Or you could just admit that the evidence points to him being an asshole that is disliked by the majority of the league and it makes sense that teams don’t want to add that to their clubhouse

Ask the Dodgers players who wanted him off the roster despite the fact that they were a contender and he was helping them win games

That is relief pitcher money these days. The Angels really should make an offer and then suffer even more humiliation when he says, Naw, thanks, but I'm all about winning.

He's not telling him the specific players, but he's telling him to make the trades. It was Arte's call to not trade Ohtani and go "all-in".
Obviously Arte isn't involved in the minor transactions outside of signing a check. But he's 100% hands on with everything else.

I think his bat was always a bit overrated because his minor league numbers were always batting average driven and unlike say a Howie Kendrick, he never hit the ball particularly hard. But at his worst he's like a good version of David Fletcher, lots of contact, tends to spray the ball all over.  I've always thought the criticism of his defense was similarly overstated. He just seems stiff behind the plate, like a guy that knows what he should be doing but has to think the entire way through which is why his framing has always been weak.. He's actually done a good job with the running game, his pop times have always been good, he's just a smaller guy so his blocking isn't great.
This is a good signing IMO because he is an actual MLB talent signed to a minor league deal and not a guy trying to prove he's more than a 4A player.   I don't think people will think much of it but he's as good a bet to put up an OPS+ in the 80-85 range, is a switch hitter and brings value as a back up.

After 20 years I cant believe that some of us cant see, beleive, or understand that Arte has no desire will or want for a rebuild, He wants his stars and toys and he wants to make money, Telling fans hay we suck and are going to suck for a few years dont sell tickets. He would rather finish middle of the pack then finish last. Until he sells the team to a new person with diffrent ideas and goals just know we are signing what ever shinny new thing he can convince to come. I am just thankful that Perry probably talked him off the Ohtani cliff to understand if we sign this guy you will be under his contract for 20 years 10 of witch he wont be selling tickets anymore.

That's the problem, he's not going to let Minasian make smart decisions like Montgomery, Jordan Hicks, Jesse Winker maybe? It's all about name recognition.

I know it's not going to happen because Arte is gonna Arte, but I'd be fine if the Angels just keep signing guys on minor league deals.
I mean is Snell going to get us to the playoffs? Bellinger?
I'd rather have those 4 draft picks in the first 83 picks. 5 in the first 113. Wake Forest has a ton of talent likely to go in the first round so...

Again I’m not even attempting to come across as a prospect guru but isn’t the goal to realistically get 1-2 major leaguers from a draft? I won’t count ohoppe since he was traded for, but wouldn’t 5 guys so far in the bigs and having moderate success be seen as a major plus?

I have no idea what my health will be like then, but I am going to make every effort to go. I don't have many connections right now with Minor Leaguers because of trades and my inability to get out there as much as I used to. But, if we can get some players, Fletcher, and some others, that would be awesome.

Chuck - you need to look at Ohtani’s medicals before you make the deal.

Also, as an owner, you should also leave this decision to your front office staff.

I really don't see anyone out there that hits left handed that moves Moniac out of the outfield or replaces what Ward and Adell bring to the plate as right handers. We have a cost controlled outfield, why add an expense where it isn't needed?
On the infield I see no reason to move the young core, as is Schanuel hits left handed and Rengifo switch hits. If you want to find a left handed hitting 3rd baseman/utility fielder, fine, but again the Angels have switch hitting Rengifo. I'd rather quality hitters over simply a left or right handed hitter.
Pitching, pitching, pitching. That will make or break the Angels next season, not if they have another left handed bat on the bench.

As it stands today the Angels are looking at having 4 of the top 83 picks in the MLB draft -- given the needs at both the MLB level and long term -- I'd be hesitant to sign anyone that would cost them a pick.

