Any team that sustained the problems with pitching that we have this year would suck. Any. Team.

    - Best pitcher misses the entire season because of TJS

    - Next best pitcher literally dies.

    - Both FA acquisitions crapped the bed, performing significantly worse than career norms. (Yes, other teams deal with this. E.g. Sonny Gray in NY and Eovaldi this year.)

    - The next two best pitchers are currently on the IL

    - The next best pitcher’s knee blew up.

That is our seven best pitchers. Who do you think we should run out there? Do you think the Yankees have seven extra aces sitting in their farm system ready to take over for this apparently perfectly normal scenario? The genius Astros would obviously be prepared to replace seven pitchers.

You can whine about Harvey and Cahill, but they were one year contracts in a year where we weren’t expected to seriously compete. Everything else was out of everyone’s control. Blaming anyone, whether that’s Arte, Billy, or Aus, just makes you look dumb.

Yeah, it sucks watching the team get blown out. But this is pure, ignorant jackassery. Seriously, get a clue.

Get a clue?  How about you lay off the Kool-Aid sunshine pumper?  How do you explain the last decade?  Seriously?  I’ve been a loyal fan since the mid-70s.  I’ve seen it all with this organization.  Fact is, this team has hit a plateau with the current ownership.  This organization is a .500 to sub .500 organization under this ownership for the better part of the past 10 years.  Nothing changes until you change ownership.  Arte is a meddling arrogant owner cut from the same cloth as Jerry Jones.  Arte thinks he is the smartest baseball man in the room because he made nearly $1B selling billboard space - that is where the problem lies...

  2. This ownership and management flat out sucks...  What a dumpster fire.  This team consistently underachieves and the Dish Network blackout is a blessing in disguise.  Now Arte is stuck with a wannabe manager as no quality manager wants to work for meddling Arte.  This will likely get much worse.  This organization has a losing mentality and has had for the better part of the last decade.  Light at the end of the tunnel is ownership change.

If the season was actually over, it would be a mercy. No, you've got two more months of enduring this shitshow before it's allowed to be over.

Agreed.  I'll add that the season was over before it started with the lazy hiring of Ausmus.  Team is going nowhere with the current admin and management - I don't care who is on the field.  This team will be good when an ownership change finally occurs.

  4. The Angels organization is a complete sh*t show from top to bottom.  Clueless and arrogant owner, equally clueless GM and a manager that literally no one else wanted or even had minimal interest in.  What a travesty that Trout is stuck in this mess.  Arte could have saved a bunch of money picking up a coach from a High School baseball coach job fair and still had an unimpressive .500 record at this point.   Wow, what a continuing disappointment and waste of talent/payroll...

  5. Step 1:  Get a back hoe and dig as deep of a hole as possible to begin the season.

Step 2:  Bring in a mining crew to dig even deeper.

Step 3: Cross your fingers that the rest of the teams in your division will go into a slump so you can hopefully gain ground on them.

  6. Let me guess...one game at a time, it’s a long season, we’ve got a bunch of guys out there grinding trying to figure some things out...sound familiar?  New season, new manager.  1-5 is not the way to start out.  The last time the Angels won a post season game was almost a decade ago now - will be a decade in October.  Considering the payroll this team has carried the past 10 years, this team and ownership does not deserve an ounce of patience from it’s fan base.  The Angels have been the poster child for underachievement for the better part of 10 years.  I’m not saying Ausmus should be throwing fits and benching players.  Where is the John Lackey and Jered Weaver fire from anyone on this team?  They have such a ho-hum & oh-well attitude when it comes to losing - probably because they’re so used to it.  This team has lacked a team leader for a long time and needs one in the worst way.

  7. After the retirement of Scioscia and the great news of the Trout contract, it appears as if nothing much has changed with this listless Angels team.  Pretty embarrassing way to start the season.  Maybe Arte could cut a deal with MLB where his mediocre Angels team can play in the Cactus League year-round.  They may have a chance at a winning record in that league.  What a massive disappointment...

So he had no part in developing those guys into the coaches they became?

