  1. With steroids (mostly) gone, guys don't get better and healthier during their 30-40 years.  So angels got the best and least costly years of Ohtani.  Cool. Now dodgers get years 30-40 at WAY past market value.  Good luck with that.

imagine trying to live up to a 700m contract now.  Yikes. Good thing he can hid behind the language issue when reporters come at him if things don’t go so well.

  2. I have no problems with this.  It’ll be cool having him still in socal and watching the ohtani crazy circus.  Fun stuff.

maybe this gets Arte to change finally (lol yeah right)

if he blows/sucks, then lol for some other team being stupid for once.

But really at that price, even 550, it’s absurd.  I’m just glad the Angels didn’t make the mistake.  We got him for his great years.  Let someone else have the leftover crumbs ala AP.

why TOR? seems so suss you'd think he'd want to be the greatest athlete in american sports and the fit with the LAD seemed perfect for exposure and winning.

Why the Angels in Anaheim originally?  The dude likes the anonymity and lack of media attention -- and the ability to have personal control of things from the team, etc.

And despite the Angels losing a couple slots again, it doesn't seem like it'll be a big deal. The guys available at the 6th pick and 8th are pretty comparable.

Typically the top 3 guys really separate themselves. And everything after that 4-15ish is close in value, and 15-30 as well.

This last draft was the strongest in YEARS. So picks 1-5 were all elite and the guys taken at the end of the first round were typically guys you get in picks 10-15 in a normal class. The biggest difference really was the 2nd round. Many of those guys were legit 1st rounders any other year. And wouldn't you know, the Angels just happen to not have a 2nd round pick the year where it actually means something. Mariners made out like bandits though.

That sounds reasonable enough.  However, i'd still prefer to be picking at #6 than #8.

My feelings is that if any team has to wait for Ohtani to sign before they can fill their glaring needs they probably should not be trying to sign him in the first place becasue you are looking at the next 10-12 years of looking for ways to cobble a team together around a huge chunk of your payroll. So its either go big and blow your wallet and shop at TRADER JOES  now and the next 10 years tax be damed or go back to your office and shop with the middle class at WALMART.

I've always found Trader Joe's to be pretty inexpensive and great deals on their stuff.  I shop there like twice a week.  Now Whole Foods -- that's an over priced store.

Why not Snell?  180 innings and gave up 47 runs.

Buyer beware on Snell.  I think the team that signs him will regret it a lot earlier than usual.

But more so, I think the Angels are not true contenders this year.  It’s the long game and I think the 25 year old is a much better fit for what this team is currently and going forward.

Call me crazy, but, if the Angels were gonna shell out a ton of money for a hitter not named Ohtani, would it not make sense to wait until next winter and try for Soto? Even if we don’t land him I think I would rather have a shot at him next winter over spending way too much for Bellinger this winter.

I just can’t believe there’s any reason to think Bellinger for just about any amount is worth the risk.

In a vacuum, you're right.  But the better option is neither.  This team can't spend its way out of the quicksand that it's in with yet another huge LT FA deal.  Smart, short-term deals -- sure.  Meanwhile building their farm system via the draft, international market...and more importantly, spending on scouting & developmental staff up & down the organization.

But, unfortunately, I think we know which path the organization (Arte) will take here.

i think in this case it depends on the severity of the injury. the angels staff couldn't help him get healthy. maybe the folks in arizona can figure out something about his health that the halos couldn't.

as far as looking for this kind of player from other teams, someone with quite an injury history,  i'm not sure that's a good strategy.

I respectfully disagree.  We need all the talent we can get...and finding it in our farm system and via FA is not happening anytime soon.

The real problem is that the Angel's organization does not have the development staff and medical/etc. staff to turn these types of guys around.  Same with guys that just need a tweak, change. etc. from a good development staff.  It's the other way around -- guys leave and turn things around elsewhere.  It's the same theme/problem for the angels organization as a whole -- heavy at top with no foundation to support it.
