has hit .302 as a team and is the only Fall League club with more than 100 runs scored (108). Then again, having a starter that has already faced the Cleveland Guardians, Minnesota Twins and Oakland Athletics is a pretty good way of cooling even the AFL’s hottest bats.

Which, sadly, cost the Angels a chance to sign Guerrero Jr.

Considering Salmon and Finley were sent into the dugout, I think it’s fair to think they have some influence with Arte.

I would consider Doug Davis from the Rangers AAA system. Michael Johns from Tampa Bay. Matt Tuiasosopo from the Braves. Maybe even Buck Britton from the Orioles. These are all pretty much no name guys with some MLB experience. They are probably best suited for working with younger players and their organizations are using a balanced approach to offense and analytics for pitching and defense.
To pick one of these guys Minasian has to know the owner can wait for the team to meld rather than pick up a free agent and expect instant success. If Moreno is hell bent on high priced free agents then any one of the recycled managers of the last decade will suffice, the team is going to be in veteran autopilot mode.

Well the thread title is “Perry Minasian is us”. Sounds like something we would say.

What the hell do you expect him to say? “This roster sucks”?

I wonder if the guys who are in love with Minasian are the same guys who were in love with Dipoto, Eppler, etc. I'm baffled how posters here fall in love with the Angels GM and make excuses even as the team perennially underperforms.

Not likely at his age (73) as a manager, but the type of important presence to have as a coach. Dave McKay. He's been around forever, including a long time with LaRussa.
And with a younger manager, a valuable resource of knowledge and experience. And he's done well in Arizona and before that. Age obviously wasn't a factor and he seems to work well with a younger manager.
If not him, guys like that who are in sync with the manager and involved with in game strategies and decision making.
Assistants are often overlooked. They are liaisons between the manager and players, teachers, and involved in the games. As well as having input with the managers about technical and strategic factors.
Any manager needs trusted and savvy assistants who can provide input as well as do useful work with the players.
McKay for instance has a tremendous wealth of experience.

So even a young manager can be helped with veteran assistants.

Funny, but Minasian is tied with Andrew Friedman at 22nd place. Easy to look in hindsight, but I remember the board was pretty satisfied with the offseason moves.
I have to tell you that when I first read your post I thought Minasian was a serial sexual harasser or liked to kick dogs.

Supposedly he's quite intelligent and some feel he'd already be managing if he was willing to move his family. He was a finalist for the Dodgers' job along with Bud Black, Gabe Kapler, and Dave Roberts.
He withdrew, but some felt he had made a huge impression on Friedman.

Oh..OK, so...I would appreciate it if you would please share what that metric says about the job Perry has done over the last 3 years. Thanks in advance!

I take no pleasure is presenting this information that paints a very dismal picture of the person Arte hired as GM. Who, sadly, as this information bears out, has been a glaring misstep & one that any competent owner would not allow to be part of the way forward...

And in the same article, by the same metric, Minasian's regime is tied 22nd along with Friedman and Gomes of the much lauded Dodgers. Interesting, don't you think?

It’d be hard to top the Angels “search” for Joe Maddon.
They interviewed him, Farrell, Buck, and…
To fulfill the requirement of interviewing a minority, they interiewed Johnny Washington, the Padres hitting coach who has never once been uttered as a managerial candidate before or after that interview.

The Angels had so much luck with coke addicts from Texas, Washington should be first on the list.

khouse got a reaction from Angel Oracle in Buck Showalter interested in Angels managerial job
He's likely thinking that sunny California is preferable to the opportunities elsewhere. Plus there's not many other jobs where there's only 2 guys he would have to impress & where, walking in, he enters as the most knowledgeable one in the room.
