Gameday Thread: 8/28 Angels @ Tigers: Cowart at 2B again

Recommended Posts

Small sample size alert but...

.286/.310/.500./810 and hitting 9th.

This Cowart looks ready to be a major league player full time. I think the Angels may have found their finished product to take 2nd or third base next season. My preference would be next season he is the starting 2nd baseman with Escobar on third. The following season will have to work itself out as to who is playing 2nd or 3rd but if Cowart shows he can man 2nd then leave him there so we have a long term double play combo rather than a revolving door up the middle.

I think I'll opt for the wait and see approach on Cowart. When Marte first came up, I'm pretty sure he looked like our future cleanup hitter.

Kaleb's actions are efficient and relaxed. He looks good out there, but let's not jump the gun. Let's see what he does in Sptember. Even if he manages only to hit .250 with a .320 OBP, I'd still make him out starting 3B, and slide Escobar to 2B.

It's a complete waste of Cowart's arm, build and quick twitch reactions to put him at 2B while Escobar continues to look good one play and a bonehead the next. Put him at 2B where his middle infield experience actually gives him somewhat of an advantage.

:dancing-with-joy-smiley-emoticon:

GO ANGELS!!! Go Tyler Skaggs!!!

Get (back?) on track, Mr. Skaggs. Pitch today. Pitch deep into the game. Pitch to keep the Angels in the game.

Go Albert, Mike, Kole, Kaleb, CJ, Simba and the rest!! Score enough runs to win the weekend series.

Looked at the weather readings and you'll have to sweat this one out.

I believe that Simmons could play with someone different each day and still be a plus defender, so I am not as concerned about a revolving door.

When I watch him play I feel exactly the same about him as you do, but it's hard to get around the poor minor league track record. Obviously we saw the same stuff our scouting department saw when we drafted him 18th overall. He has all the tools.

Because of his up and down performance in the minors Cowart will have to hit his way to the Show. i really like his glove and overall defense so I hope he makes it. And I agree if he sticks just move Escobar to 2B and let him continue to lead-off while Cowart plays 3B. It's too early to draw any conclusions as to whether Cowart belongs or not but it would be huge for the Angels if he can hit.

I agree, but at most it's only something that will happen this September, and next April through July. I can't see Escobar being an Angel past next deadline. We aren't overly concerned with competing in '17, so what does it matter if defense is a little effed at third?

This way he can go through whatever offensive growing pains he will have at second and they will be far less absorbed from that position. He's only 24, five months playing at second isn't going to hurt him.

His bad seasons were in AA when the hitting coach tried to fix his swing. He has done pretty well in AAA after regaining the swing he had previously.

.280/.340 /.452/.792  34 2B - 8 HR - 58 RBI. I wouldn't call that poor necessarily with his GG type defense.

We'll I think he's done well enough to merit a shot, but that is mostly due to his defense. His numbers look ok on the surface, but then you have to remember its AAA, and then remember that it's Salt Lake.

His numbers both this year and last weren't much different home or away.  In fact last season he was much better on the road than in Salt Lake.