Didn't say that.  The mediocre results of the past near decade now speak for themselves...time for MS to move on as whatever message he is selling is either stale, outdated or falling on deaf ears for quite some time now.

So do you think sosh changed, from the guy who led the 2000s teams, or the roster the last 5 or so years has been...dogshit?

Sosh struck gold with mike trout. He stuck his foot in shit quicksand with bullpen issues and starting pitching health.

The current team has trout, upton and simmons. It 'had' ohtani. The rest is crap mostly. And aside from new faces, the same talent level merry go round of crap weve been rolling out since about 2015.

I blame sosh for a poor roster about as much as i believe he whispered some wisdom in EYJs ear last year when he had that fluke stretch.

Anyway, this team will be better next year and especially in 2020. And sosh wont be running it either way.

Scioscia had the benefit of an Allstar coaching staff in the early to mid-2000s. with the likes of Maddon, Black and Roenicke.  You cannot compare his current staff as they are continents apart in talent.  Has he changed?  Absolutely.  The World Series 2002 team and the following few years played small ball and manufactured runs better than most.  They were a difficult team to defend and did not rely on the HR ball.  Pitching was substantially better especially considering the JV squad bullpen they have had the past few years.  I'm not sure this current bullpen could shut down a good coed softball team at times... Less glamour but much more effective.

Not pathetic, simply average.  They sit in the middle of the league in nearly every hitting category.  Early on, I believed the Angels would have trouble getting to the playoffs with Pujols hitting cleanup.  Now it doesn't matter.  So many holes, so little time.  It is frustrating to watch Trout try to carry an average team.

I agree they would be "Average" if they were a small market, low budget team (ala the A's).  They are not.  Scioscia has had the luxury of a top 5- 7 payroll for the better part of the last decade and accomplished nothing...literally nothing.  Some of it is stupid signings/player personnel decisions - Josh "rehab" Hamilton comes to mind here.  Given their financial resources and the market they represent, they are pathetic...

    Theyve only appeared in 3.

Sosh will be gone after this year. If the identical roster returns next year, we will still be screwed.

For all the sosh haters, hes coached the best player in baseball his whole career...just as sosh has zero to do with trouts success, sosh also isnt forcing the pen to suck.

Exactly my point...they've only appeared in 3...and are 0-3.  Underachievement.

what will your brilliant solution be when the new manager starts losing too?

The Angels haven't won a playoff game in 9+ years so I guess this mediocre baseball is okay with you.  Take a page from the Red Sox upper management who recognized a leadership void (Francona who won titles in 2004 and 2007) and made a manager change only to go on and win a World Series in 2013.  The Angels have been stuck in neutral for quite some time now under Scioscia regardless of who the players/GM are.  During this decade-long drought the Angels have enjoyed a top 4-7 payroll.  I guess the Angels should stick with what is obviously not working...

A+ post. So many intriguing angles that I had never considered. My baseball knowledge and wisdom have increased.

The problem with many Angel fans is that mediocrity has gone from being accepted to expected...There is no excuse for the mediocre product they have provided for years now considering the payroll and resources this team has had available to them.  It's a lack of leadership and direction.  Team is flat and as soft as a roll of Charmin from top to bottom.

  14. This team under Scioscia isn't getting anywhere near the playoffs.  It would take a few teams to completely collapse for the Angels to make the playoffs this year.  Thank God Arte has not extended Scioscia's contract (yet).  I have never seen a more dismal bullpen and lack of leadership that there is with this team under Scioscia.  This team needs new leadership and direction badly as they are wasting Trout's first half of his career.

  15. Mike Scioscia should absolutely be let go after this season.  I'm not sure about midway through the season but whatever message he is selling is and has been falling on deaf ears as this is a VERY soft baseball team.  MS has had a top 7 payroll for a decade+ and hasn't won squat.  Multiple GMs, Multiple players, yada yada yada.  This team could manage themselves to a similar record. The players and fans deserve much better.  Team is flat and wasting away the first half of Trout's career.  What a waste of talent!
