Yeah I’m watching a game with Ohtani, Fletcher and a bunch of AAAA players and our starter throwing a gem. Somehow we’re winning. Now imagine this team with our full lineup and a good bullpen…
Try to enjoy the positives in life. The bullpen was not in play when you went negative but Barria was pitching a one hitter.
And by the way, the bullpen pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings for the win today!
-
Barria pitched really well but the third time through the order has always been the concern for him. 3 of his 4 hits were given up 3rd time through the order and some of the outs were hit pretty well. No strikeouts third time through the order.
Hopefully Cishek will come in and get the third out.

If Perry fixes up the bullpen this offseason, this team could be really scary.
Are we watching the same game this afternoon?

That was only the second run in last 45 innings versus the A's

Right and quite frankly I can’t think of any utility guys that were moved either at the deadline. Baseball has been bastardized to a point where post season rosters aren’t built like they once were. Those utility guys or upgrade at back up catcher or a guy that could lay down a bunt or steal you a bag as a pinch runner just aren’t around anymore. How did we even have those guys on a team? Oh I know how, they didn’t have a 25 man roster with 14 pitchers. I am going to sound old but I miss 5 starters and 6 relievers. This year we had so many pitchers we only had one actual outfielder, who was our 4th outfielder. And yes I know that isn’t the reason we only had one outfielder.
It's a good point but the rosters are 26 and 13 not 25 and 14. We usually carry 14 because of Ohtani but have 13 right now because of adding Thaiss as a 3rd catcher.
The roster construction has definitely changed over the years as the way pitchers are used has evolved. I'd like to see MLB rosters go to 27

who cares about that? seriously. they missed a chance to improve today for almost no reason not to. this team will never get better if they can make the right decisions that might hurt people's feelings in the short term or are geared toward unrealistic short term goals.
It's Arte Doc. He is who he is.

So I see you were talking about Raisel. What you don't realize or want to accept is that we have an owner who doesn't want to be a loser, no matter how much he interferes in baseball operations. You have a perfectly acceptable right to believe we should be sellers, but that directly conflicts with what Moreno wants which is to win, even if the odds are not in our favor. I am fine if we do or do not extend Raisel, there are always options to build a bullpen out of, so Minasian can literally go out on the market and steal away another good reliever from another team, rather than re-signing Iglesias (Raisel) at what will likely be a $15M/year type of deal. Maybe they do, maybe they don't, there are always options.
This point is missed by many. Arte is not intellectually or emotionally well suited to do what the Cubs and Nats did this month. It's his team. What are you going to do...

Yea, but you will have to pay $19 million for the closer and still find 5 more guys.
I agree. I don't think Minasian gives Iglesias a QO. Maybe he tries to sign him to a 2 year deal.
-
This has been our curse the past few years with Trout, add in 2021 with Ohtani and this is what we get. We're not good enough to buy because we're on the fringes of competitiveness and still building our farm and we're not bad enough to sell and totally rebuild. We're stuck in the middle...

I think if we had just DFA'd Heaney and promoted Detmers we are instantly a better team.
So getting a AA pitcher, Junk, with a 1.78 ERA and a .959 WHIP and a AA reliever, Peguero, with a 1.50 ERA, a .917 WHIP and a 12.9 SO9 is all bonus. Maybe these two guys add value to the the Angels in '22.

Never mind Barria, no rotation spot for you. We'll promote Detmers instead.
I really feel bad for the guy. But at this point it's just hilarious. I've never seen a team want someone they have less, without cutting him.
What?? Barria is in the six man rotation.

Guys traded and soon to be traded.
Did we trade anyone? I've been in meetings.

We will absolutely hear how other teams got more than we got for similar guys.
Which guys would those be?

you can't complain about how lousy our players are, and then simultaneously complain about how our GM isn't trading any of them.
no one wants our players.
inspite of this, you know he's been on the phone as much as anyone else in the last 48 hours.
I think those two are tied together. They are SO lousy they are not wanted or need others to come off the board before they are a viable option.
People think Ward and Heaney have value for a contender. SMH.
Iglesias and Cobb are in line behind others even if Minasian wants to deal them.

going forward I would take Sandoval and his 5 years of control over Berrios and his 1 year.
I agree with this part. I think/hope Sandoval and Detmers are a non-starter for Minasian today.

Ok time to trade Sandoval if these are the returns starting pitchers are getting teams.
You're being sarcastic, right?

Pretty sure the chances of the Angels trading Reid Detmers today are less than zero.

Ok. Regardless there is no reason to send valuable prospects for one year of a good but not great starting pitcher. Spend more to get someone better for longer.
I mean sure, if it is the same prospects, Alcantara is a better choice because of years of control. But I think we would need to offer more for Alcantara than Berrios.
I really don't think we should go after either one today. It feels like a sellers market with those two guys and one of the teams who has a real chance to contend will over pay today. Hearing a lot of noise about the Padres on MLB Network.

Glad somebody got it right.....Haven't seen Iglesias' name mentioned much by any of the talking heads....he is a very good option for a contender, if we're selling....
If he goes today I am thinking it will be right after Kimbrel.

For Berrios, yes. For Alcantara no.
What is the concern with Alcantara? He has three years of control and Berrios has one.

Gray is going to be a free agent and I think he would be a valuable piece for contending teams. 126 ERA+

Schwarber to first now for them but Ward could have played some first vs. Lefties.
Nope.
Again.
Schwarber has played one game at 1B for zero innings his entire career. Taylor Ward has played two games at 1B for two innings.
Schwarber will be in the OF for the Red Sox and it further exemplifies the lack of value Taylor Ward has to a team competing for a championship. Schwarber adds value to the Red Sox outfield. Ward has none.
Gameday Thread: A's @ Angels (7/31/21 - 1pm): Barria on the mound, Thaiss at 1B, no Upton
