Dtwncbad got a reaction from Angel Dog and Beer in Upton will likely opt-out
You cant argue with Upton"s production.
I would be very happy to keep him.
The only thing that scares me is the 180 strikeouts.
Strikeouts don't bug me if you produce despite the strikeouts.  But isn't it reasonable to worry a bit about what 180k turns into over the next 4 Years or more?  At some point you become that guy with 200k and an under .300 OB. . .and you shouldnt be paying monster money for that kind of player.

Dtwncbad got a reaction from daygloman in Stanton wants out if they rebuild
He told Jon Heyman he wants no part of a rebuild and "I have lost for 7 years."
If they want to reduce payroll to rebuild the team, as they reportedly do, then this dude is getting traded in the next 3 months.
He is in his prime, prime years right now.
Go for it.  He is a beast.
Does anyone realize what kind of year Trout would have with Stanton behind him?
    50 bombs?
    .345/.440/.720?

Well of course.  He isn't attached to a monster contract that few can afford.  That is actually part of the appeal.  The better player and cheaper in prospects.

And do this at every position so that the Angels stay way under the lux tax and have 5 or 6 very mediocre players plugged into holes, then just pray they somehow squeek out 83 wins and make a wild card spot. . .
And if they win 77 games we can all celebrate how well they did "considering"

Yelich?  good idea.  Much cheaper right? In fact why not save even more than that and go find a .725 OPS guy who makes 5m?  No wait!  How about a .695 OPS guy for like 2m????

Fair.  I am guilty of wanting a better roster and being unsatisfied. And when the team misses the postseason by a game it will annoy me.
And if they get in the postseason and fall flat it will annoy me.
This team could have brought in one impact player to make the difference and they chose not to, presumably because they didn't want to pay the luxury tax on the amount over.
First year is only 20%.  So if they Had a $24m player full over, they would pay $4.8m.
I doubt I am alone in thinking this would have been worth it, especially considering 2018 would still be under the cap so the penalty would then disappear.
It's late September and they are 1.5 games out of the postseason and probably one significant player away from being dangerous.
I think 2017 was a blow it on making spending decisions.

It's like watching a movie with boring characters where they throw in a ton of car chases with no meaningful plot.  Are the car chases exciting if they don't mean anything?
Maybe this conversation forces me to hone in on what is really going on for me in watching this team.
I don't think any of this matters because I dont think they are even remotely good enough to have any chance at all in the postseason if they were even able to sneak in.
    There.  I said it.  I don't believe.
It is way more fun to believe, but if you don't you don't.

Dtwncbad got a reaction from Angel Oracle in Angels roster could change a lot before 2018
Except there really is enough room under the luxury tax to afford both Upton and a legitimate, reliable starter.

My guess is the replay is only used to determine what the umpire called. . .hit by pitch or not hit by pitch.
The fact that the replay may have revealed something else both not called and not challenged (location of the foot) would be ignored.

I have enough patience for him to struggle through 2018 to get past 3000 hits.  But I really think he should retire at the end of 2018 if he is still performing at his current level.
I can respect his interest in 3000.  I hope he respects my patience for that and respects my interest in moving on after 2018.

Dtwncbad got a reaction from Angel Oracle in Upton move hints at offseason plan
Acquiring Upton and Phillips shows the front office acknowledges the need for (at least) one impact bat.
The move commits the Angels to Upton if he does not opt out.
Therefore, The Angels are telegraphing that they need, want, and are willing to pay for at least one impact offensive player.
So maybe Upton doesn't opt out and I am happy they have him.  I think he would be smart to opt out because I think he can secure more money.
I am just glad to see the move because it tells me if Upton opts out they WILL spend some money on a high impact bat to replace him.

Just put Pujols at short and then lets listen to Scioscia post game say all the balls past him were squared up and tough plays. . .maybe remind us how Pujols in his career has always been a good glove guy.

There are lots if land mines in this subject so I continue to be careful.
I am simply saying the product on the field and the data delivered is gonna have to match the market or the market goes somewhere else.  That's just the way it is.
I personally would never buy a newspaper for sports coverage at this point and about 90% of the time I hear a player or manager interviewed it is blah blah blah.  So I don't even pay attention anymore to it.
I watch sports with friends and I realize how we have the sound down and we have tines out the announcers and analysts because their input is garbage compared to honest conversations among the people in the room.
I spend what time I have on sports stuff in a forum room to share ideas instead of clicking around to read what talking heads say.
I am not unique.  I'm fact I am an old fart at 50.  What do we realistivally expect this next generation to consume?  Blah blah blah from Mike Scioscia?
I can't predict what I am going to have for dinner tonight but I am pretty comfortable predicting the main channel of baseball data delivery (a microphone in MS face with BS, pat me on the head with insulting vanilla answers) is going the way of the way of the dinosaur.

I have a historical love for Pujols and I am not mad at him.  I think he is trying.  My annoyance is the culture.
I really don't think there is anything wrong with addressing it.  Get real.  Drop him in the lineup and start engaging in conversations to make a plan to resolve this.
What's the plan?  And I get ripped if I suggest somebody should be asking that question.

Nobody wants to give up young talent. The teams needs more offense and needs high level players in their prime.
And we have people saying pass on Stanton because he is expensive in salary?
How does anyone think this team is going to acquire high level talent in their prime without giving up young talent?
Duh.  It will be by paying MONEY for it instead.
I'm a way, Stanton is tailor made for the Angel current situation (If the Marlins would accept another team giving them less in talent to take his whole contract).

I don't see it as pointless to harp on this subject when the entire scope of people interacting with Pujols appears to be mutually complicit in this The King Has No Clothes situation.
Why would anybody in that safe haven world consider changing anything they doing (or not doing) on the subject unless there is growing pressure from the actual customers?
