Lol at the morons in the booth too. Guys on first and second with no outs and down by 7 in the 9th.
2-0 to Stassi against a guy that can’t find the plate and O’Neal asks goofball if he should be hacking. Goofball says definitely and then Stassi grounds into a double play.
Why is Stassi swinging 2-0 in this situation. The guy is complete garbage. Zero fucking awareness from these clowns.

Minasian cut Pujols lose, released Upton and fired Maddon.  Those are signs that Arte is letting Minasian do what he needs to do.  Again, those are “signs” that they’re moving in the right direction. Time will tell, but it looks like things could be getting better.

Arte and Carpino need to stay the fuck away from anything baseball related. Having a budget is fine, but just set it and get away.

Then, and this is the most important need and hole for the Angels, they need to hire a Head of Baseball Operations. Someone that oversees the entire org from top to bottom and instills a plan and a process that EVERYONE follows. And if they don’t, get rid of them. That includes players, coaches, ball boys, GMs, anyone.

If they are going to spend money on anything, spend money on this hire. Hire the best guy in the entire world and give him whatever he wants.
Do I believe this will happen? No. Why? Because Arte is a dumbass when it comes to management of this organization and winning is not the #1 priority.

Is it not clear that the Angels development programs rank towards the back half of the pack?
I can not say for certain, but this is what I gather from the small bits we get from the media. It always seems like the Angels are one of the teams trying to skimp on any sort of development. I’m not saying that twin size beds lead to terrible development, but where else are they cutting in terms of trying to get the best out of their players? They clearly are terrible at it.

who hires the GM under the pretense that they will do what is necessary to keep the team competitive on a yearly basis?
four GM's have been hired by the current ownership group and their minions.  They've all consistently made a lot of poor decisions and been generally unable to improve or sustain a farm system above the bottom third in the league outside of when it was influenced by the likes of Trout and Ohtani or essentially after the 2009 draft.  Two of our former GM's are having more success with other teams.
And none of them were stupid.  Each of them took somewhat different approaches to try and satisfy whatever the criteria has been presented to them.  Yet no one can seem to get it to work and create a sustainable model for success.  I wonder why that is.

saw a replay.  That was f'n hilarious.  Like watching a pre-k kid wearing a glove for the first time and if the ball gets above his/her chest, they don't know to turn the glove.  It would have only been better if he'd called time out and his mom brought him a drink of water and rubbed his back.

I think that’s an indicator, especially with this org.

But $ isn’t always the #1 factor. It’s the utilization of the $. And the Angels utilization and distribution is terrible.

Look at the Rays and A’s. I’m guessing their development budgets aren’t as big as the Angels, but they have the right PEOPLE in place to create a system. The Angels clearly lack any sort of organizational philosophy, processes and systems. It’s a giant, disjointed, cluster fuck.

And we were talking about the development of young players and when I think development I’m thinking before they get to the big leagues. Reed should be there to help with their swing, not develop their swing or rework their swing at the major league level.

because if there's anything that young players need it's consistency.  And at some point you have to trust that your process is good.  You also have to know when to blow it up.  But you do your best to put something in place based on all your research and experience and intelligence.  And you don't change it every year because that's even more of a problem.  There needs to be trust.  I'm all for trying new things, and tinkering is fine.  But don't throw a completely different approach at these guys every year.
and do it right on the front end.  Don't try to go about it with half measures.
    @Lou will appreciate this.
'If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?'
and it's not just about time.  Set up a process that give a greater chance to succeed but also put failsafe's in place to make appropriate adjustments without have to start all over if it doesn't work exactly how you anticipated.

