I would rather have Harvey at 11 mil plus incentives than Happ at 14.  A rotation of Heaney, Harvey, Skaggs, Barria, and Canning isn't awful.

We were short a lefty power bat with the decline of Calhoun.  For 2.5 mil, this deal doesn't hurt at all.  
Also, if he doesn't hit, we can always bring Calhoun in to play 1B, and call up Adell to play one of the outfield corners.

I have thought for a while now that signing Harper makes too much sense.

We have enough utility infielders.  Can he pitch?

I have always thought we would be in on Harper.  One year at or over the cap, then Albert retires.  Redistribute that money to cover the Trout extension, buy out Calhoun after this season, and we'd be OK.  
We would have to hope Canning and the other young pitchers are the real deal, though.
I think the big splash is Kicuchi and Harper, always have.

We won't be signing so many left handers unless we have a trade in place for one or more of them.  Also, I can't see Heaney and Skaggs going anywhere, they both showed flashes last season, and have potential to be at least very good number two starters.

Counting on Calhoun for a bounce back year is a mistake.  He's gone from .271 to .244 to .208 the last three seasons.  And the on base percentage has gone from .344 to .328 to .283 in the same time frame.  If we use him as a platoon partner with Albert at 1B, maybe.

Check out the interview with the new catcher, Hudson. He is VERY high on Canning.  Command on 4 ML quality pitches,  according to him.

All reports on Canning are saying he has ace potential, so I don't think he'll be going anywhere just yet.  Suarez, I could see because of Skaggs and Heaney.  Still, the elite pitchers don't seem to be available, and the injury history on guys like Strasburg and Kershaw isn't good.  Eppler will have some difficult choices this winter.

The Phillies DFA'd Jake Thompson a few days ago, maybe we should take a flyer on him.  Face it, we need healthy starting pitching around here.

I think we should upgrade the Starting Pitching.  We will not contend running Deck McGuire out there, or banking on a return of Matt Shoemaker.

As opposed to most of the board, I think Bedrosian would bring back the best return.  To the Cubs for their backup 3B, David Bote and a minor league arm.
