He plays first base and not particularly well so far.  After the positional adjustment for 1B, it takes him into slightly negative WAR territory.

I love his OBP and contact skills, but the underlying metrics are still a little scary and aren't getting better as he gets more ABs.  His avg exit velocity is very low, as is his max exit velocity.  He's still got a high (though not insanely so) BABIP, his hard hit % is way below league average, he's hitting a ton of ground balls, etc.

He's got a very solid foundation of skills to build from and obviously his story isn't fully written after 86 plate appearances--but it does look like there are some things he'll need to work on to become a more well-rounded offensive threat.

I thought when he was drafted, all the talk was that he was an OBP & power guy.  But it seems it's all OBP and no power whatsoever.  Maybe the power comments were misguided (or it was my lack of reading comprehension).  at his age, it's not like it's a body development thing that will come as he grows into his body and such.  It's just weird that it's completely nonexistent.  Hopefully it's a small sample size issue.  It sure seems he would have been better off being in the minors longer in order to fully develop and grow his game -- rather than thrown right into the fire.  It's a great opportunity sure, but kind of unfair to the guy imo.

At least Neto got some run in the minors and proved over a longer period valid results that showed he was ready.  Plus, at SS, he's not expected to bring more than good defensive and some spark.

Actually Schanuel has a 0.02 oWAR in just 16 professional games, Fourts, Skips, whatever you want to go by today.

Thanks for adding in a different stat.
I said WAR - which was -.01 and now is worse.  But by any metric except walks/obp, he’s going to have to do better to stay LT.  Much better power wise to be an elite or top level 1B.  He’s young and has time.  Probably would have been better served staying in minors to develop a bit more.  But the Angels are in a weird place with everything.

I expect to read a lot of negative stuff on this board, that's the nature of it.

But one thing I really didn't think I'd be reading this year is "the drafts by Perry/McIlvaine are bad".  This is bonkers to me.

I, for one, am glad we have "Low Ceiling" Neto and don't have to read the "should we sign Elvis Andrus to fill the hole at SS" threads this winter.

Who said the drafts were "bad"?  Show me and i'll give you props for that.

Stad was fawning over the drafts.  My comments, and others, were pumping the brakes on the amazing accolades Strad was pushing simply due to these 5 guys being on the team.

Personally, i also commented that with three straight top 1/3rd picks by Perry, I wish we didn't go ALL of them with high floor, early to MLs guys that have low chances at reaching a high ceiling.  That's all.  But i said i understood going that route due to the win-now circumstances with Ohtani and complete lack of depth within the organization.  I'm hoping we don't go 4-for-4 next draft doing the same.  that's it.  No hyperbole required.

So, DFA Schanuel now?  Or just non-tender him in the offseason?  I mean, he's negative WAR, so...

Also, here's a table showing Schanuel is literally the worst player selected in the entire draft this year, as his WAR is below every other player drafted in all rounds!

Right to the Straw Man argument.  Well done.

So Neto, Schanuel aren’t performing?  Detmers wasn’t better than league average last year?  Bachman and Joyce haven’t shown they belong in the majors?  Sorry facts hurt you.

Others answered you already.  But i'll repeat them.  Touting Schanuel as a 1Bman with a 300 slugging percentage and negative WAR -- nice gymnastics.  Joyce has a near 3 WHIP and surgery -- even if he makes it back and does well, he's a RP (start the parade smh).  Bachman -- another failed SP who needs to fight the injuries in hopes of becoming a RP (amazing pick).  Detmers is an unknown -- big highs and big lows.  There's potential for a valuable starter there but when will it happen and with the consistency that is needed.

If by "performing" you simply mean they are on the field for this team -- ok, you got me.  But there is a big difference from being out on the field "performing" versus actually "producing".

