mmc got a reaction from jsnpritchett in Angels trade Jimmy Herget to the Braves for cash
Read your posts including your reasons for thinking Herget had value. Ultimately none of them mean anything if teams don’t think Herget is any good at this stage of career. Which we know they don’t considering he didn’t make our team nor was called up at any point and no team was willing to give up any asset for him

Or, Herget was DFAd, no one was interested in trading any asset for him so he was gonna just go on waivers and the Braves offered cash to not risk getting passed up. There’s no reason whatsoever to think Herget had trade value.

Riiighttt... you're absolutely right in premise but.... This is a guy who is 30 years old, has 3-4 more years of team control, an option remaining, and put up a 2.48 ERA in 2022.
You sure you can't get a player back for that if you talk to the right people at the right time?
I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it and its could've/would've/should've but....... ya could've.

mmc reacted to jsnpritchett in Blum interview with Sandoval: "I don’t necessarily give a fuck what people think anymore. Be me."
Excerpts:
"It was around that time, and in that 2022 season, that Sandoval said he started to become far more cognizant, and concerned about how people interpreted his reactions on the mound. Instead of being himself, he says, he’s managed his demeanor in a way he believes has hindered him, keeping things bottled inside, not letting the pissed-off part of him show. The results haven’t been there. Now, he says, he’s going to start letting that anger flash a little more when needed.
“It’s gotten to a point where I have to consciously be aware of other people’s feelings,” Sandoval said. “It’s just not who I am when I’m on the mound. I turn into a different person. I have to flip the switch. And I need to pitch the way I want to pitch.”
...
"Sandoval said that when he pitches poorly, when he’s mad at himself, “I can’t even look at myself in the f—— mirror.”
So much of the narrative surrounding Sandoval has been those emotions, and his perceived inability to respond to adversity. The 23 unearned runs he allowed last season give some credence to that hypothesis. When something bad happened behind him, he didn’t regroup effectively.
When asked if that self-directed anger could be hindering him, Sandoval pushed back.
“For me, it’s something that locks me in a little bit more,” he said. “I can’t let anyone take that side away from me. And I feel like I have the last couple years. Subconsciously thinking about what others think about how I react or how I get to work. I can’t do that.”

mmc reacted to UBstrange in Thought experiment: $100k charity donation for giving up leadoff walks
The reason the Angels lost, you might think, was because Mike Trout struck out to end the game. On the surface, this appears to be true. Looking deeper, the problem was Jose Suarez's lack of incentive. He walked the leadoff batter in the 6th inning and they scored on a HR. Even with Trout striking out and Suarez giving up the HR, had he not walked the leadoff batter before the HR, we would have gone to the bottom of the 9th in a 4-4 game instead of the game ending, 5-4.
Imagine if you could fine any Angels pitcher $100,000 every time he walked a leadoff batter. If you're about to lose a bunch of money, that's a very strong motivator. You might think that they already have an incentive, which is to stay on the team and not get cut. True, that is some basic everyday incentive, but it's not enough to prevent leadoff walks. You have to attack their wallet. Enter the player's association. And now you see another problem with why we can't fix certain issues: The player's association prohibiting it.
Ron Washington should tell every pitcher on the staff that for every leadoff walk that they give up (only the walks to start an inning), they should donate $100,000 to an Angels charity as a personal punishment, not as a fine. The economist in me says that would work almost instantly because the incentive is too strong not to do it. You'd see more leadoff HRs and other hits, but you'd rarely see a leadoff walk.
Question: Would you rather see more leadoff HRs and hits if it meant there was almost never a leadoff walk?
