I know people have info to the contrary and we'll probably sign him right as I post this but I just don't see us getting Snell.
I don’t either. I think we are a safe landing spot, meaning Olney’s info is probably accurate…but, at the end of the day, I don’t think it’s us unless he just doesn’t have other legit options…

As of now, no team in baseball has signed Snell.
And we are preemptively concluding that Arte Moreno has “botched” this situation.
OK.
Fair point....Snell not signing has everything to do with Boras holding out for his price. But it isn't necessarily a mutually exclusive situation. There is history with Arte that gives everyone reason to pause. But, until we see how this finally ends, I'm not passing judgment on Arte. He gets a pass at this point and if someone else signs Snell, it may be a deal that doesn't make sense for the Angels. We'll see.

No way. You don’t give him an opt out after year one if it cost you a pick.
Particularly if he won't be ready to start the season...

I very much doubt Adell and Moniak would be regularly used as DH. One will be a starter and the other will be the 4th OF. You also have Hicks, so something already has to give.
Martinez doesn’t really change that.
I haven't been big on Martinez but, if it's a one year deal, that might be different. I've liked the idea of leaving the DH spot open but if you could get a proven middle of the order bat for a year, and we sign Snell, things get interesting. What was going to be a "developmental year" becomes somewhat intriguing.

If JD is signed it takes away at bats from Adell and Moniak so it does interrupt seeing what young players can do. I'm against signing JD, Snell is OK because depth at starters is so thin.
JD Davis would be cheaper and wouldn't necessarily take AB's away from Adell and Moniak.

Does anyone else feel like it's another take it or leave it offer to Boras from Arte like he did with Adrian Beltre, that he won't budge on the money/years/opt outs and that's why nothing has been done, and I believe nothing will be done here.
All Arte had to do is match another year with Beltre and the Hall of Famer would have been ours. Just feels like he's going to F up this one with all three of these FA's still on the market (Snell, Monty and JD).
I've been in the "sit tight and let the young guys develop" mode this offseason but I've changed my thinking. If Snell and JD Martinez can be had on manageable deals, considerably less than they wanted at the beginning of the offseason, then I'm in for it. It doesn't necessarily make us serious playoff contenders but it takes you from "no chance" to at least "maybe on the periphery of the wild card". But, like you, I fully expect Arte to mess it up. His timing is maddening. He'll spend foolishly (Rendon, Pujols, Hamilton) and then refuse to spend when it seemingly does make sense (now).

Don't think that was Passan. Hoonstra and Moroni were the dupes behind that train wreck.
I was thinking of Morosi, who I also like….he really messed up….

I wasn't picking at you -- I was saying that guy is just repeating other people -- no original thoughts.. The internet is 98% fluff.
No offense taken…I like Olney and I put some stock in what he said although he did qualify it…Rosenthal is ok I guess. I like Jeff Passan though he really messed up with the Ohtani to Toronto story. Heyman I take with a grain of salt.

He's a guy that read what Onley said and ran with it.
Yeah...should have read the article before I posted. Just references Olney and Heyman...Nothing beyond that....

Get JD Davis for fuck's sake. There has never been a more obvious player to sign.
Which means we won't even contact him.
He would be a good get but you have to think he’s looking for a place with more likely playing time….with the Angels, it depends on whether Rendon is healthy (yeah, I know) and whether Schanuel settles in as an everyday player.

Not only that, here we are in Spring Training and pitchers are dropping like flies. This means more suitors are being created for his clients. Why? Because pitchers get hurt ALL THE TIME….I know you may not want to hear this, but Scott Boras is smart. I think he may be playing it just right.
Fair point. But I would qualify it with this: I’m not sure teams are going to pay the steep asking price for Snell or Montgomery even with an injury. Clevenger or Lorenzen might be more likely to benefit.

I think he did with Bellinger.

I hope Silseth is in rotation to start the season. I think he has earned the opportunity. If they sign Snell he would not be ready till after mid-April. Maybe a trade of Sandoval or try and unload Anderson could happen. Many decisions coming for final 8 in BP before season starts.
Snell (and Boras) are creating a problem for whoever is left in the bidding. If you sign him to a deal with an opt out after one year, it's starting to look like you won't get a full 6 months for the one year you get guaranteed. 5 months? 5 1/2 months? Dunno....but if you're the Angels, who aren't, on paper at least, a playoff caliber team, do you want less than a full year of Snell with the loss of a draft pick? You would think Perry wants a multi-year deal with no opt outs.

He would just be a utility player. Angels have a 3B and 1B plus 5 OF. I pass on Davis and if he so good why could Giants not trade him?
Salary is high, particularly this late, when most teams have their budgets locked in.

But the team that signed him, after being horrible, didn’t do their due diligence when signing him. Can you at least see how I am struggling with that premise?
Sure....but I don't think Jim Bowden is a liar...I don't always agree with him but I don't think he is a liar...There could be reasons they didn't get an MRI....there are other medical records you look at besides an MRI....I just had a CT Scan and there were decisions the Doctor made there. How long since the last one, CT v MRI...I'm not a Doctor....Hell, the Red Sox are cheap, maybe they didn't want to spend a few thousand dollars.

No. He said he didn't think the Red Sox had Giolito go through an MRI.
That is exactly what he said.

Just now, Stradling said:
Ok. So Bowden said teams don’t do MRI? If so that is patently false. If teams don’t tell me how the Brewers and Dodgers caught those injury concerns? Of course teams do MRIs.
He didn't say that. He said "in this case". And no, I don't think he is lying. So, I accept the "common sense" argument of a message board poster over a former GM who had talked to people about this case? Um, no....
-
10 minutes ago, Stradling said:
Sorry but a team isn’t giving someone $35 million without doing a full on medical. An MRI is part of that physical process.
Sorry....you aren't going to convince me that you know the process better than Bowden. Or that you have talked to anybody who might know what the Red Sox did or didn't do.

This morning on MLB Network radio - Jim Bowden said he thinks Giolito was hurt last year. His 7+ ERA over his last 12 starts was a warning sign and he doesn't think the Red Sox did an MRI as part of Giolito's physical.
I heard that too....Bowden can be full of it at times but I suspect he knows what he is talking about here. Moreso than fans on a message board, anyway....

Seems like the Halos will rotate Rendon, Trout, Hicks, Drury, and Rengifo in the DH spot and forgo adding a DH?
6th INF spot likely comes down to either Adrianza or Stefanic.
I would bet on Adrianza because you need somebody who can play SS.....I know Neto is going to play everyday if healthy but Adrianza at least gives you an option there. Plus, I don't think Stefanic has played yet?

Not sure that has any appeal to the Angels. I guess with an opt out deal, if he tanks, he doesn’t opt out and we keep him but that’s not good…if a pure one year deal is all he and Boras are willing to do, I don’t see why we’d agree to that. You still lose the draft pick.
