  1. Artie has spent money no denying that. He went after Cole but fell short and did spend money on Rendon. Pitching is name of game and just hard to come by. Again this winter I feel Angels are close but need 2 top pitchers to push them to the top. Skaggs death and injuries to Ohtani have really hurt. I personally think teams will be cutting payroll this off season because of an uncertain future. Artie will need money to develop land he bought. Maybe Reid Detmers and high pick in this years draft will help. Let's hope they keep playoffs at 16 teams.

  2. How excited we were last off season when he became manager. When managers win they get to much credit and when they lose get too blame. 2002 I got a rescue dog named her angel and to this day gets zero credit for her part for helping that season.

While I think Arte is a subpar owner in that he meddles too much when it comes to player personnel and also makes short-sighted decisions when it comes to scouting/analytics/etc, I do think he desperately wants to win and will spend to do it, moreso than most other owners do.  If his #1 priority was finances, he likely would have just kept Eppler on for one more year (and also not fired Ausmus last year).

I think we will see our payroll either stay the same or increase a bit.  I don't anticipate Arte slashing payroll.

Artie is a business man and he knows or should know by now spending money does not translate into wins. I think Angels need to trade for pitching instead of throwing more money at it. I do believe Artie wants to win but this team  has been going in wrong direction. 5 losing seasons with a high payroll. Oakland and Tampa year after year low payrolls and have winning teams. Angels do draw 3 million fans every year so fan base is there to support payroll. You cannot tear this team down and start over with so many big contracts. So many things would have to go right for them to win next year but something has to change to turn this team around.

I saw the figure of $40 million to spend this offseason, with all things tolled. Let's have a bit of fun - how would you spend that money? For this we'll still to AAVs, so don't worry about length of contracts.

Below is a list of estimated 2021 salaries; each player could go for more or less, but I tried to figure out basic groupings of players and an average value for each. Feel free to adjust as you like it, but try to be realistic. These numbers are just a starting point and guesstimate.

    $35M Ace starter: Bauer.

    $22M Elite position player: Realmuto.

$20M Impact position players: Ozuna, Semien, LeMahieu, Springer.

$15M #3 starters: Stroman, Tanaka, Gausman.

$15M Good position players: Gregorius, Simmons, Cruz, Brantley, Schoop.

$12M questionable/bargain #3s: Ray, Odorizzi, Walker, Paxton, Porcello.

    $12M elite reliever: Hendricks.

$10M #4 starters: Minor, Smyly, Milone, Wainwright, Quintana.

$10M solid position players: Pederson, Miller, Turner, La Stella, Cespedes, Hernandez, McCann, Profar, Puig, Villar, Grossman, Molina, Pillar, Kipnis, Galvis, Bradley Jr.

$9M good relievers: Treinen, Colome, Greene, Clippard, Rosenthal, McGee, Soria, Yates.

$8 #5/bargain starters: Richards, Chatwood, Hill, Fiers, Anderson, Cahill.

$6M platoon/good bench players: Cervelli, Flowers, Castro, Avila.

$6M solid relievers: Hunter, Wilson, Bass, May, Holland.

And others. I'm sure there's lots of quibbling with price and categorization, but do your best.

Will Angels be spending at all?

This is why I am a proponent of using Adell in a "mega prospect trade" to secure a top SP prospect - there simply aren't many "aces" available, and the best strategy would be to trade for someone with SP2 potential who, if we get lucky, can maybe even elevate to SP1.  Hence, I'd try to trade him to Detroit for one of Mize/Manning, or if not Detroit, then Cleveland, who has a ton of pitching but no OF prospects to speak of.

Of course, the easiest route would be to just back up the truck for Bauer.  Bauer nicely fills the "ace" role and Bundy can be an SP2/SP3 type.  Ohtani has SP1 upside, but we simply can't count on him at this time - any production from him should be considered a pleasant surprise.

But anyway, if I were to construct my offseason plan, I'd do this:

    1.  Sign Bauer

    2.  Trade Adell + lower level minor leaguer for either Mize or Manning

    3.  Have Ohtani play some reps and learn to play RF, with the intent of having him serve as a 4th OF of sorts

    4.  Sign Brad Miller (1/3?), with the intent of having him fill out the bench.  Notably, he can play 2B, SS, 3B, LF, RF.  Here's a link to his Fangraphs page:  https://www.fangraphs.com/players/brad-miller/12775/stats?position=SS

Lineup:  SS Fletcher, 1B Walsh, CF Trout, 3B Rendon, DH Ohtani, LF Upton, RF Ward (and later, Marsh), C Stassi, 2B Rengifo (or Miller)