I think you're just trying too hard.  Sure, depth and replacement level guys are needed -- especially when you have some elite high-priced players.  Unfortunately, some of those high-priced Angels are not "performing" (see what i did there) and/or can't stay healthy.  What this team and organization needs is some elite, exciting young difference makers.  Actually, they need pretty much everything.  But when you are drafting early in the 1st round, you should be aiming for and drafting/developing potential elite guys.  Not RPs, backend SP and 0 WAR 1B with no slugging.

  6. 2 hours ago, Stradling said:

Yes because they’ve been so bad at drafting under Perry where they’ve only had 5 guys make the majors in the last three drafts, most of any team. With only one having no real success.

You're serious with that comment?  I sure hope not.

The reason they have a lot of guys making the majors is because the team suck and they are promoting fast in a desperate move for success.  Not to mention, as i stated, they are drafting advanced college players early on in hopes to get them onto the team as soon as possible.  Most are high floor, low ceiling types.  Which is fine.  But where are the potential stars and elite players?  It's basically our farm system sucks and we have no organizational depth.  So we need to draft some immediate depth now to salvage hopes of trying to contend for playoffs during Trout (& more so) Ohtani's time.

which is fine and fully understandable.  But let's not pretend that the Angels are onto something great here and new methodology for MLB franchises building a team.  This is no TB Rays organization.  It's a desperate team taking desperate measures.  I'm not sure why some try so hard to sugar coat it.  We're adults (mostly of us) -- we can admit the failings of the organization and what its been & currently now is.  Fanbases around baseball are not exactly envious of the Angels and their organization (that's being kind).

We all hope for the best and hope we can get very lucky to turn it around quickly.  But that's really all we have...hoping for luck...and LOTS of it.  Because reality and the facts are against this organization compared to the rest of the league.

Dude, you have no idea what Perry would do with a #1 overall pick.  First overall is different than 11 or 12 or 13 overall.  If there's a Alex Rodriguez/Ken Griffey Jr type HS player (i.e. an ultra-elite talent who will move quickly), then there's no reason to think Perry would pass on that kind of player.

Luckily for your feeble prediction, 1) we won't get the #1 overall pick, and 2) right now the most likely guys who would go first overall in 2024 are college players.

Relax Turbo -- have you heard of sarcasm?  Well, maybe only partially sarcastic since i wouldn't put it past the Angels & crew to do so.

    Clown organization

    Totally.

I've been having posters whine and cry to me that i'm always posting negative comments and such.  But look at the facts and the organization's actions.  When something positive happens, i'll post about it and certainly will enjoy that moment.  However, it's all crap and clown show.  Anyone who thinks otherwise and is enjoying this organization and supporting their actions is clueless and living in a dream world.

  9. Such bad timing for Ohtani.  It's too bad...for him.  His FA this offseason now becomes even more interesting.

This is yet another reason he should have been traded during the last 12 months.  SP themselves are super prone now to arm injuries.  Adding onto it a guy who is a legit everyday MOTO slugger....doing both is simply not sustainable on the human body.  Dude is a unicorn for doing it as much as he has during his career.

I'm not so sure the medical staff is 100% to blame.  Ohtani is very competitive and wants to win badly.  I'm sure he was pushing to play/pitch as much as possible.

So much to say, with this joke of a franchise now 17-29 in past 46 days.   This is kind of a repeat of 2022.   Once was bad enough!

    Farm system inconsistent since 2010!

    Bad acquisitions!

    Horrible big money FA signings!

    Too many bad GM hires!

Team QUITS under adversity!  Bunch of QUITTERS!

Constantly in upper half in MLB in most days lost for regulars to injury!   Need new medical and conditioning staffs!

Moreno only cares about power hitting, as other teams are increasing their team speed a lot more!

Fundamentals on the field are lacking!  Moreno doesn’t care about those either!

    Pitchers fall apart under adversity!

Maybe the first team in MLB history to go 7-17 to start August, after going all in to win!

Even Minasian, for some of the good things done, also struck out on a lot of the mid-season acquisitions!

