  1. Heyward would be 32 after a six year contract and Cespedes 36 (if he really is only 30 now) Heyward has very similar stats to Calhoun but better base stealing stats and similar defense. Calhoun, Trout and Heyward would be a great OF. Not sure Angels need another power hitter. Acquire a legit lead off hitter, Calhoun #2, Heyward #3, Trout #4 and Pujols #5
  2. TradeTrout to RSox for Swihart, Mookie Betts and Marget (their top OF prospect who is 20 - replace Calhoun in 3+ years). Fish traded Miggy when he was 24. Trouts irreplaceable but this gets a quality CF and top level catching prospect who's at the major league level and a top level OF prospect which the Angels don't have. Trade for Dee Gordon or stay with Johnny G. or give Grant Green another chance? Maybe T. Featherstone? Sign Heyward. Give 3B to Cowart. Ask Weaver very politely to retire or waive his no-trade clause. Now this should get a lot of negative responses.
  3. Freese is the top and youngest 3B free agent. He will substantial offers from teams needing a 3B. Hopefully it's not the Angels! Let Cowart play 3B...great defense and he just needs to play.
  4. "There are actually a few things wrong with this statement". Actually there aren't. Weaver could be DFA'd and then traded (yes-if he agrees and why wouldn't he?) or if he doesn't agree then cut loose. I hate to see the Weaver era end too but it's time for the Angels to move on if they want to keep competitive in the AL West. His 82 mph fastball doesn't cut it as witnessed in Cleveland. Hopefully he'll retire graciously after this year. But he needs to go for if he doesn't either Skaggs or Shoemaker go to bullpen or AAA which doesn't make sense for their development and both of them need to be part of the starting five next year. Both have proved they are major league starting pitchers. What I said about Wilson is let him pitch until July to build up his value (it's his walk year btw so he should come out gunning for a big contract) and if Newcomb is ready then trade Wilson. If Newcomb is ready in July there's definitely no reason to hold him back for he appears to be the Angels ace of the future. If Newcomb's not ready and Wilson is pitching well then keep Wilson. Keeping nonproductive players on the payroll just because they have big contracts doesn't make sense and it's clear Arte will get rid of such players as he did with Vernon Wells. My response to the post was about reworking the Angels now in order to stay young and be competitive. Heyward and Gordon are 27 and would bring in young productive players. Weaver and Wilson doesn't accomplish the goal of getting younger and staying competitve.
  5. This could have been a remake of the Monty Python sketch - "Dead Parrot" with Sosh as Eric Idle.
  6. White Sox aren't a very good baseball team - they swept the Angels in August Indians aren't a very good baseball team - they swept the Angels in August It was said the Astros aren't a very good baseball team - they swept the Angels in July Dodgers probably aren't a very good baseball team either - they swept the Angels in July/August We did land on the moon and the earth isn't flat either
  7. The Angels traded Hamilton so why can't they trade CJ and Weaver?
  8. The Angels traded Hamilton so why can't they trade CJ and Weaver? They'll just be taking up roster spots in 2016.
  9. Realistically, it's unrealistic the Angels any chance to make the playoffs. Time to let Cowart and Perez play full time, give Tropeano five or six starts (shut down Weaver...I'm too distraught to watch him anymore) and maybe even bring up Newcomb and let him pitch in relief a few times...what a season he's had!
  10. Makes sense to bring in a mentor for Perez to limit Perez' innings. Cespedes worries me. Why has every team traded him so soon after acquiring him? Plus I think the Mets will go $$$$$$$ crazy to sign him. Heyward comes from a great organization (Braves) and if the Cardinals traded for him that means a lot. Under stand right vs. left bat but Heyward is 4 years younger than Cespedes and much better defender. Agreed he doesn't have Cespedes' power though which is enticing.
  11. Keeping Weaver and CJ Wilson just stunts growth of younger pitchers so "trading" them went with thread of developing the younger pitchers (Skaggs, Newcomb...etc.) Some may actually trade for them too if the Angels pay a good portion of their salaries. Pujols still has value as his 30+ homers and rbi total show. Plus no team will trade for him either. Hopefully he'll slide into full time DH and be like Big Poppy. To Angel Oracle - catcher is a tough call. There really aren't any free agent catchers that look that enticing and don't want Angels to deplete minors of top talent (if they traded for Dee Gordon already).
