Yeah, that's what I don't get.  I'm guessing on some level, it's an indication that they really do think Walsh will be back soon--but even so, you're at the very least playing the next 4 or 5 games with only one player who has played 1B for any length of time (Stassi and Suzuki have both played a few innings at 1B at various times in their careers, but I don't really think they're options unless it's an extreme emergency).  Such a bizarre year from a roster management standpoint...

It's a head scratcher. The only thing I can think of is that they want Thaiss to continue to get starts at catcher.

They didn’t trade Kole, but that year only one RFer was traded and that was Castellanos and he was having a great year and I think the Angels weren’t positive whether or not they wanted to bring Kole back.  Ultimately they decided to let him walk instead of giving him pretty good money for a decent but not spectacular player.  They declined his $14 million deal for last year.

Yeah, I think keeping Calhoun and then not opting in on his $14M extension was the right thing to do.

And maybe keeping Raisel is also. We don't know the return Minasian was offered or what Arte demanded. It was reported that Arte had to approve any deal for Iglesias.

It’s ridiculous to make those claims when you’re not privy to any of these discussions. Minasian has shown that the Angels have no problem trading assets for prospects (Watson and Heaney)—so why would Iglesias or Cobb be any different?

True. None of us know what Arte and Perry discussed and what direction Arte gave Perry. But, as the guys who get paid to do this said, trading Iglesias would have signaled giving up on the season.

This is only my opinion but I think Arte's ego is hurting this franchise. But what are you going to do, you can't trade the owner.

    Can you?

Agreed. Though, I hope the Angels kept their impending FAs to re-sign them instead of making a push to the playoffs (or both). It would suck if they failed trying to offload guys they don’t intend on keeping after this season

All signs are pointing to the Angels re-signing the Iglessiases and Cobb, though.

    I hope they re-sign Cobb.

I think Iglesias and Cobb were not traded because there was not a market for Minasian to get MLB ready payers in exchange that would allow Arte to save face on this season.

This was all about Arte I think.

His intellectual and emotional makeup does not allow him to accept failure. And a rebuild of any sort is accepting failure. So we continue to be stuck in the middle.

    Thanks Arte!!

Enough.   Logically your arguments are making head spin.  Believe what you want.

I am tired of "it rarely happens so there must be a disadvantage " bullshit you are throwing me.

I gave you three variables that explain why it doesnt.   Stick them up your $$$

Slow your roll kid. Maybe take a nap.

Look if no deal is made, I will say I am wrong.  But they are in the heat of negotiation.  Isn’t it almost predictable that the Mets would float out a story that they are OK not signing him at this point?

I think the negotiations are over as of yesterday or maybe today. Either way, what a mess for the Mets.

The article I read said many high level picks refuse the MRI.  FWIW.

Yep. And I read Boras does this with all his high level guys. He does his own independent MRI's and medicals. He shares any negative results with the teams. Some of us should slow our roll here...

Get a damn bullpen!  Spend if necessary but get a bullpen. Lockdown bullpen this year and we have would be in a dig fight for the WC.

I think we can have a very good bull pen without the $14-$15 M it would take to re-sign Iglesias. We have a ton of talent in the system now and could also add some arms using the money we are not giving to Iglesias.

If Minasian is smart, and I think he is, he will not re-sign Iglesias.

Zeba Savala of the White Sox entered today with three hits in his career in 26 plate appearances.   Two doubles.

He hit his first home run today.  Then, his second (a grand slam).  Then, his third.  There was another hit in there.   Baseball is silly sometimes.   And/or great.  A night he and everyone he knows will never forget.

Hopefully, he didn't/doesn't piss off old man LaRussa.

Very cool! I checked out his BR page. He's an Aztec from SDSU. What a great game he has to remember. Maybe it becomes a catalyst for him sticking with the team.

  10. Minasian should plug Sam Bachman into the closer role next year for $570K instead of the $14M it would cost to re-sign Iglesias. And then stretch him out to be a starter in 2023. This gives us more financial flexibility to sign or trade for a TOR starting pitcher.

SP's - Ohtani, (TOR addition - Gausman, Stroman, Ray, etc.), Sandoval, Detmers, Barria, (Suarez/Canning).

BP - Bachman, Chris Rodriguez, Mayers, Yan, Wantz, Warren, Junk, Selman - internally and/or bring in other key guys.

    Lineup - (1) Fletcher, (2) Trout, (3) Ohtani, (4) Rendon, (5) Walsh, (6) Upton, (7) Marsh, (8) Stassi, (9) Iglesias

    October baseball in 2022!!
