I wouldn’t give up on Placencia yet, nor Denzer Guzman, but Vera hasn’t shown anything to give me much hope. Bad average, lots of strikeouts, no pop, no speed.
Placencia though still drew a ton of walks, almost 90, against much older competition and a little bit of pop and speed.
Worth keeping in mind Tri-City is a horrible field for offense too, and that’s where both played a bulk of last year.
Hopefully one of these guys at least makes it to a decent UT IF guy, even if just depth.

    Detmers was a Billy pick.
I’ve made this same point in the minors thread before, about how I’m not totally crazy about Perry’s farm system yet. He’s done a very good job of drafting guys who can get to the bigs quickly and not look totally lost (compared to Thaiss, Ward, Adell initially) but yeah, we don’t know if these quick to bigs guys will be legit yet or not. I think the bigger issue with these guys isn’t necessarily their production, but their health, especially the arms. Not confident Joyce, Silseth or Bachman will remain healthy enough. I have some faith in Neto and Schanuel being at least solid MLB players though.
And it’s a strength IMO when compared to other parts of Perry’s portfolio. Not wild about his FA deals. His trades have been okay. Waiver claims non-existent. Top picks, good, rest of farm meh.

I like Braden Montgomery too, but sticking with Hagen Smith still. I know it’s an old bit at this point, but I’d deal Sandoval by no later than next deadline (get either a legit young bat in an one-for-one, a couple decent hitting prospects, or if he’s really rocking, a couple good hitting prospects and a young high-risk/reward pitching prospect) and aim for Hagen replacing him. Pitching is just such a premium.
Maybe a rotation including Detmers, Dana, Smith, Kent by 2026? Paired with a Rada, Trout, Schanuel, Neto, O’Hoppe offense? Maybe one of DeJesus or Scull in outfield, Placencia or Guzman in infield?

Well he was stretched out beyond that, so he didn’t completely empty the tank, and I doubt he’ll be with the team cross-country tomorrow….perhaps they’re looking ahead to Cincy and having him meet there, with Strickland, Fulmer, or Suarez cut around then. By that point he should be refreshed to replace them on the roster and provide 50+ pitches in a game if need be.

Probably more that they need a guy who can go multiple innings with Fulmer probably taxed now, and Suarez not really showing signs of life.

Astros down to 6-13 with the worst ERA in the AL. I know it’s real early still and they have guys retuning but…oof.
I was advocating for the Angels to take the winter off and just develop the kids in 2024, thinking the division would be just way too tough between Texas, Seattle and Houston, but starting to look like the Angels could legitimately re-position themselves to be a true AL West threat for the next few years already within the next year if they have a strong draft, internal development and the other teams keep looking this vulnerable.

Eh sucks that we lost but we’re still around first and .500 in a year we shouldn’t be, in the midst of a really rough schedule month. And there were a lot of positives today with Soriano, O’Hoppe and Moniak homering, and the guys at least hanging in there. Should have won the game, but they still had some wins in there. Fulmer got the loss, yeah, but between last outing and the start of this one, he looks like he could be handy to have if they don’t DFA him tomorrow for a fresh arm.
Seeing Soriano potentially become a starter and O’Hoppe continuing to prove he could be a legit star on both sides of the plate matters a lot more than one win to me this year.

Absolutely, but only two of those guys were taken outside of the top 5 picks in the draft, and they had an amazing 27 picks taken among the top 100 picks in their drafts from 2011-2018.  The Angels had 14 and none higher than 10th overall by comparison, so it' s hard to give them too much credit considering Houston was picking in the Goldilocks zone (top 5), and still missed a ton.  Where Houston has been really amazing is finding pitching talent in Latin America.  We likely never see the sort of turnarounds Houston and B-more enjoyed now that they made tanking to "win" harder.
Looking forward to seeing what the Angels do with their top 4 picks this year.  Wish it was a deeper draft.

Pretty happy with it so far. Hasn’t translated to HRs yet but he’s hitting the bar insanely hard (maybe best in baseball?) and not chasing. Defense has been fine. Drawing walks.

Sigh. Mentioned earlier in the winter months he reminded me too much of Matt Wisler or Oliver Drake. Rays found them on scrap heap, made them unreal, and then let them go only to see them disappear to the IL and seemingly out of baseball.
Only “bright side” is I guess we get a free year of control on him if he has elbow surgery.

I know it’s way, way too early for this but looking at guys we lost last year…
Coleman Crow: traded from NYM to MIL, placed on 60-day IL Landon Marceaux: NYM, placed on full-season IL Jeremiah Jackson: NYM, 0-14 to start year Connor Van Scoyoc: COL, yet to play in ‘24 Mason Albright: COL, 81.00 ERA in 0.2 IP Jake Madden: COL, maybe converted to RP? 2 G, 2.2 IP, 3.38 ERA Ky Bush: CWS, 5 IP, 7 K, 1.80 ERA 1 GS Edgar Quero: COL, 3 HR, .250/.292/.700/.992 in 20 AB As bad as it stung at the time to lose this many players…so far most haven’t shown much last year or this year. If Juan Flores and Dario Laverde keep at it, losing Quero won’t really matter, especially if O’Hoppe winds up as good as he looks. Quero would have been wasted as a back-up catcher. Would’ve been nicer to have something other than a few bad Giolito starts to show, but, not end of the world. None of the pitchers have really looked like a huge loss. Crow was a big loss but the injury concerns are mounting, I liked Madden but if the Rockies are moving him to relief not a massive loss, and it’s too early to tell for Albright. Bush has been mixed between ST and all of his season last year.

I’m not gonna buy into the Teodosio hype yet - still no walks and a lot of strikeouts - but he’s definitely setting himself up to be a good 4th/5th OF depth chart guy, and with the way our farm has been, even producing league average role-player depth on the margins is a big win, so I’m hoping that is what’s happening. Has to be making Jordyn Adams sweat a bit.
