As i said at the time. If you were not all in for extending Ohtani then you damn well should trade him.
I’m not sure Ohtani was ever seriously interested in staying either…

Reminds me of the season we signed Bobby Abreu. At some point just get the player with good value.
8 minutes ago, T.G. said:I don't think we talk enough about how good a signing Abreu was for the Angels.
I don't think it will happen with Montgomery but Martinez' value might drop to the point that, even if we prefer to rotate Trout, Rendon and others through the DH spot, you just can't not sign him.

Maybe that means they are out on Montgomery now?
You would think so. Saw a report that the Yankees are back in on Montgomery. The repercussions of Cole being out may be sinking in.

Signing Ohtani was probably never a good baseball decision for the Angels. Not trading him wasnt either.
That has always seemed pretty obvious….yet Arte screwed it up…

You are mixing up different things. If Montgomery had a draft pick loss attached to him NOW (he already doesn’t) then a team could get around that by waiting to sign until the draft.
If Montgomery waits to sign until after the season opens, he will also again not have a draft pick loss attached to him NEXT year in his NEXT free agency.
At least that’s how I understand it.
Maybe I confused you. Sorry about that. I think we’re saying the same thing. 1) He has no draft pick attached now. 2) If he waits to sign until next week, there will be no draft pick attached after 2024, if he is a FA again. At least that is how I read the article.

I know this has been discussed but I guess it flew over my head. Looks like Montgomery will wait until the season starts to sign, which would avoid a Qualifying Offer (again) after this season. Old rule used to be you had to wait until after the draft:

I think the Mets and Marlins also interested in JD.
38 minutes ago, ThisismineScios said:Fair point, but I think JD sees the most opportunity here and it's a near perfect fit because we don't have a slugger to fill that role. Makes sense to everyone, and I hope Arte approves.
Mets don't seem inclined to sign him. I don't think we will either. Having said that, Martinez, Montgomery, Lorenzen and Clevenger have to find a home soon, don't they?

Ok maybe back to Texas? St. Louis maybe?
One of those two or Boston for Montgomery. Just not sure anybody else is going to jump in and blow up the market at this point, particularly if he really wants to go where he has a comfort level or family ties (Boston). Short term deal like Chapman and Snell.

Again, it's Bowden, so we should probably expect the Astros to announce the signing of Montgomery within the next couple hours or so.
I know he is full of it at times but he does talk to front office folks. He is less about throwing bad info out there than just being a windbag...On MLB Radio, I like Jim Duquette better but together, on Sunday mornings, they are the best show on the channel. Steve Phillips doesn't bring much to the table and a lot of the former players are pretty worthless. At least Duquette and Bowden talk to front office people who actually make decisions.

Snell is a bit of an outlier. His career has been marked by injuries and performances that could be viewed as below his talent level. If he manages to post back to back 180IP, sub 3.00 ERA seasons he might actually see his profile rise significantly. Look at how Carlos Rodon was able to turn his checkered past into a huge payday. He was coming off his age 29 season while Snell would be coming off his age 31 season but the dude had nowhere near the track record Snell does.
If he has another meh season then you're probably right.
That is the question. If he didn't cash in this offseason and is so-so this season, he's going to be living on short term deals....and probably not close to 30 million per. He may even decline the opt out if he is so-so this year.

It's not really. It's the total money. The likelihood a 33 year old Snell will get another $150-190M in free agency in two years is almost zero. Now was his time (last time) to cash in.
If the report was accurate, the Yankees offered Snell 6/150 in January.....what are the odds that Blake Snell makes 150 million before he retires? If the report was accurate, the Blue Jays offered Chapman 6/120 last year. Same question. Not Boras' best work for sure. He doesn't always read the market correctly.

I would prefer him to Snell but unless he changes his mind on location that isn’t happening.
If he loosens up on location and lowers his contract demands, I’m not sure we’d be very high on his list. Without draft pick compensation and with a more reasonable contract structure, he’ll get a lot of interest.

Agreed. If they have a strategy, it makes little sense. I guess, "trade all the relievers we signed at the deadline if we're out of it" could be considered a strategy, so maybe there's that? Lol.

I think Rosenthal, Chuck and others had it right….we were never very serious about Snell…..Ever…..

I am also pessimistic about the offense. Last year with Ohtani they were a top 5 AL offense before the ASB, bottom 5 after. You lose Ohtani and you don't add a single hitter to the lineup? Not any single one of significance. And the rotation, which was not good, didn't have any additions either. Just not sure why we couldn't go after a $5-8 million dollar player to play OF or 2B. Maybe they really, really, really like Drury and Rengifo. And no DH? I think without Ohtani, they are at best a middle of the road offense, especially without a single addition.
I haven’t been in favor but signing Martinez would help some…and he would be relatively cheap, compared to Snell…and, if he hits well, give you a chip at the Trade Deadline.

I am surprised Moreno hasn’t signed Martinez, being someone who loves the long ball.
I'm not sure how things will end but Martinez is the only one of the remaining 3 that I could see us signing. Listening to Jim Duquette and Jeff Joyce on MLB Radio this morning, they didn't even mention us with Snell (Giants got the most discussion). But, I'm not sure I'd be surprised at anything that happens with Snell or Montgomery at this point.

A lot of Astros bloggers are saying snell talk has died down due to him asking too much.
At this rate, nobody is going to be getting him for any more than 5 months.

San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros Continue to Be Linked to Top Free Agent Starter After Attending Sim Game
The San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros attended free agent Blake Snell's simulated game in Seattle on Friday as the two teams continue to be linked to him with less than two weeks to go until Opening Day.

So the Angels are no longer in the conversation.
Which is fine because it seems like a bad idea anyway.
That would tend to make you think that Rosenthal got things right.

Back and forth could be Boras suggesting different offers, Perry taking them back to ownership, and getting a no.
It could. Again, depends on how you spin it. I’d like to believe it means some substantive discussions with Arte doing more than saying no. If I’m guessing, I think Rosenthal probably got it right. Olney wasn’t necessarily inaccurate but maybe painted too optimistic a picture. Olney did say he thought Snell, in the end, would sign with the Angels.
-
10 minutes ago, BTH said:
Olney’s report was that Snell preferred to go the Angels and there had back and forth between them and the team.
Rosenthal’s report was that Minasian has been pushing Arte to sign him, but Arte has resisted.
Where’s the contradiction? The way I see it, Snell wants the Angels, Perry wants Snell, and Arte doesn’t.
I said it depended on how you interpreted Olney’s report. “Back and forth” doesn’t sound like Arte continually saying no. Rosenthal’s report doesn’t sound like any real engagement. Back and forth does. But again, that may be my rose colored glasses.
-
4 minutes ago, BTH said:
If you believe Rosenthal’s report about the Astros is true, why wouldn’t you believe his report about the Angels is true?
Rosenthal’s report about the Angels seemingly contradicts Olney’s report from earlier in the week…but I guess it depends on how you interpret Olney’s report.

Yet you wrote hours ago that you thought Boras fed Rosenthal a lie about Arte not wanting to spend on Snell.

Spending your entire budget on the bullpen seems rather nonsensical to me.