    So with that in mind.
Best possible option among SPs is Jordan Montgomery -- like Snell he's another LHP and some of you think that's a non-starter.  Well, the next best option among non LHPs are Stroman, Clevinger, and Lorenzen -- both Clevinger and Lorenzen's projections for 2024 are brutal with ERA near 5.00 -- basically the same as Tyler Anderson.  Lucas Giolito who everyone here has soured on is sitting at 4.31.  If you're looking at a potential value guy -- the projections have Manaea as a 2 fWAR pitcher with an ERA around 4.25.  Montas is another guy who projects well but nobody has any real clue to expect because of injury, he's talented but a pure reclamation project right now.
IMO, Montgomery despite his handedness is likely the surest bet and incredibly despite his awful showing last season Anaheim, Giolito may end up being a value guy.  I need to really pour over his predictive stuff but this may be a case of his being a tall midget.
    OF
People seem to really like Hernadez and Soler because past power numbers.  Soler has the better projection at 1.9 fWAR, Hernandez is at 1.4.  Both are expected to cost more than Gurriel Jr who is younger and not the nightmare defensively the other two are.  Harrison Bader has a really rosy projection but like all the others is a RHB.  If they want to look for a LHB the best two options are the defensively talented Kiermaier, and the defensively challenged Joc Pedersen.   Joey Gallo still exists, still hits bombs, can still play defense but hasn't hit above above .200 since 2018 and has only hit above .209 once in his entire MLB career -- oh yeah his K rate was back over 40% last season.
My first choice would be Gurriel Jr -- Joc Pederson may be cheaper and as a LHP brings something to the table as well.
    IF
Probably the ugliest portion of the FA crop.  Amed Rosario and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are likely the most well rounded, but neither brings much pop..  If you want more pop then you have Rowdy Tellez and Dom Smith as guys who can go yard but haven't lived up to their early "hype" -- Smith is a lefty and rarely Ks, so he's got that going for him.  Neither guy can play anywhere in the IF other than at 1B.  Michael Chavis is another guy I'd list as still existing. He can play all over the IF, he's just never lived up to what even the most modest of projections for him were.  In some ways he's this generation's Grant Green.  Urshela and his single hip are out there too and is the eternal FA Jurickson Profar.
Justin Turner is 100 years old, but at least his bat still worked last year but another RHB
There really isn't anything worth spending anything other than the least possible $$$ among the IF options but I do kind of like Dom Smith as a possible value guy -- mostly because he's a LHB.
RPs are all over the place -- lots of guys who could possibly help or be awul like every other off-season.  There are names available still Moore, Nerris, Hicks, Chapman, Matsui, Fujinami, Stanek (he looked bad last season), but as always "RPs are flakes" -- @Blarg
If the best way to respectability is to try to add guys in the 1.5-2 fWAR range then the best option is likely to add SPs and look to trade from whatever depth is created there.  Detmers/Sandoval/Canning are all projected to be 2 fWAR guys -- Silseth could get there with 150+ innings.
    In conclusion...
This is a bad FA crop/four picks in the top 83

    Pick your poison.

If you're not on social media or don't watch the MLB Network, disregard this post. You're just fine right where you're at.
But holy hell if you scroll through timelines on any social media app, especially X, or you're a daily viewer of the MLB Network... it's non-stop Dodgers this, Shohei Ohtani that. Just wait for the season to start, it's going to get worse.
I was going to post some examples here for those who aren't on social media and the fawning that's 24/7 on the MLB Network over Ohtani and the Dodgers, but I'll spare you.
MLB always wanted Ohtani to be on the Dodgers or the Yankees. They got their wish and now fans of all 29 other teams have to suffer if they choose to continue to get their news & have dialogue with other fans on these outlets.
So, thank you for those here who are Angels fans through thick and thin and have called AngelsWin.com your home for all things Halos and more.. 🙏

It absolutely kills me to say this, but I really like what Dipoto did for the Mariners after the 2018 season. They had improved from a sub-.500 team to an 89 win team. And he promptly tore it down.
That offseason he dealt Paxton, Diaz, Cano, Segura, and others for Crawford, Kelenic, Dunn, Swanson. They were bad in 2019. But they added Caballero that summer, and in the next year, guys like France, Brash, Munoz, Trammell. Guys who are part of their team now, or were used to bring in other pieces. They were bad again in 2020, going 27-33, so not horrible.

In the three years since they've won 90, 90, and 88.
It was more of a rebuild than I think the Angels need, but it wasn't a complete teardown. Dipoto retooled and set the team up with a young core, flexible payroll, and exchanged vet contracts for other players with more control to extend the competitive window for his young team, and it's worked out pretty well.
To bring it back to the post above, trying to force 2024 into being a contending year screams bad idea to me, and in some ways, what's happening in Seattle is seeing how rushing/forcing a core too quick can backfire, as opposed to what Atlanta did. Toronto is a similar example compared to Seattle...their deals for Springer, Ryu, Berrios all backfired to a degree. The Angels should not shy away from improving the team this winter, but they should proceed cautiously. Currently, Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel aren't free agents for six more seasons, until after 2029. O'Hoppe one year before that. All three have scant MLB experience, all of which have been under the specter of winning immediately for Troutani. Plunking down down for Snell or Bellinger could backfire just as Seattle and Toronto's big investments have thus far, without really pushing them any deeper all while burning up critical years of cheap, prime club control.

I really hope they don't go after Bellinger.  Handedness, position wise, dude make sense.  But those batted ball numbers leave me cold.  His defense makes it so you can look past his offense to a degree -- but he's going to get paid like he's the hitter he was last year (I think).

And here in lies the problem with the organization. Arte needs to give the money to the baseball people and step back. If the coaching staff and the players are in support of Bauer, you make the move. If Washington and/or Trout says they have concerns from the player or coach perspective, you dont do it. Never should it be Arte making this decision. You want players to buy in? Empower them!
