They still need to draft a pitcher in the first round.   Pitching wins titles, and is always a desired entity.

Pennington is the worst hitter of the bunch, and i believe the oldest. I think Petit and Cowart should be getting those ab's. Going forward i think Petit should be the backup ss/2b.  Trade Pennington for a prospect arm.

Signing Weaver to pitch next year is not a low risk move, it is a stupid one. He's done.

Escobar is a singles hitter with poor base running skills, and poor defense.

Cowart is a 24 year old that hit .280 in AAA. Yes, he's athletic, and yes he's a great defender. But other than that, you aren't going to get much else. Cowart should hit .250 in the majors, but he won't be hitting more than 10 HR in a season.
But still, .250 with 40 XBH and good defense still makes him a 2-win player.
But that value needs to be allocated correctly. We need a lead off hitter, and without Escobar or his offensive equivalent, this lineup just doesn't produce, we've seen that.
Our best move really is shifting Escobar to 2B.

If the Angels want to be competitive and hope to be Chacin a playoff spot next year, their starting pitching is going to need a complete Oberhoulzin this off season. No more Weavin old arms into the rotation that need to be tossed to the curb. They need younger arms. By not doing so , would have the team heading down the wrong Street.

Has Cruz hit a homer every game against the Angels this year? Sure seems like it!!

Would like to see him draw a walk sometime, but at least he's not striking out like crazy and making good contact. Doesn't look anxious or overmatched.

greginpsca reacted to Blarg in When do you predict our farm will move out of the cellar?
The A+ through AAA will be the last of the Dipoto (Spell check wants to change his name to Divot, which seems appropriate)   draftees working through the system next season. So far not many future cups of coffee in that group but there may be a couple sleepers, Scott would know better on this.
I am anxious to see where the next draft takes shape in terms of the type of players selected. Win now means college guys sucking up all the high draft picks to put butts on the bench sooner. All high school/JuCo would be more patience than what the parent club is going to have considering what we have in the way of players phasing out in three years.
A draft similar to this year's is what I expect,  Eppler going for some high ceiling guys at the bottom and a mix between near ready college and best athlete high school. Sprinkled in will be some off the grid guys that don't get much scouting action in their region, maybe as non drafted pick ups.
Creative but sensible is what I would like to see. Then watch the farm develop from a wider range of talent,  fewer high floor/low ceiling guys so the team make up isn't so vanilla.

Just give Cowart 3B in 2017, and see what happens.
Trade Escobar for a solid reliever.
    Reinvest in Latin America.
Sign a 2B that won't cost much and not have a 2nd round pick attached.   Playing Cowart at 2B would be a waste of a great throwing arm.
Sign a decent LF who wouldn't cost a 2nd round pick.
Let Street mentor Bedrosian, Middleton, Alcantara, D. Guerra, Morin, and Ramirez.
Tell Cron to work hard on 1B defense.
Tell Pujols he is permanent DH from now on.
Stay with Bandy and Perez for the next two seasons.   Then see if Ward supplants Perez.
Wait until after 2018 to truly go back into FA.   By then, Pujols' salary (3 years for $87 million) is the only major issue.
Starting pitching should sort itself out by either 2018 or 2019.
Maybe contend in 2018, but expect it in 2019.

To be honest,  Santiago will already be at The Catch drinking at that point having used up his pitch count by the fourth inning.

That wasn't mine but I would be totally open to that, while having no idea if it would work.
My main concern is Cowart though. The vast majority of his value comes from being able to play third really well. Unless he can play second equally well, which seems a little doubtful, he should not be changing position.

Hmm, a guy has a great season for the Rangers and hits free agency.  The Angels pay full market price and then some on a huge multi year contract.
    What could possibly go wrong?
Seems like I've read that book before.

When you watch Escobar at 3rd it seems he's not comfortable with the ball getting on him quickly or throwing across the diamond. I think he'd be more comfortable playing deeper at 2B and making the types of throws a 2B makes.

I'm in the camp of not caring who plays second as long as Cowart plays plenty of third base.

I have a feeling Cowart will not be with the Org next year. Seems that the Org has made it clear that they don't feel he is ML caliber. Hoping he can get a chance with another Org.

They will turn it around quicker than most organizations that have been in similar predicaments. Their financial resources for payroll are better than most. At the end of this season the contracts of Weaver and Wilson are gone. Hamiltons contract is over in a year.
I do think they should follow Stonemans  plan of drafting athletes. Hitters that can play defense. No more one trick ponies [cough, Cron,
cough]. Keep getting younger. No more Nava's,Gentry's, Victorino's,Dejesus, etc. Draft and trade for more young arms. Remember how Stoney didn't like to trade prospects.
