    9. Los Angeles Angels -- Jose Alberto Rivera, RHP (Astros)
Scouting Report: The Astros signed Rivera signed for $10,000 at 19—relatively older for a Latin American signing—so he didn't make his full-season debut until he was 22 in 2019. He has electric arm speed, producing a fastball that ranges from 97-102 mph with lively tailing action. He throws a split-change in the mid-80s, a pitch that progressed throughout the 2019 season to flash above-average by the end of that year. He has a hard slider in the mid-80s as well, but it's not reliable in terms of the pure quality of the pitch or his ability to hit his target. He has an aggressive, high-energy delivery that he will need to corral to repeat more often and improve his strike-throwing ability. His control will probably lead to issues in 2021, but he should be able to stick around the Angels' bullpen as a power reliever.

One of the biggest reasons I think we see at least one trade is because Bundy and Heaney both hit FA in a year, on top of our already numerous rotation question marks. Having some stability would really ease year to year pressures in offseason with the tight budget.
Really any two of Bauer, Snell, Musgrove, Gray, Marquez, Darvish, maybe even Odorizzi, Tanaka, Sugano, Quintana, would be a huge, huge win. And realistic.

If Dodgers end up with Bauer the Angels and the rest of the MLB might as well just give up.

I really do think the Angels will land two very good arms this winter for the rotation. Perry is gonna go for it.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think Bauer will sign with the Mets.
I mean, he's a bit of a narcissist and NY feeds that more than Anaheim does. Mostly, I think they'll just offer him the most money.
I like the guy. He's entertaining. He knows how to have fun and he's willing to interact with fans.
I'm not sure he'll be worth the money he gets though.  He had a helluva year in a short season. I hope he comes to Anaheim because he's an upgrade to the rotation for sure.

I will say this though, if the Angels and Astros swung a trade, Soriano for Rivera....I wouldn't complain too much. I mean, I'd wonder why, but in the end, I think they both end up being relievers. Soriano being great, Rivera being good.
But the Angels probably should've kept Soriano AND drafted Rivera.

I thought we like Stassi because of pitch framing and such.  I don’t really understand the need to commit multi year significant money to McCann.  And I mean if you’re going to do that, just spend a little more and get Realmuto.  I think the Angels should get another catcher - a second guy to replace Bemboom.  I don’t know if they need to commit big money to one to take over as the primary backstop.   Stassi seems solid enough.  What do I know I guess.

I'm high on Perry right now.  But if he spends anywhere close to $8/yr at catcher (especially McCann) i'll have to start considering if/when that turn starts.
If we sign McCann, what's the under/under on how long until we get a thread about giving him some starts at 1B?  Literally the last thing we need is another guy who could make some starts at 1B.

My gut says McCann at age 31 = Jonathan Lucroy at age 31.
If you acquired Lucroy at 31, you got a former all-star catcher who never produced a > 1.0 WAR season again.

    I have an idea.
How about we don't spend money on McCann, and instead utilize those funds towards the pitching staff?

I'm so glad that Burlington is out of the picture. So many games were postponed there due to weather, or just downright cold AF to play in. Terrible elements for players to shine IMO.
I can also go see the High-A #Angels in Tri-Cities, WA! Wine tasting tours by day, minor league baseball by night! 2021 is looking better every day.

I am becoming more convinced that Arte and company should be a focused buyer this off-season rather than a trader.  The free agent market conditions are unlike any other time in history.  I don't think the Angels will get a deal considered "great" this off-season, but I suspect in a couple of years the contracts signed this off-season will be looked upon as "club friendly" when considering the talent and production.

I personally think the local team should go out of their way to make sure the local beat writer consistently gets the scoop first.  It just seems like common courtesy and respect.  It appears that the Angels don't really subscribe to this, and it is a little rude.

Hey I am baffled by the profile pictures of people like Jon Heyman wearing a mask.
Why on earth would someone put up a photo with a mask on?  Do they think they can sneeze through my iPhone screen and infect me?
Or is it as simple as people being interested in branding themselves as “look at me, I care”. . .
So then are we to assume Ken Rosenthal (no mask in his profile photo) doesn’t care and is reckless?
    What a stupid, stupid game.
    Fuck these are weird times.
Maybe Heyman should wear a gag in his photo instead of a mask to more accurately brand himself as someone who shouldn’t be talking at all since he has a record of blathering inaccurate nonsense.

I try not to take MLB.com stuff too seriously. Publications like Fangraphs and Baseball America are all about accuracy of their content, whereas MLB.com will always have a marketing agenda in itself that it is trying to accomplish.

By that, I don't mean they're trying to make Kyren Paris a household name or a star specifically or anything, but they're trying to draw traffic, attention, and credibility to their minor league coverage by pushing casual fans into reading more about guys like Kyren Paris or any other comparable prospect - that is likely their target goal more than being the source for the most reputable minor league content.

Think if Fangraphs wanted to do clickbait. They drop an article almost daily that follows a similar theme. It's fun to read and if it gets casual fans more interested in guys like Kyren Paris, it's only good for the Angels and good for baseball.
