  1. With all the hand washing these days....I was having trouble keeping paper towels in the house.    So I ordered a huge case of commercial-style multi-fold paper towels and two cheap dispensers for them  ($12 each, I think).    It's worked pretty well so far.    They don't work very well to wipe up or clean stuff.   But they work ok for drying hands once you get used to them, which saves the other kind for clean up stuff.

I've seen a few posts now from people who are not doing so great emotionally these days.    My heart goes out to them.  I've shared that my family has been getting up at a set time each day and going for a long walk.    We've been doing this for a few weeks now and it seems to be really helping to get some exercise and sun.   Just as importantly, it gives us some structure.    A reason to not stay up all night.   A reason to not wear pajamas all day.   A reason to keep up appearances.     A reason to take a break from screens.  I'm basically getting fanatical about making sure it happens.   Luckily, the rest of the fam is on board.

Is anyone else doing a certain thing that seems to help them be ok these days?

So I've been tossing this around in my head for a few days:

My daughter (20) works at Dunkin' Donuts doing random, various tasks. Some days she's the drive through person, some days the order fulfiller, some days, etc.  (you get the picture).  It's a part time job where she happens to make pretty decent money that helps her to afford the things she wants and helps with college expenses.  She has a group of work friends that is her social circle right now.  (She commutes to CSUF.)

Dunkin' currently has walk-in and drive through services, but no indoor seating is allowed.  I'm a little uncomfortable with her working and have attempted to dissuade her from continuing to work.  Her mother (my ex-wife) and my current wife agree that the risk outweighs the benefits.  We've both had discussions about her quitting, but my daughter continues to resist.  She can be quite the little bitch when she puts her mind to it.

I haven't pulled the Dad Card yet, but I'm worried enough that I may have to. My question (at long last):  am I overreacting?

She's explained Dunkin's "commitment to cleanliness", wears gloves, and washes hands often.  I've countered with many of the logical arguments.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

To complicate things even further, a lot of opinions on this are sharply divided along political lines.    I live in a conservative area and our school board is already planning on opening schools on April 23rd  (as compared to CSULB, which has decided to go strictly online until the end of the school year).   My decision process is much less complicated because I don't have to consider economic/political concerns that the school board does....so, when the time comes, if I don't feel very good about the safety....my HS sophomore is staying home.   But she's 16  (not 20) and I would think a Dunkin Donuts would be a much cleaner environment that a HS campus w/ 1,000 student (not the most hygienic group)  mingling all day.

  4. State is closing beach parking lots today.   I suppose that is good in some ways...a lot of beach parking in LA county was already closed and the last thing we need is people driving down to OC beaches from other areas.    But it's taking away an option for a lot of OC residents to get outdoors.

We have stopped visiting across the prison system. We are checking incoming staff for temperature at shift change. Anyone 100.4 or higher is being sent home. We have an area on the yard set aside for quarantine if we need it. There have been some false alarms, but so far nothing positive. We had a canteen employee who came through at an odd time when we weren't screening. He went onto the yard with flu-like symptoms. We have quarantined the 20 inmates that he was in close contact with. He has been tested for COVID-19, and we are awaiting the results. So far, everyone that we have tested has been positive for Influenza-A, which rules out COVID-19 according to our briefings from the CDC.

The latest CDC briefing that we received said that if a person contracts COIVID-19, some symptom will appear within 72 hours. People may not develop all of them, but even the people who are asymptomatic won't stay that way.

As if working in the prison system isn't already stressful enough.   Thanks for what you do.

    You eat styrofoam?

Remember styrofoam coffee cups?   They tasted a little bit like styrofoam too.

I knew someone was going to ask about this.  But, in the spirit of helping you have your fun,  I didn't mention it in my original post.   It's my contribution towards everyone keeping their spirits up.   You're welcome!

If things continue this way, it’s also going to affect things like graduation.

The juniors at my daughter's HS were supposed to take the SAT's this past Friday.....  No pressure kids....just stay sharp and you'll get tested sometime between next week and August....

  8. In 1980, I was a freshman at the University of Arizona.   My dorm was right next to the football stadium and baseball field.   I used to drift into the baseball games for free whenever it fit my schedule.   We had an outstanding outfielder named Terry Francona and won the College World Series that season.   Ooo!  Ahh!  Sock-it-to-um Wildcats!

The next year, I transferred to Arizona State to be closer to my fiance....and the Sun Devils won it all my first year there.  A-S-U!  A-S-U!  A-S-U!

  9. I'm playing it safe, but that is easy and low cost for me and my family right now.   I'm retired and a stay at home father.   I kept my youngest out of high school starting yesterday and her district is expected to announce school closings after the board meets this afternoon.   My wife's workplace has gone strictly telecommute.   My son is a college student (not Yale.  🙂 )and they going with online courses so he'll be at home for a while.    So, we all are getting some work done and just hanging out at home this weekend and we'll see how it goes....treating it a bit like a working staycation.     I feel so fortunate that I don't have to make some of the very tough decisions that others are making these days.

Just get the marketing dept to call Anaheim Memorial Hospital, then get them to sponsor the world record for most people wearing surgical masks at a baseball game...

  11. I guess I'm waiting to see how it plays out before I attribute worldwide Covid-19 concerns to politically motivated "fear mongering"  U.S. media.    Does it make sense to panic?  Of course not.    But when does it ever make sense to panic?   I think it doesn't cost too much to play it safe and see how it goes.

Also, I just found out CSULB is going with all online courses for a while.

Ya I definitely see a scenario where games are played without fans attendance. But if that’s the case I definitely could see MLB looking out for the owners and players etc and just delaying the start to the season or postponing games. It’s a weird time right now.

Yep...at least a possibility.   We'll see how it goes.
