They cannot afford both without sacrificing every other roster spot.  So you have a Cy Young quality pitcher with no bullpen support or defense and a DH with holes in the offense. Sounds like another 75 win season.

It's one or the other and I think Snell moves the Angels toward competitiveness more than the Unicorn.

I disagree, they absolutely can afford both.

Seems like anyone could have confirmed that. Surprised he didn't list the Giants either.
It really boils down to the Angels and Dodgers.
Dodgers can offer money and win-now team
Angels can offer money and comfort.

Something i've been thinking about would be the idea of Arte swooping in and telling Ohtani he will spend for additional help like Yamomoto and/or others. Plus trades. There has to be a reason they didn't want to trade him and Arte took back the team. I wouldn't be shocked if he comes back home.

The other part of me hopes Ohtani feels like he owes it to the Angels in a small form. They let him do whatever he wanted and his injuries definitely hasn't helped the team. Part of their failures is on him is a small way. (This will trigger some people).

They said this wasn't exclusive list, but even adding the Yankees and the Giants makes this list a decent list. The fact that the Angels are still on it, makes me hopeful.

  3. What is the 2024 projected roster's biggest weakness?

The Angels in 2023 gave up 829 Runs after giving up 668 the year before. Some of this is pitch clock, the shift, and the larger bases, for sure...but the Angels pitching staff also really regressed. Is this a lack of Max Stassi, and Thaiss being the Primary Catcher?

They also scored 739 runs, up from 623. But the offense had trouble moving runners over and hitting with runners in scoring position.

Both years had tons of injuries. Way more than they should have given their average age and the fact that they don't play on Turf.

Fielding was terrible last year, as Rendon who used to be a good fielder, wasn't in there, and Rengifo struggled. They didn't have Velazquez of 2022, he was not the fielder he had been the year previous (.926 Fielding pct in 2023 vs. .979 in 2022). Neto showed flashes, but also only played about half the season.

Nevin wasn't really a great manager by the numbers, either year, going 73-89 last season, and 46-60 the year before. They seemed to have fixed this with Ron Washington and Company, but we'll see how it goes.

How do you fix these concerns?

  4. MY prediction is as follows:

    1) Ohtani re-signs, they get two starters, one via trade (not Glasnow) and one via free agency (Gray or Stroman or Imanga). They also sign Jung Ho Lee from Korea and an infielder. Yes I realize this is likely (45+22+10)

    2) Ohtani signs elsewhere, they sign Bellinger (25 per but over 11) and get Yamamoto (7 years 203). They also sign a lower tier starter like Seth Lugo (3/42). They also sign Tim Anderson (1 year 7M).

The Moose obsession is weird. He was a bad hitter last year, full stop. I realize he brings a good clubhouse and dugout presence, but....he can't really hit anymore.

He hit fine in limited action, but when he was pressed into more regular duty, he slipped.

He also fell apart the time the whole team did, around August 9-10. He has a .278 BA and an .806 after the game on August 9th. He finished the season slumping down to .247 and .627.

That means that in his first 273 PA these were his numbers.

His last 113 plate appearances dropped his average 30 points for the year and his OPS down to 170 points. That's a major slump. He had 2 walks in this time frame and 4 sacrifice hits. So he was 19 for 107, (.178 BA) with 29 strikeouts (25.6%). His OBP would be nearly what his average is (.186) and his SLG would have been incredibly low (.215).

On a minor league deal, he's still a good bench bat.

We've been back and forth on this a few times before.  Yes, the debt is an issue--but the dramatic loss of cable subscribers and the massive pushback from cable providers on carriage fees have become more immediate concerns.

And if you've been following the most recent articles and reporting, it seems unlikely at this point that Bally will keep any sort of MLB rights package (whether broadcast, streaming, or a mix of the two) in the medium/long run, even for individual teams.

The loss of carriage and rights fees wouldn't be as pressing without the massive debt. They have no positive cash flow to speak of. Terrible deal.

  7. This was about the debt used to finance the deal, more than the revenues being down from cable and streaming but those did have an effect. It was a bad deal that shouldn't have been approved...the debt load alone was way too massive.

Going forward, the teams with the best opportunity to have a streaming package will be kept, likely and the ones without will be dropped.

Why do you want the Angels to get worse?

India hasn't been great since his rookie year I guess, I just liked him then. I wouldn't do the trade I proposed, but I would do one where they got India and a top prospect for Rengifo, Adell, and an Arm.

This was in comparison to signing Tim Anderson, which I totally oppose. I am also sick of Rengifo's defense and his hot and cold bat.

The Reds have a glut of position players they are trying to trade, and your solution is to give them two out of options position players for a quality player?

    So, no. Not enough.

They have a glut of infielders, but are in need of an outfielder, and starting pitching.

No Matter what happens, I just hope our fanbase is prepared to only receive a comp pick after all of this.

To me, that will be the biggest blow to this organization. I'm iffy on spending $50M+ on a guy, but Jesus they had 2 chances to rebuild their organization and shit on themselves both times.

My gut feeling: Angels and Arte Moreno offer stupid money to do anything they can to keep him, miss out on the Ohtani sweepstakes and then Arte announces sometime this year that he is ready to sell. Like i've said all along, this is Arte's last "F-You" to the fans.

Yeah, you never get good value when you are the one trading the superstar. Am not talking stars, I'm talking top 10 players.

    Betts trade...Red Sox got screwed.

    Cabrera trade....Marlins got screwed.

    Stanton trade... Marlins got screwed

    Texiiera trade...Braves got screwed

    A-Rod trade....Rangers got screwed

I tend to agree.  This especially so if front office often dictates in game strategy.

I tend to think the hiring of an experienced manager and the firing of Alex Tamin would dictate that this will no longer be the case. I doubt Snitker is getting in game notes from Alex Anthropoulous the way Nevin and Maddon were from Perry. More of overall strategy and analytical notes. Not pull this guy or use this bullpen arm.

  12. While I wasn’t happy with the hiring, mainly because of off the field stuff that I remembered and his age. But I was encouraged by the staff rumored solid mix of veterans and young coaches. There was no mention of a pitching coach or bullpen coach that I saw

Two former Angels to me fit the bill. Dan Haren has been a pitching strategist for the D’Backs for the past few seasons and was a young pitcher for the A’s while Washington was on the staff.

And of course if they could pry Percy away from UCR. Don’t know if he’d do that for the bullpen job, but perhaps as a pitching coach .