    Bench:  1B Pujols, C Bemboom, IF/OF Barreto, IF/OF Miller

Rotation:  Bauer, Bundy, Heaney, Canning, Barria, Ohtani* to start.  Manning/Mize will be "next man up" and likely be SP3 by mid-season.  Suarez would be depth after that, along with Detmers by season's end

Bullpen:  Mayers, Pena, Buttrey, Andriese, Ramirez, Bedrosian, Barnes, Sandoval, Quijada, etc.  Sandoval is the key here - I like his SP potential, but he's been a super effective reliever, and given our need for LH relievers, he'd be a key addition.  This is where strengthening our SP staff (Bauer, Manning/Mize) also helps strength our bullpen, as we'd gain a legitimate BP weapon in Sandoval.

So, TL;DR - by doing the above, we'd gain a legitimate ace (Bauer), possibly acquire another (Manning/Mize have that potential), and if health permits, maybe gain another (Ohtani).

Can Ohtani being playing RF come in and pitch an inn then go back to RF?

I don't mean to be too off topic, but if the Angels sign only one FA starter, and he isn't Trevor Bauer, I would consider this off-season a failure. I'd like to see them sign two, or sign one and trade for another.

Any mention of 6 man rotation Bauer is not coming. Stroman has to be on short list of pitchers u want

Why would Ohtani lose his job again?

Ohtani hasn been hurt and before coming to halos last year in Japan had bad arm. You cannot count on him. If he's healthy and pitches well will be big plus.

I'm not giving him credit for 2017 or 2019...I'm giving him credit for what he is now. I live in Jersey so I see a lot of the Blue Jays as the play the Yankees 19 times a year. I also see a lot of the Mets. And my observations compel me to conclude that some Halos fans' regard for the guy is woefully misguided.

Stroman had a very good 2017; 145 ERA+ and 5.2 bWAR. It was a bonafide all-star season. His 2019 (132 & 3.2) was a borderline all-star season and he actually got picked for the game. But beyond these two seasons, he's been average at best. Also, he's only topped 200 IP twice in his career and the last time was '17. He'll be 30 early into the 2021 season so there's no reason to believe his better days are ahead of him rather than behind.

Don't get me wrong...Stroman is probably still as good and perhaps better than anyone the Angels currently have. But I fear he's going to get overpaid and he is, at best, a middle of the rotation starter. If the Angels are going to overpay for a starting pitcher, how about they do so with Bauer?

Oh, and one more thing...I would have no problem with the club signing Stroman. As long as they also sign Bauer. 🙂

Stroman is an upgrade with or without Bauer. I feel Bauer will be going to a contender like Dodgers (I hope I'm Wrong). Stroman and Robbie Ray would help rotation as you cannot count on Ohtanin.

That's assuming the Angels offer everyone arbitration. Among the relievers due for arbitration--Andriese, Robles, Bedrosian, Ramirez, and Middleton--I could see them wiping the slate clean, and maybe only offering one or two of them arbitration, and letting the rest go, saving the money for a decent free agent reliever, and then building a bullpen with the free agent, Buttrey, Pena, Sandoval, Suarez, Milner, one or two of the arb guys, and maybe eventually Rodriguez and Ortega. And then signing some minor league free agents as back-up.

I agree yo save money Robles, Ramirez, Andriese will not be back. Bedrosian I'm not sure of always ends up on IL. Middleton I keep. Milner I let go. I bring back Pena, Sandoval (if he is not in rotation) Buttrey, Mayers and fill in the rest.

  10. I think you go after Bauer but feel he will go to some team who is in contention every year. Dodgers or Yankees would be front runners. Will need a plan B and C for sure. Many names will be out there most with red flags. Getting a GM in soon I think would help because a lot of work needs to be done. Carpino said it may not be till Thanksgiving. Need to figure out payroll soon know what you can spend. Team right now in total disarray. Many questions need to be answered if they can contend next year.

The last week of both Walsh and Ward was a big dropoff in production. Like the league had enough data to attack their weaknesses. We will see if that is true next season. As for Jones AFL stats, they on the surface look good until you look at the quality of arms in the AFL. A lot of those guys are working on stuff or trying to get in innings after an injury year. There are no Bauers or Grienkes in the AFL.

    AFL has been canceled

Yes, I will happily take this.  Logan White or any Dodger / Ray FO member.  I mean, look at those 2 teams - both #1 seeds, both absolutely stacked in talent in both the majors AND minors.  That is what I want - a winner both today and tomorrow.

Dombrowski has built winners in the past, but I do think he would be best served with a strong farm system builder as his #2.  I think most of us agree in that regard.

I agree how does Tampa and Oakland year after have teams in contention.