  12. 1. Fire Scioscia and hire manager who can work with and develop young talent. 2. Base team on pitching and defense. Put best defender at each position. 2. Change the makeup of the lineup by trading for Dee Gordon (Santiago and Baldoquin + others if needed). Get better defense at 2nd and have a lead off hitter with speed. 3. Trade Weaver...hurts to see him pitch with 84mph fastball. 4. Trade CJ Wilson when he's healthy and insert Newcomb into the starting rotation (Richards, Heaney, Newcomb, Skaggs and Shoemaker/Ellis/Tropeano..etc). 5. Put Cowart at third and let him play. What a defensive player he is and he's looked ok offensively so far. 6. Resign Aybar. 7. Let Perez play everyday. Ward is two years away. Don't sign Wieters. He's always on the injured list these days. 8. Sign Heyward for whatever it takes. Great defense, young, productive hitter. Don't...don't...don't sign Cespedes. 9. Resign Murphy and platoon Murphy and Cron at DH. Lineup: Gordon, Calhoun, Trout, Pujols (were stuck with him), Heyward, DH (Cron or Murphy), Aybar, Cowart, Perez
  13. Since returning to lineup at end of July from wrist injury (Angels are 7-12) here are Trout's stats: .188 BA - 3 doubles - 2 HR's - 7 RBI's and 21K's in 82 plate appearances BA has dropped from .312 to .294 OBP has dropped from .404 to .391 Slugging% has dropped from .642 to .586 Hurt or just in a mini-slump??
  14. These lists only promote future top of the order pitchers and all-star position players - which make up about 10 to 15% of a major league team. The Matt Shoemakers, Nate Smith's and Chris Ellis' won't make these lists even though they are/could become important pitchers in the present/future Angels rotation. Where is it officially posted that Newcomb is going to AA btw? Nothing on Angels, Travelers or IE's websites.
  15. Being an east coast Angel fan and a Nats fan - the Nats wouldn't trade Werth. He's the grit of the team and deflects a lot of attention away from Harper. And he plays RF 90% of the time - Nats move Harper to LF. Don't get why everyone wants to trade Wilson. He's been pitching well this season vs how Shoe or Weaver have and there's no guarantee Heaney will continue to pitch like he is.
  16. "Voting shall be based upon the player's...integrity, sportsmanship, character..." Never should Pete Rose be voted into the Hall of Fame even if he has the stats.
  17. Mathis did have some good years in the minors hitting .300, .287, .315, .278 and .289. Hit 21 homers with 78 RBI' one year at AAA. Correct answer to who is this Angel is: Albert Pujols.
  18. Heavy, bulky body. Extra weight on lower half. Future weight problem. Aggressive hitter with mistake HR power. Tends to be a hacker. Chases. Projected round: 9th This is what the scouts wrote about this current Angel player. Who is it? Scouting reports aren't 100% accurate...players develop. Give Taylor Ward a chance to develop before crucifying him or comparing him to Jeff Mathis.
  19. Didn't see Green play SS but his play at 1st Sunday night bordered on abyssmal. Didn't stretch to catch Giavotella's throw after Johnny had made a great play behind 2nd. Actually caught it even with his body. It cost the Angels an out which eventually scored. Didn't come off of bag on Giavotella's errant throw costing the Angels another run. Even Iron Hands Cabrera for the Tigers came off the bag to save a run in a later innings on a similar play. And his play of the squibber off the end of the bat was comical. Lucky the Tigers didn't ask for reply that showed he touched it before it went foul. He let the ball play him and wasn't aggressive. Which is what it seems like he does both on the field and at the plate. All in all he appears to be an inadequate defensive player. One could argue he's been playing different positions and not playing much but he's been playing catch and fielding grounders at a high level for many years in college and the pro's. Looks as lost at bat too - in fact I thought the Angels had brought back Brandon Wood.
  20. Revere would add much needed speed and defense and has a plus attitude and is a hard worker (look it up and read what Denard Span had to say about him). Cowgill is a good spare part but when playing everyday his warts show. Joyce needs to strictly be a DH. Revere has proved he can hit .300 over a season and in his early minor league career did take some walks so maybe all he needs is a change of scenery. The Phillies have tipped their hand and shown he's not in their plans so the cost should be cheap - none of the Angels top prospects for sure and especially not any of their top pitching prospects. The Phils are motivated to trade Revere for they don't want a minor leaguer making $4M+. Why Howard has crept into the discussion is crazy. Joyce and Cron are the Angels DH for the season.
  21. The return of Torii Hunter !!!!! Only hitting .280 with 6 HR's and 21 RBI's. Minnesota needs pitching and isn't going to compete in the long run this season.
  22. Still haven't figured out why Arte thought it better to give $25M+ per year for Hamilton than Grienke. Grienke and Richards at the top of rotation would have been very, very solid.
  23. "Props to other fine contributions such as "bunch of junk article" and "screw all the doubters". And yes Oz27 your response was quite erudite. Weaver is 131-69 life time. The five pitchers I mentioned are a combined 143-155. None of them have sniffed the air that Weaver has pitched in. To rank each of the five with a higher WAR just shows the falicy of WAR. Jason Hammel is Weavers age, is 59-70 lifetime and his WAR is 1.8 and Weavers 1.5??? Yeah, bunch of junk was too kind actually.
  24. It truely is a New Epoch....where Johnny G will redefine the bottom rung of 2B the Angels have had. And then the Angels will trade away top prospects to get a 2B to replace Johnny G/Rutledge. Which means they will have traded away top prospects to get what they already had - Howie.
