If Kendrick is interested in returning to the Angels and the Angels don't want to forfeit a first round pick, they should arrange a sign-and-trade with the Dodgers.

A sign-and-trade with the player's consent / participation is permissible under the CBA.

Any speculation that Escobar could play SECOND is strictly forbidden. He was acquired to play THIRD! THIRD! THIRD!

All of us have been informed of this. Further, we have been warned regarding this inappropriate speculation multiple times now.

    SHAME!

His entire MLB career is a small sample size. He's just completed his age 29 season with 277 plate appearances. Epitome of AAAA player.

He hits for absolutely no power, and he doesn't take walks. The Angels already have slap hitters with below average on base skills. He is still redundant behind Nava and Gentry.

    OBP .299, SLG% .307, OPS .605, OPS+ 72. Robertson's chance was fairly given.

Good guy. Solid fielder at all three OF positions. He is, however, completely redundant behind Nava and Gentry.

This is probably Fletch's worst article to date, full of holes in logic and willful ignorance. He pretends we have no pitching or catching depth and then tries to sell the reader on a lack of finances from a team that's filthy rich and clearly should be in "win-now" mode.

I'm fine with Kim, if he wants to come over. That's still up for debate. Korean teams are pursuing him as well.

And in regards to the original posters Murphy/Kendrick idea, wouldn't it be best to just resign Freese? After getting Escobar, who can handle either position, Freese's market hasn't exactly exploded. If he was reasonably 2/20, I'd consider him a good sign, seeing as how Kendrick and Murphy are similarly aged and cost 1.5 x as much, at least, for twice as long, plus a draft pick.

People on the board think their scanning of fangraphs and BBRef is the end all to stat research and WAR is the final answer. The front office sees far more than any of us are privy too so the thought that their plan is somehow shaped by a shorthand stat like WAR is silly.
Also, as far as the front office plan for left field, it may just be they haven't been able to find a value greater than just keeping their draft pick for the money being spent.

    Another Scenario:

March:  Choi impresses everyone with a great spring training and makes the 25 man roster.

April-May:  He replaces Pujols for the first two months of the season after Pujols' injury takes a little longer to heal.  He does terrific, and is among the early leading All Star vote getters.

June:  Pujols comes back and replaces Choi at first base.  In an effort to cheer him up, Arte gives him a three year $15M guaranteed contract.

July:  Choi is still depressed because he's reduced to sharing playing time with Cron, who is playing poorly.

August:  Choi gets really depressed due to lack of playing time, and visits a night club, discovers cocaine, and learns about polls (ie poles).

September:  Arte gets mad, trades Choi to the Texas Rangers for $500,000 in cash consideration, and eats the other $14.5M of his contract.

October:  Choi and the Rangers win the World Series.

This big spend on a SP by the Giants, hopefully, eliminates them as competitors to the Angels in the LF free agent market.

We could soon have St. Louis and San Francisco focused on outfielders other than the big three, I like that.  It whittles our competition down to the Mets, Detroit, Kansas City (who made be fading too), maybe Mariners (not likely though), and the ever present surprise team.  By waiting we are moving into a better position.

Pitching is the single most important component on building a baseball team. Jerry Dipoto built an amount of pitching depth in the system rivaled by very few. Richards is an ace, he'll be back at ace status this year. Heaney has grown into a stady #3 starter. Skaggs is right on the cusp of joining him in the mid-rotation. Tropeano's been cheated out of opportunities since being acquired but he looks like a #3/4. Those four are cheap and have the making of a well above average staff that's around for years.
Then on the peripherals, you have the past their prime vets in Weav and CJ, and inconsistent but capable guys like Santiago and Shoe. When you throw in minor leaguers like Smith, McGowin, Gatto and Long, suddenly you have a system with enough pitching to trade away and still last you a decade.
I only wish Jerry could have built a farm system and offensive depth to match.

I'm all in on Upton.  But if we choose to go the 2B route, I'd do a reunion with Howie before Murphy.  It isn't to say Murphy's a bad player at all.  He derives much of his value from the ability to play both 2B and 3B.  But we already have that value in Yuny Escobar.  And so just as a 2B, if we're comparing Kendrick to Murphy, I see them basically being the same player with one basic difference.  We KNOW Howie is a great fit in the clubhouse and can hit it either in front of, OR behind Trout.
