A long time ago I watched a John Stossel special on Socialism. I didn't know what it was, and I learned a lot. He explained how Hong Kong works,
India as a socialist democracy, etc. Hint ~ it should be shown in our schools.

I would love to claim I'm a libertarian but I honestly believe there are too many people out there who want to be led around by the nose and that any void left by lack of state would get filled by ever more undesirable types.. I just wish we could swing the balance waaaaay back in the other direction toward localized control and self-sufficiency

Saying "I'm not racist, youngster, but my generation is a bunch of asshole racists".is a big part of the problem.
I don't know anyone who is ingrained in the 50's era. My parents weren't racist, neither were my aunts and uncles. I'm in my forties, and I don't know ANYONE who is racist. But you have your experiences, I guess.
People in their 20's  can be just as racist as anybody. Ask BLM.

Everyone has these preconceived notions - it doesn’t make you racist. And I’ll bet for every for every fault you find in someone’s culture, a decent person can find as many or more good things.

Depends how you define racism. In my opinion, racism means you feel certain people, by virtue of their race, are inferior to you (usually in a physical or genetic sense). With that comes a dislike of such people, and perhaps poor or unequal treatment of them. That would be racism.
But I also think racism can be something less extreme than that. Maybe believing people are culturally inferior makes one racist. Or then again, maybe that just makes us human, because we all judge other cultures (just look at the COVID thread and all the posts about what Chinese people eat).

I think the worst things for black people are the (1) preconceived notions many people have of them, and (2) the circumstances under which so many are raised. I am not sure either constitutes “racism.” In the case of the former, people need to be aware of their biases (which all people have, including blacks) and constantly try not to make assumptions. In the case of the latter, society must do a better job investing in poor communities. They need better schools, better jobs, better healthcare, etc.

That particular cop had other complaints filed against him. He had plenty of opportunities to allow George Floyd to get up and breathe. That cop looked desensitized which is very common in law enforcement. They see so much bad that they become a product of their environment. It would not surprise me if they were to determine that Derek Chauvin is clinically insane. He may plead insanity.

Here are my final thoughts on this before I either shut down this political forum for good or take another long extended break from it like I did 6 years ago. This forum has become toxic. It used to be fun. Now we've resorted to personal attacks, people getting banned & folks leaving. I'd love to just get back to arguing about baseball stuff. We at least didn't hate each other during those discussions & debates.
If you don't agree with me. That's fine, but I'm wasting my time here. I have better things to do than argue with folks who have pegged myself & others into a corner because of who we voted for, what we believe in or what we stand for.
There’s no middle ground allowed anymore. The media has seen to that. You either worship everything Trump does or he’s the scapegoat for every societal ill. You either support BLM or you’re a racist. You either recognize George Floyd as a martyr or you’re insensitive for pointing out his extensive rap sheet. I’m sure his previous victims are left scratching their heads right now. If you support protesters but call out the rioters and looters “you don’t get it” . If you discuss the innocent lives - both black and white lost in the craziness, you’re missing the point. Find the video of the sweet young lady whose sister was shot and killed by a protester. Bet you don’t see that on main stream media. . Democrats can be racist just listen to Biden and research his policies - but republicans are all racists. Personal responsibility has gone out the window. The accuser of the brethren is quick to call out and point fingers while we fail to keep our own hearts free of bitterness and self righteousness.
I believe Trump has enacted policies consistent with righteousness and freedom most of the time. I don’t like to listen to his speeches because he is often brash. I think racism is sin and it does still exist but I don’t believe blacks are constantly victimized by most whites. I believe there are bad cops, but I believe the vast majority are trying to do a very difficult job in a racially charged world. I believe we are spoon fed information and too lazy to do our own research or thinking. Emotionalism rules clear thought. A short, edited video seems to tell a complete story. Later we find out more info and then we have to backtrack, or ignore the truth. We want to hold everything but ourselves accountable for the outcome of a given situation. It’s not just the current situation dominating our newsfeeds that I’m referring to. It’s a new pattern developing in society.
I have locked this thread but if you wish to keep the .Spin forum open, send me a PM. Otherwise I have intentions to axe it real soon. AngelsWin.com used to be my escape & others to talk about Baseball and other off-topic events in the Hangout forum. When we did talk politics in the past, it was mostly fun banter. That ship has sailed.
I love y'all equally and would give the shirt off my back to anyone despite our differences but these conversations have become nasty and I'm afraid the great "Community" we once had will crumble to the ground if this continues.
    Have a great day.
