Are the A's that good or do they know the Angels so well?

Superstars don't speak English, just ask Stephen A. Smith. At one time he said they only speak English, but he has now changed his mind. -
It takes someone willing to give up a premium prospect to get one.

Good luck to you Andrew, thanks for strong effort!

Wow, you guys give up easy, lol. Personally I really like many of the guys on this team a lot, they have character, but not always the greatest skill. I do fear that Minasian may be way in over his head though.

Quite frankly I would rather have Jose Rojas up here for third base than Mayfield. Mayfield shouldn't be anywhere near a major league team. I don't believe this is a Maddon problem, it's a Minasian problem. And I agree most of this is rooted in three of your highest paid players sitting on the injured list for long periods of time, it's catastrophic! It's a part of the game to properly prepare yourself as a player to remain on the field for most of the year, even if it means you dial it back to some degree. Garret Anderson was a great example, he found a way to remain playable and avoid injuries to the best extent possible, because not playing at all is a big step down from playing with less risk to injury.

Do you know where discussions stand regarding the electronic strike zone? I would think the PA would like this one. I like the idea of still having an umpire do the actual call with the ability to override though. If it comes down to the umpire reversing a legitimate call, then they are graded down later and possibly relieved of umpiring at the MLB level. As you say, lots of changes coming, most of them solid improvements.

Unlikely Hitting Heroes (...not Bauer)

I am worried more about the errors Rengifo makes, but he has to play out of position with only two outfielders on the active roster right now and Rendon injured. -
We will see, but I think Cobb could still be in the mix next year, if he can be signed at a lower salary. It depends on how he ends this year. The same for Heaney if not traded. Quintana, Bundy and some of these relievers are definitely gone though. Some hard decisions will have to be made at SS and backup catcher, and possibly with Upton on the position side of things. Rendon's situation is not permanent, I think he will bounce back for several decent years. He's actually a great third baseman.

There are only two outfielders on the active roster right now (Lagares and Ward, and Ward has had a day to day finger injury), Madden has to literally throw anyone out there. That is why someone like Rengifo or Goslin gets stuck out there. This team is out of choices as far as outfielders go at the moment. No one is ready in the minors, and Trout, Upton and Fowler are not available. I am a little surprised that they haven't brought up John Jay to play left field, except that he has a weak arm defensively.

He gave Sandoval plenty of room, and same for Canning on Friday evening. Wantz looked very good for a first outing. He seemed to have pretty good command, and threw a variety of pitches at good speed, up to 96 mph I believe. I hope we see more soon. If you get access to a replay, I think he's worth reviewing. I'm finding it hard to criticize Maddon given what he has to work with, and especially trying to manage the fatigue in the bullpen. One thing about Cishek, I wish he would use him to only start innings. His record isn't good with regard to inherited runners, but much better otherwise. Overall I really like R. Iglesias a lot, but you have to realize he is always around the strike zone, and every once in a while somebody will crank one out. He had gone 25 batters without a hit, until they solo dumped one just over the wall in the ninth today. Yes, that could have been a killer, but I think the good is well worth the negative, 16 saves and 6 wins. The problem with these home runs is they stick with the fans a lot longer than the good. Are there better closers? Yes, but not that many really, and everyone wants a Chapman (and oops, was that a grand slam?)
-
Maybe just as impressive is that when he pitched his worst game of the season so far, and only got two outs while giving up 7 runs, his team rallyed around that and won the game in the most unbelievable manner possible against the New York Yankees and Chapman. That is the definition of AWESOME!!!!
