Game 6 reacted to Jeff Fletcher in Tommy La Stella
There are a lot of guys who start in the majors but aren’t ideal starters.
If you have one or two below average starters, you’re still pretty good. If you have four or five, you’re in trouble.
I think the Angels were hoping that some combination of La Stella-Fletcher-Ward-Rengifo could make an average MLB starter at 2B/3B. At the moment that seems optimistic, but there’s a long way to go.

Is the plan to give Rengifo all of April in AAA, and if he dominates at SLC, then call him up to take over 2B?

These are professional baseball players -- those sorts of messages exist more in the heads of fans than they do in the clubhouse. If anything, given the fact that the organization claims to be trying to be moving more towards an analytics based process, then they are undermining their self proclaimed intent by ignoring data to try to give a player what amounts to an "atta-boy".

Ausmus didn't sign La Stella. And I don't hate Eppler, I'm eternally grateful for the Trout signing and I think Upton and Ohtani are huge achievements as well. But in the case of Cozart and La Stella, I think he made bad choices.
Yes I know how OBP is calculated.
But those numbers can't tell you if a guy is gonna come through with the game on the line or go from being a pinch hitter to a starter. The eyes are important. And I think you lose more by having Fletch on the bench than having La Stella on the bench. We also haven't seen what Fletcher can do. He's played a half a season. La Stella is a career bench player.

You're right, Jeff and Billy know best, stupid me for disagreeing smh
I stand by my statements. Jeff's logic hinges on an obsession over the OPS of a career pinch hitter vs. a solid rookie campaign. Trust your eyes man.

La Stella's playing time can be linked to Ward's failure to secure the job at 3B.

Fair enough. I wont argue with your premise. Personally I believe both Fletcher and Barria deserve starting spots.

Career WAR - La Stella - 1.1...Fletcher - 2.0.
Fielding Ave. - La Stella - .982... Fletcher - .994
Again, I'm not questioning La Stella's role on the Roster. But he's at best a PH, should Start not more than 25 games this Season, and play late inning Defense to give guys a blow. He's not a 300 AB guy. Fletcher should at least get an opportunity for 300+ AB's. If he proves inadequate, give Ward or Rengifo shot. Again La Stella is not the solution.

None of Fletcher/La Stella/Cozart should be starters on a contending team. It’s the sad reality that two of them have to play everyday for us.
Eppler did a poor job this offseason of filling holes

So I wanted to look at a larger defensive sample size re: LaStella. I didn't realize this. I just assumed when we got him, La Stella was a decent singles hitter, sound defensively, and could be used as a pinch runner. Well, I looked at his numbers. His overall career fielding % is .973. His best position is 2B, at .983. Hardly stellar. He has a career 4SB's with 3 CS. Not sure if he is a good runner going from first to third or second to home, but he is definitely not a base stealing threat. He does have a career OPS of .709.
I still believe he can be a great bench piece for us offensively. He could spell Fletcher or Cozart against tougher righty's as an occasional starter, or come in late in the game and play 1B for Albert or Bour. But to have him get 300 AB"s (which he has done once in his career in 2014 as a Braves rookie)? I don't think so. Last year with the Cubs, he had 192 PA's in 123 games. He started 22 games, of which two were as a DH. I think that's kind of the threshold for his playing time. I don't think splitting time with Fletcher is a short or long term solution. While we hope Fletcher will help with the bat, we know he won't give up extra outs/runs defensively.
I think you need to let Fletcher play. If Fletcher screws up, then give his playing time to Ward or Rengifo.

Fletcher hit .291 and LaStella hit .167 during spring.
Fletcher is way better defensively
Fletcher won the 2B job last season.
Absolute disgrace that LaStella gets the opening day job over Fletcher who is a spitting image of a true baseball player. Fletcher should start today vs a lefty and should be the every day from now on.

Eppler really screwed up with this signing. There were so many options available way better than LaStella. Trade him or release him and bring up Rojas or Rengifo.

Sample size here re: David Fletcher, @Jeff Fletcher.
Stella has appeared in 398 games, Fletcher just 81.
I know that our future 2B is probably one of Jones or Rengifo and that Fletcher is more of a utility guy, but right now I believe he's the better option as Stella provides just a walk here and there and nothing really else.

I think some of you have unrealistic expectations for every single position. No one fields 9 all stars every game.

Couldn't agree more. While it seemed like Gubicza was over the top in phrase of the 2 seamer and curve, it was really, truly promising. The 2 seamer especially had crazy movement. Sometimes players in a sport follow the new hot thing and leave an opening for someone to do the thing that most are abandoning. That could very well be the case with Harvey and that pitch. The trend has been to abandon it, resulting in batters less familiar with the cut of it (and dear lord did his have a ton of late movement tonight).
I remember always loving the pitch thanks to Scot Shields. His, especially to lefties, was brutal. Would seem like it was definitely going to hit the batter, then would end up a called strike on the inside edge of the plate.

Fletcher with a knock - needs to start either at 3B or 2B. La Stella is a LH pinch hitter off the bench, nothing more.

Mike Trout: *signs extension
Mike Trout: Alright boys let's win some games!
Brad Ausmus: So Tommy La Stella will be getting the majority of at bats at 2B this year.
