Minasian has been particularly bad at building a bullpen the last 3+ years.  26th in WAR and 24th in WPA during that time.   Some of this has to do with the utter wasteland of arms that have come from the farm the last few years and why you'd draft all pitchers.  But even still, he hasn't really gotten much from that so far.

Getting Iglesias from the Reds his first offseason in a salary dump (traded Noe Ramirez) was a solid deal.  But we then salary dumped him to the Braves, unfortunately, where he is still pretty good.

There was a reason we signed him fairly quickly. He (wisely) jumped on an offer that appeared to be out of line with his track record.

My mistake....it seemed earlier, weird off season. The deal did seem like a reach, regardless of the injury. We'll see if he recovers and produces.

This signing will forever baffle me. That $11 mill could have been used in so many different ways. Im assuming he’ll need TJ and won’t pitch for another year +… so we’ll still have what another 1.5 years left of control when he comes back? For a 11mill a year reliever with only a 4 month good track record. Yikes

They lose nothing by sending him down to get his timing down.  While his OBP has a lot of value it's hard to argue he's their best option at 1B right now.  Mostly because it means they are playing Drury over Rengifo.

^^^ This. And it is no knock on Schanuel’s long term prospects. I think some AAA time would be beneficial. Drury, Sano at 1b, Rengifo at 2b.

Only thing I can think of is that Plesac pitched more recently than Fulmer, so maybe they just wanted the guy who'd be available immediately?  And I'm guessing they're assuming Plesac will pass through waivers, since they gave him that $1M guaranteed contract.

And maybe they’ve seen enough of Plesac that they’re not concerned if someone claims him.

After getting busted in 2010 (we can debate the legitimacy of it), they basically shutdown all Latin scouting. Considering how many players in the Majors come feom Latin America, that was beyond a bad decision.

I think it had more to do with this decade of bad baseball than anything else. Bad FA signings hurt but not having depth in your organization is suicidal. Not sure who made the decision, Reagins or Arte, but it was devastating.

If the answer to the Trout question is no, then it doesn’t matter what you add in free agency. If this rotation isn’t strong enough to get them to the deadline then I doubt adding one guy like Snell would have made much of a difference.
This team needs two things, one, health, two, internal growth. Without those two things free agency doesn’t really matter.
When Eppler traded for Upton he said in the moment that the team played well enough that it deserved to be upgraded (or something to that affect). This team needs to play well enough to deserve the same thing. If not then trade Drury and all the pen arms at the deadline.
I wanted a starter added, but I’m not going to pretend it’ll make a difference without health or Development.

Fair points and well thought out....but it was frustrating to see the market flatten out late and not take advantage of it, with lots of money to spend under the luxury tax.  On the other hand, not sure what might have been a good fit.  Snell was short term deal and would have cost a draft pick, Montgomery was short term and may not have wanted to play for the Angels.  Martinez was a short term deal and maybe not a great fit.  And, as you say, short term deals probably didn't fit where we are.  Still frustrating though, particularly after so many bad FA signings to have seen the opportunity pass us by.

…I don't doubt they were hoping someone might fall to them, but can't say I'm surprised this may be it.

Not sure Martinez, Snell, Lorenzen could have fallen much further, although the draft pick was a problem with Snell. Hell, Lorenzen, who put up good numbers as a starter before he ran out gas, cost the same as García, a dime a dozen pen guy. Much less than Stephenson or Moore. I don’t think they were waiting on anybody to fall to them after the early pen signings.
