Romero makes sense if he falls to the Angels at #47 but it's likely he's picked before then. Steer clear on Heimlich. Guy is a registered sex offender.

I'd try to bring him back on a 2 year deal but be prepared to have a competent backup for the next few years. He's probably good to give you 90-110 games but given his production the past 2 years, he'd be a nice guy to have back moving forward.

I posted in another thread when Yelich was brought up and I just see no scenario where the Angels can make an offer without totally dumping the farm along with a nice MLB piece. Yelich is roughly a 4 win player whose in the middle of his prime for the next 5-6 years and is owed very little given his production. If I had to throw out a guess, you'd be looking to give up Jones, Thaiss, Rodriguez, Barria and a MLB player like Shoemaker. This looks like a huge amount to give up because it certainly is but other teams can afford it. A team like the Dodgers, for example, could put together a deal of Verdugo, Alvarez and a MLB piece and probably be within striking distance of a deal and it wouldn't totally sabotage their system.
Would I love Yelich on the Angels? Absolutely. Is it realistic to obtain him? Not really.

Through 37 plate appearances(small sample size alert), EY has a .323/.432/.516 line with a 167 wRC+. You never want to assume too much from a guy in less than 50 plate appearances, or even 100 for that matter, but he is walking more and striking out less than ever. That alone makes him interesting to monitor because an improved approach with his base running abilities might make him a more attractive 4th outfielder than Ben Revere when everybody is healthy.

Dave Cameron wrote a piece at Fangraphs about him yesterday which was pretty interesting. He's getting much better results but the only thing that has drastically changed in his profile is his walk%, which is definitely real and brings his floor up to a league average hitter at the least. But it looks like his home ball park has played a big part in a lot of his success this year.

This trade is and was always about the health of Alex Meyer. So far(knock on wood), Meyer has managed to stay healthy and post good results in the rotation this year, although he really needs to trim that walk rate to have consistent success. Even if he doesn't, I believe there is still value in him as a multi inning reliever whose under club control. I was definitely thrown off by this trade at the time, just due to the fact that they took Nolasco back in any deal, but the trade actually almost makes too much sense looking back on it.
If the Angels didn't have Nolasco, they would've spent similar money via free agency on a #5 starter last offseason. The real question came down to whether Meyer was worth it or not and that still remains to be seen. Santiago was never bringing back some big time piece but I did think at the time he'd bring back a tad more.
This was mentioned last month in Jeff Fletcher's piece but the Angels allegedly turned down a straight up swap between Hector Santiago and Ariel Miranda, who currently has a 3.74 ERA and 0.9 WAR in his age 28 season. The real question may up coming down to comparing Miranda and Meyer going forward. Miranda has the safer floor as a potential #5 starter but Meyer obviously has high octane stuff that can make him an inconsistent 3/4 starter or power arm in the pen. This will be a good topic to explore again in 2-3 years.

While I'm insistent on the club adding more starters outside of the organization, this seems a tad extreme. At the very least, one of those guys will be a big part of the Angels future, hopefully 2 of them.

True for the players who are already under contract. Drew a blank there. But it's obviously not factoring in the arb guys and any new players brought on board. So realistically, its more like 45ish million dollars to spend, which is a lot but not enough to fill every single hole through free agency.

You sign 2 guys for the rotation or trade for 1 and sign one! And then whoever is left battles for the other 3 spots if that's Richards, Trop and Heaney or Skaggs or whoever....So, what!
This is professional sports you just don't stand pat and hope that a timetable from recovery is set in stone. We have done this too much! You are going to cut bait with roid users and drug abusers but then not have a second plan of action for guys returning from injury and place all of your eggs in those baskets?.....Makes ZERO sense! This is how we are in the clean peanut stage... It works in a bullpen building atmosphere but not in a rotation spot where you are requiring an arm to give you consistent 6-7-8 innings per start! Ramirez has been excellent but isn't the NORM.
If they all come back healthy you have a surplus to trade for other resources!
It's pretty simple. Arte' sticks to his budget. Fans, and Championship runs be damned.

He actually made some sense this past offseason as a guy who could be acquired for very little and at least be a bench piece. I still think he is a bench piece, even after his 4 HR night. He provides a little bit of pop and can handle righties but he has a flawed approach at the plate and rates poorly defensively. Although, I'm curious to see what he does moving forward after this performance. It's really hard to fluke this kind of game.

At this point, the Angels should be treating Richards as a wild card in the rotation and act as if he's not a member of the rotation moving forward. This will force the Angels hand in making moves to beef up the rotation. In my opinion, they need to sign a starter next offseason who will stabilize the rotation next year. Someone like Marco Estrada will give you #3/4 starter production but he'll give you quality innings, which the Angels desperately need.
My biggest worry is the Angels roll into 2018 depending on 4 pitchers with injury concerns: Richards, Skaggs, Heaney, Tropeano. Realistically, only 1 of those guys will give you the production you expect, 1 will give you innings while underperforming a tad and the other 2 will be more or less wild cards. If the Angels sign Estrada, you'll have some rotation depth: Estrada-Shoemaker-Richards-Heaney-Skaggs-Tropeano-Ramirez-Meyer-Smith is 9 deep in rotation depth, with 4 of the pitchers being unknowns as far as what they'll give you innings wise and production wise. If the team plans on competing next year and the years after, they need to go outside the organization to find another starter.

This is always a tough situation to gauge. The boring answer is we simply don't know what they'll provide. Everybody comes back different from TJ surgery. If I had to throw a guess out there, I'd bet Heaney is a safer bet to remain healthy and toss 125 innings next year due to him having clean mechanics and not being reliant on overpowering stuff to stress out his arm. Tropeano has some really awkward mechanics and puts his arm slot in an unusual position, leading me to believe he's more likely to deal with injuries in his career. I think there's a reason why the Angels got Tropeano for so little from Houston.

Maybin, Escobar, Norris, Parker and Petit are likely the only players they'll look to move and even then, you're not getting a ton back for those guys. There's also an argument to be made to keep Maybin and a few of the relievers, looking to extend them for 2018 and beyond rather than move them. Obviously, if a team comes calling and has real prospects to give in return for these players, you have to look into it. But I suspect that the return for half a season of these players will be far less than most realize, which means you'll be creating holes for 2018 and not getting the return you'd like.
My hope is a team like the Nationals expresses interest in multiple relievers, asking for Norris and Parker in a package deal that allows the Angels to get a better deal than they would by trading each of those players individually.

Dave Cameron from Fangraphs gave Kyle Schwarber a Mike Napoli comp for career value, which actually is a pretty good compliment. Both have similar walk-strikeout rates, in game power and below average defense at the first position they started off at in the majors. I believe the Cubs eventually move Schwarber to an AL team that can utilize him at 1B/DH and use him sparingly in left field. My guess would be he ends up in Tampa Bay as a piece in a trade that moves Chris Archer to Chicago.
This bad start doesn't change much for me, although I believe he was very overhyped coming into the majors. He smashes baseballs and takes walks, giving him a high floor as 115-120 wRC+ type of hitter but the rest of the skill set is very limited.

You want Gerrit Cole? Be prepared to give up Jahmai Jones, Matt Thaiss, Jaime Barria and Matt Shoemaker/Tyler Skaggs. There are teams out there, such as the Astros and Yankees, who have far more to offer than the Angels without depleting their whole system. Very slim chance the Angels are even rumored to be talking with the Pirates.
