  1. 10 bucks says Bumgarner and his 3.13 career ERA ends up out performing Wheeler over the next 5 seasons.
  2. If the Cubs would take Cozart and we were willing to take Kimbrel, it would significantly lower the prospect cost for Contreras. I don’t think they’d part with Marsh or Adell. But Rengifo and a few of the top prospects other than Adell or Marsh makes a lot of sense. If it costs Adams, I’d hate to see him go, but I could see it.
  3. Bumgarner is as good of a bet as Ryu to be a 1/2 starter. He’s one year and one month older than Cole, one year younger than Strasburg. You’re buying his 30-34 seasons with a five year deal. He’s 10 months older than Wheeler. He had a Freak shoulder injury, and then came back and threw 200 innings with a 3.9 ERA for a bad team. He’s a workhorse with a history of success. I’d love to have him on our team. One funny note, he’s actually started a game against every team in the league, except one...and beaten every NL team. He’s never started against the Angels... so if they sign him, he won’t likely ever do so.
  4. If money is equal, it comes down to this.. 1) Yankees are always a winner 2) Angels have been a winner in the last, could be again soon 3) Angels play in his Hometown 4) Yankees have a great team 5) Angels have a good lineup, which will get better and they have the best player in baseball. Plus Ohtani, plus Adell, plus Maddon. Plus no trash can...
  5. Cots baseball contracts has a very accurate spreadsheet for all 30 teams
  6. Bumgarner really should be third behind Cole and Strasburg. If they have a chance to get both those guys to add to Ohtani, Heaney, Bundt, and Canning. I’d be elated.
  7. Thaiss had a great September and hopefully he buildS on it.
  8. I really want the Angels to do the Red tops and White Pants as their regular uniforms, with the all whites as the Sunday or alternates. Then they do the Red Tops and Gray uniforms as their road uniforms with Navy Blue tops and gray pants as their Sunday or Alternates.
  9. I actually only think they need to add a bat if it’s an elite position player .... Unless they decide to bring back Calhoun to play some RF, and some 1B. I like Thaiss the most of the “reinforcements” and think he’ll end up getting most of the playing time at 1st, (say 75-80 games, while Pujols gets 65-70, and LaStella or someone else gets 12-22) and some at 3rd. Unless we sign or trade for a 3rd basemen.
  10. Yeah but Donaldson’s commitment will be less and so will his money. In 3 seasons they can get another 3B via free agency or can draft a college hitter at the position this draft with an eye on the future, or Fletcher can end up at 3b too. Wilson / Jones at 2nd.
  11. Let’s stop with the recency bias too guys... David has one year plus of experience, Simmons has 7? It’s far easier to predict what a player will do with experience than one without. Another example is La Stella, is he the new player we saw last year or a platoon player? Donaldson I felt was always a bit overrated, but he really hits and is a GG defender.
  12. Simmons is a much better shortstop than Fletch. Simmons had a better bat but was a little off last year. No one wants to give value for a player off a down year so I doubt he’s traded.
  13. I’ve never been a fan, but am now wondering if they sign Cole and fail to get Wheeler, would they be better off trying to get Donaldson or Rendon. With Fletcher and La Stella, along with Rengifo, Thaiss, Ward, Cozart, they have infield depth.... Signing a premier hitter (especially Donaldson, who would not require a long commitment) may be just the thing to put them over the top.
  14. I don’t understand the Smith move unless they’ve already got something in the works. They definitely need a catcher now, perhaps two.
  15. If they’re healthy Angels should take a flyer on one of these guys. Not claiming necessarily but trying to sign for a lower number than arbitration would’ve paid perhaps on a two year contract
  16. Actually, it was close: Starters and Primary Pitchers accounted for 779.1 IP, and a 5.68 ERA. Bullpen and Openers were close to 656.2 IP, and an ERA of 4.40. I'd forgotten I did the spreadsheet. I am missing one start of 6.2, with 7 ER / 10 R but I don't know where I messed up. I must've just mistyped one, now I can't figure it LOL. Bottom Line is SP needs to be improved and BP should improve with less innings and the subtraction of the bad pitchers and a new pitching coach.
  17. @ettin I'm sure you grabbed the stats from somewhere, but I am interested to see how the pitching numbers are affected by using the "opener" which I do not expect to continue in 2020. I think the number was even worse for the starters, if you include their "primary pitcher" and ditch the opener. And likewise, the pen actually probably ranks better if you include the 30 or so starts made by the openers, and drop out the poor "primary pitcher" stats.
  18. And the year later, the Red Sox won the World Series by using the payroll flexibility.
  19. I'd take on Eovaldi if it meant getting Betts for a lower prospect cost, but Price is a bit much to take on. And I think that Betts would totally leave after one season, but they would get the qualifying draft pick.
  20. Clevinger wasn't a highly rated prospect at the time he was traded for Pestano. He wasn't a high draft pick, and had 4.41 ERA in his first season at A ball the year he was traded. I don't know what his record was when he was traded vs. after as it's just a summary of the whole year. Regardless, wasn't setting the world on fire. He had a 9.56 ERA in rookie ball, and hadn't been healthy in three previous years managing just 14 appearances (11 starts) ove the 2011, 2012, and 2013 seasons. I don't think you trade for Hader, but you have to trade quality to get quality, and the Angels did need relief help at the deadline in 2014. Still, yes, you are right in that relievers are a hard commodity to actualize, and that their performance swings from year to year are much more frequent now than ever before in the past...
  21. This is the only type of deal they could move Cozart in please stop saying it’s not possible. It’s possible in a deal like this. Whether he ever suits up or contributes value to the Sox is irrelevant.
  22. One or two years slightly over the $208 / $210 threshold isn't gonna kill the team.
  23. They've done this kind of proposed offseason spending before. Arte committed $254+$77.5+$85+34+35+3... Between 2011 and 2012, (including Weaver's extension in August)... Now, that was on a $140 M payroll, which has since been pushed about $20-$40. The Angels highest opening day payroll has been at $166.6 in 2018, but year end luxury tax payroll that year was at $176.7 down from $188.5. 2019 was at $158.9 Opening Day, and will end somewhere close to the previous years $176.7- 40 man payroll... I'd assume. For 2020, I can see an Opening Day payroll of $200. He'll try not to go over the tax.