    I kind of disagree, respectfully.
I do think he cares and that he wants to win, but he's far more concerned with making a profit and is ultimately satisfied when he does, regardless of what the team did.
That's fine, I guess. All owners want to make a profit. I just don't think he's willing to do what is needed to actually get this team to the playoffs. He might make a "big splash" signing but then cuts off the budget so the GM can't fix the other major issues. See: Rendon.
Some people call him cheap. I think he might be to a certain degree, but I won't get into that discussion because it goes nowhere. For the MLB team, he's definitely willing to spend. He spends a lot each year; no one can say otherwise. Unfortunately, we're in a cycle where Arte sticks to a strict budget which hamstrings the GM, so we have to fill gaping holes with Matt Duffy and take risks on Syndergaard and Lorenzen. It's the same thing every year.
Now I'm not saying spending money automatically equals success. But when you're in the situation the Angels are, it seems to be the only way out. We have a weak farm system with few tradable assets. Any tradable assets we do have would hurt the team.
But next offseason, Minasian is going to get a tight budget to work with to fill a ton of holes, which means more flyers on injured pitchers and mediocre depth signings. And once again, it's not going to work.
Btw, there have been 4 GM's and 4 managers since 2010. Only 1 owner. 0 playoff wins and 7 straight losing seasons. Something to think about.

I keep thinking that maybe they could buy their way out of this.  Not on a grand scale like in the form of big payday's on multi year deals but bumping payroll up for some 1 and 2 year deals and get more guys like Syndergaard instead of guys in that 2-10 mil range.  Theoretically, they'd have been paying an extra 10m on various individual players (each) to give the team a better chance to win but to also likely have a guy of greater value in trade at the deadline if things didn't go right.
And there is something in there as to why the execution of this rebuild (which I agree it has been - just a slow, painful, and poorly constructed one) hasn't really worked.
this popped up as I was posting and it lends to the above.  What have they been doing where it's just been so very awful?  And not just the signings, but some of the smaller trades as well.
Part of it is that the roster has needed so much repair on a year to year lately with little in the way of the farm to provide any of that.  6 spots to fill from your top 14-18 guys on both sides of the ball each year plus hope that the remainder don't crap the bed.  Because you've got nothing after them.
Eppler could have gotten away with my proposed approach but instead he tried to complete the roster and hope that he could get 5 undervalued guys to perform every year.  He was able to build the roster up to the point where there was some young guys with potential so then the next course should have been to build up around them and give them backup should they fail.  But Minasian did the complete opposite and left positions completely unattended or without even a remote semblance of a safety net.
This year to year approach is just so ill conceived and I think where they've done a really piss poor job as an organization is evaluating who they are as an org at both the major and minor league levels.  They just haven't been honest with themselves internally and this is where I have a problem with Moreno and his leadership from the top down.  The opportunity to provide brutal honesty to him and legitimately tell him that hey, I know you want and expect to win.  And I know you support this team with a lot of money, but spending money on guys like Bour and Harvey and Teheran and Cahill and Maybin and Nolasco or trading for guys like Bundy is just flushing money down the toilet.  It's just not realistic that those types of moves are going to work.  Even Rendon.  I appreciate that he's willing to spend.  But they weren't a Rendon away from making the playoffs.
Arte doesn't tell these guys who to sign for the most part (is my guess).  But what I think he does tell them in general is that he expects them to put together a roster that has a chance to win.  And other the last decade it's been a wash, rinse, repeat of these patchwork rosters and poorly spent money in order to try and piece together something that really you shouldn't be trying to piece together in that way.
It's kinda like when the favorite toy gets broken.  And you spend hours trying to fix it.  You go buy glue and tape and jerry rig the shit out of it and maybe get it back to functional but it never really works right after that and you can sure as shit tell that it was and pretty much still is broken.

It reminds me of an ongoing political argument I have with my father. He believes in the "lesser of two evils" argument to voting. I used to, but no longer. Why? Because as long as you keep voting for shit, you'll keep getting shit. Meaning, if it is always the "lesser of two evils" (on whatever side of the political spectrum you are), all your side has to do is be slightly better than the other side - and really, all they have to do is sell themselves as slightly better, which usually comes down to portraying the other side as worse than they actually are.
But what if we said, "enough is enough - I'm voting third party until my side actually offers someone who is interested in improving the lives of citizens rather than enriching their donors." Again, this works on both sides.
For baseball, this means saying to Arte; "Fuck you, I'm not giving you a dime more of my money until you improve the product."
