Moustakas' OPS+ with the Angels is 74--which is the same as Chad Wallach's this year.  I know folks on here like him, but I'll say it again: a one-year deal for like $3M, tops, or just move on.

There’s no doubt it would’ve helped, but would it have been enough to overcome a bottom 10 pitching staff?

Cool, so they might have finished 3 games or so above .500, best-case scenario?  I think people sometimes lose sight of just how awful the pitching has been--and it really hasn't been due to injuries.  They've given up the fourth-most runs in the AL.

I don’t understand this notion from people.
Even if everyone on the team was fully healthy, was this pitching staff good enough for a playoff team?
To me, the answer is absolutely not.

I agree, which is a big reason why I want them to hire a new GM.
The way I see it is:
Maybe Arte does the same thing and hires a cheap GM who he micromanages.
But there’s a chance, whatever small percentage it may be, that he hires a new head of baseball ops and changes some of his ways.
And I’d rather have that small chance than just sticking with the current setup.

The ones that are doing well have had limited time under Minasian’s PD.
    - Schanuel, Neto, Joyce, Bachman, O’Hoppe, Silseth.
The one’s that have been in the system for a while are the ones failing.

Credit to him for identifying players who don’t need much work, but it’s his bad PD that helps necessitate that.

I met Schimmel at a benefit for E Street Band keyboardist Danny Frederici at the Troubadour years ago.
He hosted the event and I had read his book Cancer On $5 a Day and told him how much it meant to me as I was going through chemo at the time. We hung out at the front bar and had a long conversation about life, and what was important to us and we bonded in the moment.
Less than a month later he was killed in a car accident.
I'll never forget that conversation we had for as long as I live.
    RIP

This is where you lose me.
Perry bears responsibility for the "less than stellar coaching staff," and that's been the Angels' biggest problem this season (besides injuries).
    - Yeah, he was stuck with Nevin because of Arte, but Perry still chose Nevin as the interim manager back in 2022.
    - Perry let Nevin pick his guy (Thames) as hitting coach.
    - Perry swapped out Chiti for Hezel, which people in the org believe disrupted the pitching staff (as Fletch has documented).

the reason it took so long for the Angels PR department to put out a statement is because they needed time to convince Shohei to stay with the team.  The dude was out.  He was never going to play again this season.  He was done and tired of the charade.
He's pissed about something.  You don't bail on picture day and then clean out your locker without letting someone know if you're just riding out the season.  This doesn't feel like the typical behavior of a superstar impending free agent who's waiting for the season to end.

Because it’s not how things normally go down.  I don’t want to be outraged, or angry.  But to have the MVP, and star of the league to go from day to day, to suddenly clearing out his locker in haste, with things supposedly in the trash also reek of anger or emotion as well.  That and the fact that we had not be announced on the IL, his manager giving updates each day that he’s close.  The team not instantly having a message.  Only the late IL move after all the “drama.”  Add this to the free agency looming after a historic season, it just sucks and we want to hear the story is all.

any anger and outrage I have regarding this team, it’s owner, it’s luck, it’s endless stream of injuries this year, how it’s run at all levels has already come out since the all star break and trade deadline.  This honestly is more depressing as we all know he’s leaving but there’s no goodbye, no swan song, to thank you to the fans that adore him, seems so out of character.  But yeah he could just be emotional after wanting to do more and achieve more this year for his team and yes, himself.  So I get that’s probably a large part of it.
we just want to know is all. The angels terrible communication recently about injuries like Moniak and Rendon (yeah Rendon is digging a hole himself) just add onto that, probably coincidentally.  But it doesn’t help.
    just my two cents

The only confusing thing to me was why they couldn’t just say what happened yesterday.
Clearly, the communication between Perry and the PR staff was off.

I still think calling it a drug dealing scandal is silly. It’s two guys who did drugs together. One was a major league pitcher who paid for the drugs, the other worked for the team and would be the guy that went and got the drugs. It’s the drug equivalent of you fly I’ll buy.

Still, figure it out.  It's a really bad look for the comms team not to have any response at all, even if they found out 10 minutes before the reporters got into the clubhouse.
After the Rendon nonsense ("ask the team" why they didn't update his status) and even Moniak telling reporters he was trying to come back and them noting he wasn't on the IL, followed 10 minutes later by the Angels PR account announcing he was on the IL, it's just pure amateur hour.

As justified as this sentiment may be, people really need to accept the reality nobody can make him sell.  You're best off hoping the effort they showed at the deadline will carry over into the winter or (for your own health) quit watching.  I say this as someone that is as disconnected from this team as I have ever been in my life.

Sorta been the rut the Angels are in last 8 or so years.
    1) Never bad enough to get a top pick.
    2) Never good enough to be a top WS Contender.

The players are never on board with it.  Neither are the managers.  If only because they're playing for their own future contracts.  Plus they don't necessarily care whether the Angels are going to get a better pick, especially if they won't be playing here a year or two down the road.

Posted in the Gameday Thread, but I'll do it here, too: the Angels have dropped to the 11th slot, one game ahead of Cleveland for the 12th slot.  The Angels can't even tank correctly.
