    Last decade, not much.
After Arte prioritized the glamor FA signings to generate more revenue from TV contracts and seemingly deprioritized scouting/player development (example: firing of Eddie Bane after a great draft class), it seems the slim pickings in the last decade may be the result of that deprioritization.  Prior to that, some come to mind such as F-Rod, Aybar, Santana, etc.
Agree that a low % of scouted players pan out, but that would generally be true for both domestic and international players.  I would prefer the Angels do all they can (more, not less) to scout both domestic AND international players to increase the stable of young players so maybe a few more young players pan out (including having more young players that other teams may want in trade, such as how the Dodgers got Mookie Betts).
The Angels, like the Dodgers, are in a large market and should have as much or more revenue to plow back into budget for scouting & player development than other teams like Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and most other teams.
Instead of doing only one or the other (build via FA or build via scouting & player development), can't the Angels do both?  The Dodgers seem like they do both.
Although the Angels have some good young players (O'Hoppe recently obtained via trade, Silseth, Neto, Schanuel obtained via draft), I am hoping more can be done to look everywhere to obtain young players (and then develop them) to strengthen the organization's foundation of having a few good young players pan out to fill holes due to injury or to maybe trade sometimes for quality established players.

He was one of those guys I wanted no part of and the Angels signed but to be fair, he really only needs to get his ERA down to around 4.50 to not be a total loss. He was crap last season but he's been around that figure a lot and if they can keep their best defense on the field he could get there again.

Seeing a lot of predictions for Rookie of the Year, and not a single one picks Nolan Schanuel. And I think that tells you everything you need to know.
They'll pick teenagers who aren't fully developed, or athletes with severe platoon splits and declare them the odds on favorite to win ROY.
Nevermind Schanuel who basically went straight from college to the pros and posted an OBP North of .400, which I don't think had ever been done. They'll make excuses for the blue chippers struggling in AA because they're "exhausted" yet Schanuel in his "exhaustion" looked like an MLB veteran at age 21.
I'm not saying I'd bet against Jackson Holliday, he's incredible. I'm saying to not even bring up Schanuel in the conversation is BS. Furthermore, the kid still isn't getting love on top prospect lists.  #97 on MLB.com. How many of the guys ahead of him won't even be major leaguers? Yet here they have a kid, guaranteed top of the order big leaguer and they'll put 96 kids ahead of him. And oddly enough, this may impact the Angels because in order to get a draft pick for him winning ROY, he needs to appear on at least two lists.

I highly doubt Daniel starts the year in the rotation ahead of those five, barring injury. Right now--assuming no further signings--I'd guess the Opening Day rotation is Detmers, Sandoval, Anderson, Canning, Silseth, with Daniel the 6th starter and Bachman on course to be stretched out (gross).

Not really, since the bad farm system is why they haven’t finished over .500

Agree 100%. I would rather look at 2024 as a developmental year instead of pretending that Snell and Bellinger make us a WC contender.

Peak level Bengie was like a .280/.315/.440 hitter,so when you consider the difference in eras, that might translate to .265/.305/.425 today.  Mejia is likely capable of those numbers but the defense isnt close to comparable.  The other difference is K rate.  Bengie Molina was allergic to striking out.

Since you edited this a bit.  Throwing guys out might be similar but Bengie was better, significantly so in every other defensive area.

JVel17 got a reaction from Angel Oracle in Angels farm system (player development) still trending upwards?
Last year our favorite OC Register reporter, Jeff Fletcher, wrote a 3 part article about Angels "Farm Failures" in which the 3rd part noted the player development system was trending upwards.
Some examples were not only related to drafting, but a change in some player development philosophies, emphasis on a more balanced approach to modern technologies (rather than an over emphasis under Eppler), increased pay to their minor league coaches, etc.
As it is now a year later, is there any feedback on whether the "trending upwards" is continuing?
    Any specific positives?
    Any specific concerns?
    Thanks.

Received a reply message from Jeff Fletcher.  Jeff is not aware of any changes (since part III of last year's OC Register article) as pertaining to Angels' priorities relating to player development.
This seems like good news as there were positive developments that Jeff reported a year ago about the organization's priorities related to player development.

Thank you Redondo.  The thread you noted has much good information about farm related topics.  I will review to see if the thread may have info that relates to my questions about current/ongoing organizational "priorities" relating to player development (information that may not be readily available).

If this was already shared previously, sorry.
Regardless of what I think about Arte, I think we should give Perry the benefit of the doubt and a little more patience before giving up on him.  Minasian inherited quite a large mess.

JVel17 reacted to Jeff Fletcher in Angels suffer more injuries.
First, “they” do a deep dive on every injury to try to find out why it happened and if it’s preventable. “They” just don’t tell us what they found.
if you look in the Angels media guide at all the strength and conditioning and medical people, they keep cycling through new ones every 2-3 years, not to mention there being a new GM every 5 years.

I have been working on a story for a little while and it’s really really hard because “injury” is such a vague term. A guy getting hit in the face by a pitch is very different than a stiff back which is very different than a torn UCL which is very different than a strained groin.

You can’t even really talk about them together because the causes are so different. That’s why this story may go nowhere.

I will tell you that so far I’ve looked at 20-23 and tried to isolate only the muscular injuries (oblique, hamstring, groin, etc) and I found the Angels are near the top this year, but in the last 3 they were basically right in the middle.

And then I talked to someone who told me I can’t even classify obliques the same as hamstrings so now I think maybe all my data is worthless.

Also, sometimes the reported injury is bogus in the first place. And sometimes guy are hurt and don’t even go on the IL, as we’ve seen.

but my best guess is most of the problem comes back to my favoeite topic: the farm system. If you’re not getting young players to the big leagues, you’re relying on old ones. And they get hurt more.
  20. Thank You

Yeah it's dumb. But I think it's been well documented now that Ohtani wears the pants in this organization. What he says goes!
For any other player they would have been put on the IL right away after that awkward swing and pain that ensued.

    MAKE IT 5 STRAIGHT W'S!!!
9 games (SINGLE DIGITS!!!!) under .500; 14 GB HOU in the ALW, 12 behind TEX in WC with 17 games to play; elimination number still 4 games in the ALW and 7 in the WC.
Keep Mr. Sandoval focused, Mr. O'Hoppe.

This is probably the only time in my life that I’ll agree with Curt Schilling.

By the way, I think …
“Team X is open to trading Player Y if he asks to be traded” has always been a true statement at all times.

If a guy doesn’t want to be there, you don’t want him there. And if it happens to be a guy who is more tradeable, then it just means you get more for him. In this case, I don’t believe Trout wants to be traded and I don’t believe the Angels could make a trade that would help them, so it’s a non-story.
