  1. there's a strong part of me that likes to feel the uniqueness of a special moment. do i cheer against my team? no, but in the ninth inning that part of me wants to be in the presence of something special and rare, regardless of where it's coming from. i think a lot of people probably feel that way, i think it's why people always say they were there when they weren't, it's that regret of knowing you missed out on a moment.
  2. there were 7 baseball games on yesterday, it was the 2nd day of the season, myself and 2 others tried to watch a game and not a single game was televised at any time. that's one of the reasons why baseball is no longer the national past time. j
  3. i'll tell you chuck, it's rare that a forum becomes anything more than "just a forum". what you guys have been able to achieve with this site and the legitimate partnership you guys have made with the angels at the highest levels has really impressed me. as a business owner i sincerely congratulate you, i'm sincerely and truly impressed. it's amazing what a person can achieve in this world, even with a fauxhawk.
  4. that's not the model for staying alive in an online news world. it's a model for dying, in my opinion. why would i pay to read a local beat writer's wrap up of information i can get for free from all kinds of sources? is it because of their snappy witticisms and hilarious sidebars? i can easily live without them, and that's not intended in any way as a disrespect for their position, but let's be honest, their contributions are totally nonessential. i don't understand why newspapers find it so hard to realize that their revenue streams are going to be ad based among other online revenue streams rather than subscriber based. charging me, the customer, for something i can get it's equal to for free is not a healthy long term approach for any business.
  5. he's a good player for sure, but he's not super special in my judgement.
  6. sure, but they dfa him three days later? we didn't even ask about any major league relievers? that seems weird.
  7. how'd we not get him in "the trade?"
  8. i think he's had two good years in a row not just one, if memory serves. i'm just sayin'
  9. i believe calhoun has the potential to be a solid everyday corner outfielder. i don't think he'll get that opportunity with the angels, but you never know. i like him a lot.
  10. i know that information was posted by some national writer, but i think it's incorrect. i believe that the luxury tax is calculated by using average annual salary. this would prevent teams from messing with their tax liabilities. i believe when you see differences in annual avg salary within a player's contract that the purpose is serving the teams payroll projections and not actually luxury tax obligations or threshholds.
  11. our pitching will be league avg. i'm maintaining my belief that spring doesn't matter.
  12. piazza is a stretch. best hitting catcher of all time is a tall order.
  13. tony gwynn could i.d. the pitchers grip on the ball before his release, many others can as well. the most interesting that i ever heard was edgar martinez, the great seattle dh, would practice in the cage with a tennis machine that would fire tennis balls at 150 mph. he had the balls marked with color dots and numbers and he would focus on identifying the color and the number as the ball came in. obviously, he felt the exercise helped his ability to see the seams and the rotation of the baseball. amazing.
  14. the only thing that surprised me in that article were the comments by jerry reinsdorf. i salute him and the rest can **** off and die.
  15. look at what he did last year and tell me he won't last much longer in mlb. that's silly.
  16. i don't believe that comparing nolan's contributions to magic's is equitable to nolan in any way. the rangers were literally perennial losers before his arrival, and while jon daniel's contributions, to their sea change in culture, can in no way be minimized i don't see how nolan's can be either. their pitchers were soft and wilted under the texas heat, nolan was the one credited with that change in approach and attitude. being that they were the same pitchers having improved results, i don't see how the general manager would be credited with that improvement. i think the gm's major accomplishment was the amateur talent improvements both foreign and domestic.
  17. i saw that a bit ago, but i didn't want to touch it. i think there's some botox happening there, rather than rhinoplasty.
  18. i'm very concerned for our staff. like an oracle, i see many torrents surround them.
  19. this is either a common internet occurrence or the work of genius.
  20. perhaps i don't speak wellsish, but does that even make sense?
  21. that was a bad article by dwyer and he somewhat misrepresented dipoto's commitment to advanced analytics. i didn't appreciate his obvious disdain for advanced stats.