Drafting Schanuel 11th when rated in the upper 20s, AND paying him full 11th pick slot money!  And compound the problem by promoting him after just a month in the minors!

Drafting essentially an injury prone late innings reliever in Bachman at #9 in 2021!

Ever since Scioscia retired, consistently mediocre managers and coaching staffs!

Ever since Scioscia retired, disconnect seems to usually exist between FO and the bench!

This is a franchise in total disarray, and is one of the laughing stocks of MLB!

One common denominator: the unholy trio of Moreno/Carpino/Kuhl!

Moreno can’t even bother to sell the team, when it was an obvious necessity!   He is a megalomaniac!

No wonder they find it hard to bring in a real GM!

    Reagins garbage!

    Dipoto garbage!

Eppler garbage, enjoy it Mets fans!

    Minasian, jury still out!

Don’t let radio broadcast team travel!

Moreno so cheap with minor league players allowances that MLB was forced to change the rules!

    I’m sick and I’m tired!

    I’m sick and I’m tired!

    I’m sick and I’m tired!

Of losing seasons EVERY SINGLE SEASON since 2017 with no end in sight!

    An embarrassment to MLB!

Nailed it.  King AO. But watch out - some don’t want to hear it.  The truth hurts.

This is a thread focused on the Angels farm system and standout performances throughout the season.

It is not a thread to bring your gloom and doom narrative.

If you want to wait until 2030 to check back in, we'll be here.

Oh sorry Chuck - I guess I missed the title for this thread that said it was an only optimistic, positive, everything is awesome thread.  I thought it was discussing our farm system and prospects - meaningfully.  Good or bad.
If it’s all sunshine thread then just say so.  Call the thread that and I’ll take reality out.  I’ll join in with the unrealistic convo, if you want, and pretend we have a great future and tons of prospects to take us to the glory land.  Otherwise, how about we allow different opinions and not impose censorship.  I understand business is Angels.  But sometimes you need to call a spade a spade.

Also, I didn’t come in saying these things.  The conversation just went that way.  But I get it - you don’t want to hear it.  I’ll go away.

People are so quick to pull the, the team gave up mantra, when they lose but don't understand that is the same team that guts out a hard fought win.

Nobody on the team wants to miss the playoffs. Nobody on the team wants to bat .180 when traded and sour their free agency suitors. Nobody on the team wants to go back to the minors or get cut.

Nobody on the team has given up, they are just collectively not competitive.

agreed -- they simply are not good enough comparatively to the rest of the league.  It's been that way for several years -- and will continue to be that way for a few more years at least.

Outstanding contribution to the thread as always

would you rather me add onto the BS floated by delusional fans who think we're a RP away or some better injury luck away from contending.  I'm not going to "soccer mom" it for you kid.  The organization is in a very bad place.  Even a complete tear down rebuild is unlikely because they don't have the pieces to do so.  Ohtani was one piece to use -- but they went for it instead.  I applaud the effort, but it's misplaced and filled with bad judgement.

As IP says, there is a path to getting out of the funk and become a winning team with the chance at getting into the playoffs.  Unfortunately, the organization/owner has proven year after year that they do not want to take that path -- they continually want to try a quick fix...trying to hit a 7-run home run with the bases empty.  You have almost 10 years of empirical evidence to go off of -- wake up.  Personally, I'll believe the change when i actually see it happen and it's fully implemented throughout this organization from the very bottom to the top.  You just are clinging to some wide-eye kid hope & dream.

But if you want to hope & dream -- keep doing so.  Don't let others like me get you down.  Enjoy the Angels baseball, continue to think their poo doesn't stink and believe in Santa Claus.  It's just odd for someone to whine & reply to posters who don't feel the same way as you.  But really there is no way out of this without HUGE and drastic changes.  That's why offering some ideas is hopeless -- there is just way too many needed.  Some of which (new owner) isn't an option that's available.  So things are the way they are for the angels....and won't change for several years.  You should be used to that by now.  But if not, you likely got the rest of the decade to get you there.
