Not if he ultimately projects to move off of catcher....or even is a negative defensive asset.  Most scouts think he will have a hard time staying at C unless he makes major strides/improvments.  We're simply better off going SP at #9.

I’m old enough to remember when Jo Adell was considered the #2 prospect in baseball. Projecting prospect and farm rankings isn’t an exact science.
Seattle might be good going forward, but until they are, hold off on building a statue of Dipoto.
Tampa having the #1 farm when they were in the World Series last year is awesome. Seattle having #2 when they have the longest playoff drought in North American sports is less impressive.

Angels easily could be 75 wins or 85+ wins.  Their margin of error is soooo much smaller than most other teams due to lack of depth.  If they are healthy, 85 is possible and maybe more with the right mid-season trade.  But a few injuries like usually happens and imploding to 75 wins max is very possible.  I actually like the 350 ALW bet on Angels....good value even though the likelihood of all going their way is small.

Going only off KL's ranking, we were 30, 30, 12 heading into 2020.  We had high drafts pick due to sucking and made no trades giving away any good prospects and without graduating anyone good.  I think it's pretty obvious why i would think we'd be heading for the top 10.  I'm not sure how you can not see that...but whatever.  To fall back (on his list) to 16 and 23 is still a bit problematic and a concern.
But as IP mentioned, there is some understandable reasoning behind some of it.  Most of our top guys are either super raw or injured.  So no 2020 minor league system really hurt us ranking wise.  Plus, most rankings seem to go more off how many top 100 guys you have.  We easily could have 5-6 guys move into top 100 with proper health and a full minor league season.  In which case, we'd likely make a huge jump in these somewhat irrelevant (yet fun to talk about) rankings.

If he hasn't by now, I don't think he ever will.  Love Trout but my one issue with the guy has always been that he just doesn't seem to get as bothered by losing as I wish he did.  Him putting pressure on the front office would go a long way.  I see Rendon requesting a trade well before Trout ever gets to that point.

I still think it’s partly the owners digging in for 2022.
It is also Perry’s mentor’s approach (as many one year deals as needed).

Best news all winter.  I have zero tolerance/respect for any male who strikes a woman.  The Callaspo situation was annoying enough and the accounts of that one were kinda funny...

Seems like one of those dudes who will be unhittable for three weeks, and then he blows two saves in a row and everyone here turns on him.

It is absolutely unfathomable to me that we are about 9 million away from hitting the luxury tax and still need a top of the rotation starter and probably 2 good relievers to be even competing for the pennant.

Angels in 2030 reacted to Angelsjunky in Perry's Plan Revisioned (or Solved?)
Pancake Bear is right, though. You're taking one phrase out of context and misunderstanding, or at least skewing, what I'm saying.
Perry raised the floor and the hope is that the Angels are good enough to contend this year, but he obviously wasn't going "all in" - and presumably his approach (or as I understand it) was sanctioned by Arte.
We also have to remind ourselves, as fans, that Arte's priorities are different than ours, as fans. We want the team to win; Arte does too, but more so he wants the franchise (as a business) to be profitable. He's not a fantasy team owner; he's the owner of a $2B sports franchise - which is ten times the price he paid 17 years ago ($184M). From his perspective, the Angels are a success in the most important way (to him), and the best way to continue being a financial success is recapturing the sustained excellence that the team experienced from 2002-09, and the best way to do that is building from within, which ends up being far more cost-effective (talent for dollar ratio) than "Steinbrennering it."
So my guess is that Perry's pitch was something like this: "Billy did a good job laying the ground-work, but I'm the man to take the team to the next level. But in order to do so, I need a year to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the franchise, from top to bottom. I can plug holes on the major league team, build depth, and the team has enough talent to be competitive this year. But my plan will see sustained increases over the next few years, as the young talent matures."
I wouldn't even be surprised if Arte told him, "No big, long-term contracts." Arte, via Jerry Dipoto, already tried the Steinbrenner approach. It didn't work and crippled the franchise for a decade, with albatross contracts given to Vernon Wells, Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton, and Justin Upton. Arte has to look at all four of those and think, "Not gonna do that anymore." So Minasian isn't, and we can hope that the focus will be on farm building, which takes time and patience.
So they are not "punting" the season, they're just not robbing the future to spend in the present. The Angels already have a pretty good core. Minasian plugged some holes, and raised the floor and gave them a better chance at contending, in a way that doesn't close any doors for the future or saddle the team with more albatross contracts.
We still might see a trade before the year starts, but we can hope it won't be one that guts the farm, and I doubt it will - unless it is an offer Perry can't refuse. I think, more likely, we're done--or close to done--and any trades between now and July will only involve secondary minor league talent, if at all. They'll re-assess in July and, if a strong contender, trade from excess talent.

Barria could be every bit as good if not better than Odorizzi.
If we're going to sign a FA starting pitcher I'd rather go Paxton or Walker.
But honestly I'd love for the team to sign Rosenthal to a 2 or 3-year deal. We need a closer beyond Iglesias this season.
Can you imagine Mayers, Rosenthal and Iglesias working the 7-9 innings. Buttrey, Rivera, and Reyes also throw gas and can handle the 6th inning. Pena the longman, Claudio a situational lefty.

As I said... People are overrating him IMO.  My point was just that it would have been nice to have a veteran arm signed beyond this season. That said, there is nothing stopping them from extending guys in season.
I want no part of Melancon.

100% -- bad roster management spending HUGE long-term dollars to a FA SS next year.  It's not what we need.  If anything, spend that money on SP/RP.

I haven't read the thread, so I bet this has already been said, but just in case: This is really a 2/$85M contract. Think about that: AAV of $42.5M for the next two years. No pitcher is worth that much money, especially not a super douchy one with 1.4 great years to his name.

wow, you both totally missed my point.  It wasn't complaining about Arte.  He spends way more as the owner of a team in OC than i would even hope.  I am more than fine/happy with his payroll.  No complaints at all.  His spending is the least of our problems.  Anyone thinking he should spend even more is whining fan imo.  The dude has WAY spent....and pt us a category we've never been consistently league wise before him.
I just meant that the yanks spent way more than everyone else did back a few years ago and everyone complained about fairness.  About time the LAD do the same as the big dog on west coast.  They have recently and doing more so.  Good for them.  IF that's your team, you love it.  That's allowed in MLB.  It's not cheating like the Astros.  I have no problem with their payroll.
