I think it was the 80’s as well. The game seemed simple and athletic. AstroTurf was awful, but seeing the Cardinals and Royals use it to their advantage both offensively and defensively was something I enjoyed.  There were gappers that turned into triples.  There were stolen bases.  No one cared how much a player was making, you were just happy he was on your team.  We cared about batting average, home runs, RBI, stolen bases.  Guys like Tim Foli and Bob Boone would get a run in from 3rd with one out it felt like every single time.  Now those guys would be ridiculed for not being able to hit and drive the ball.  Also baseball was just more special at least as an Angel fan because it was scarce, it wasn’t on TV every single day. We didn’t have the internet to bitch about the team everyday.  It also felt like there were more personalities that played then as well.  You had hot heads like Mario Soto and Joaquin Andujar that would throw inside and that was just how it was.  You had Reggie being Reggie and being the Don King of himself.  I think that is one of the reason’s I went from a fan to a fanatic during the Scioscia time because they ran the bases aggressively and had a good pen for a number of years.  It was just fun baseball.
Thank you for watching my Ted Talk.

    This.
Though like someone else said in this thread, I'm most fond of my days following the Angels and baseball in general by listening to the games on the radio, watching on tv and being the first one to retrieve the newspaper in the driveway so I can check out the box score and read the recap.

Summer 1980 was when we started with cable and I was able to watch the Cubs WGN during the day, Braves TBS at 4:30pm and go to the Halo game at 7:35pm... I was a fan of the Halos earlier in the 70's we would ride our bikes to the stadium and watch the games and baseball games we would watch on tv. There was nothing other than the game of the week on Saturday mid day.

The 1960s. It was when I first became acquainted with the game. Players were heroes and seemed larger than life. Seeing a game on television was a rare treat, because we only got one game per week. Salaries were more in line with the general public, and players didn't constantly jump from team to team chasing money.

More than likely that is why Arte kept him away from his interview.

Reading what he tweeted then watching that exchange, the dude was a gigantic bitch.  He's laughing along with Rendon, he admits he answered his question, and still he tries to paint him in a way that fuels his narrative.
    That was chickenshit AF.

If you can't view that exchange as anything other than Blum trying to poke at the guy, then maybe you're just a "Blum simp" and need to sit this one out.

You either go for it, and spend like a big market club, or you cut bait and sell. The only wrong way to go about this is exactly what the Angels are doing. Not selling, but not signing anyone impactful.

I respect a man who puts his kids and marriage before his job. He's right; it's just a job. But he's not a software programmer or ad salesman. Millions of strangers from around the world watch his "job" for entertainment. More than that, so many kids dream of playing Major League Baseball but only a fraction of a percent ever get that chance.
He could show some humility and gratefulness for getting to do something very, very few people ever get to do — AND still prioritize his family life. He makes more than enough money to allow for quality time with wife and kids all throughout the year.

and to me, it would make the team substantially better.
But I don't know man, the baseball people in the front office wouldn't trade Ohtani because they thought they had a chance to make the postseason and liked their chances at retaining the superstar, yet most of the players knew all along he was gone.
The disconnected from the people down on the ground and those in the front office is mind boggling.

    /Slow clap.
Ole Arte found a new way to say "we don't have a problem spending money if it's the right guy", if only it wasn't Arte who gets to pick who "the right guy" is.
And people say you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Honestly, if he's gonna spend a pile of money, I'd rather a bunch of it goes into player development, minor leagues, amateur scouting, etc.  Get us out of the perpetual bottom of the organizational rankings.  Please.

I'm down if Montgomery signs for something closer to Rodriguez's 4/$80m versus the 6/$150m that MLBTR predicted.
Both going into their age 31 in '24.

they did such a nice job last year of completing the team.
Right now, they have Adell and Stefanic as their primary backups which means about 400 PA min for each of them.  And that's counting Rendon as an everyday player.   The rest of the depth is the JV AAA squad.
Silseth is their #5 starter with depth of Bachman, Daniel, Plesac, Rosenberg and Suarez.
They need three more major leaguers even if they are of Urshela level quality.
The problem with having those high priced guys available is that there still a lot of stupid left for them to do if they want.

There has to be some mental skill involved to sit on the bench when the rest of the team is in the field. Knowing you only get 4 or 5 chances to actually contribute to the game night after night. There must be some discipline involved to stay engaged.

Probably not a position that some players can handle.

Herget spent over half of the year in AAA, he only had 26 appearances. Quijada only appeared in 10 games. Neither were a core of the pen in either Salt Lake or Anaheim.

Trout has to be in the lineup of he's healthy. Whatever position that comes at is context dependent. But Rendon....I think he should be the DH most days and play 3B on the days Trout needs a rest. And even between DH and 3B, I'm guessing Rendon will require consistent rest as well, which opens up plenty of playing time all around.
The other thing is Rendon has to hit and be a difference matter, because we know that Drury and Rengifo likely will.

Well that is definitely true, but then you move Rengifo over to 3rd and Drury to 2nd. With Trout, idk.
