  1. Replacing Howie with Johnny G/Rutledge is ugly and will come back to bite the Angels in 2015. The Royals gave up on Johnny G because he was a terrible defensive 2B. Rutledge can't hit ML pitching. In watching Haney during ST, he doesn't appear to have an "out" pitch that works at the ML level and so will add little or nothing in 2015 to the Angels rotation. And the Angels already have Richards, Shoe, Skaggs and Weaver for 2016 plus Tropeano, Rucinski...etc. Haney doesn't add anything to that list so trading a top 5 AL 2B for him straight up was a huge blunder.
  2. You know WAR is joke stat when Jason Hammel, Carlos Martinez, Zach McAllister and even Jon Niese have a higher projected WAR than Weaver. Even CJ Wilson has a higher projected WAR than Weaver. Bunch of junk article. Can't define with stats how Weaver continues to win 15+ games per year.
  3. The same reason Donavan Tate was taken third in 2009 draft and Mike Trout was taken 25th. Scouts aren't always correct because makeup/desire/work ethic isn't a quantifiable stat. TV/magazine sports analysts are lip flappers who typicallly don't know squat. The Oakland A's recently stated that they don't pay a bit of attention to any of the minor league team or player rankings.

  8. "Men At Work" by George Will. Written for the hard-core baseball fan, Will persuaded such notables as Tony La Russa (managing), Orel Hershiser (pitching), Cal Ripken (fielding) and Tony Gwynn (hitting) to offer details on the finer points of the game. "Baseball is like church. Many attend, but few understand."
  9. "Three Nights in August" - captures the strategic and emotional complexities of baseball's quintessential form, the three-game series. As the St. Louis Cardinals battle their archrival Chicago Cubs, we watch from the dugout through the eyes of legendary manager Tony La Russa, considered by many to be the shrewdest mind in the game today
  10. 95 wins as long as Hamilton gets hurt in Spring Training, misses the entire year, forcing the Angels to get a productive left fielder.
  11. If they Angels are serious about winning next year (World Series) they only need to look at the make up of the Royals and Giants outfields. The Angels have Trout and Calhoun. They need a LF in the mold of Calhoun - cheap, hustler, good defense and a grinder at the plate. Not a PRIMA DONNA like Hamilton. Pay $15M / year of Hamilton's salary for another team to take him...straight up no trade and use the $10M saved (and give all Angel fans the relief of not having to watch Hamilton not give a s--- every at bat) to sign a mid-level pitcher and LF. It can be done for $10M - Vargas makes $8M and Ioki $1.25. And on someone taking Hamilton? He's a lot better upside than Wells did when the Angels fell in that pile of Hamilton.
  12. Not saying all these are great options but at least they have MLB experience and might be available - and it's for 7 or 8 starts. And with Angels in first place the A's would probably block them from getting to the Angels. Just not sure the Angels AAA or AA pitchers are capable or ready to step in and give the starts needed. Trevor Cahill - DBacks Edwin Jackson - Cubs Bartolo Colon - Mets AJ Burnett - Phillys Ricky Nolasco - Twins John Danks - WSox
  13. 2014 GIDP Pedroia - 12 times Kipnis - 12 times Altuve - 12 times Kinsler - 11 times Cano - 11 times Howie - 12 times There should be a lot of 2B on the market this off season.

  15. "The Orioles have a comfortable lead in the AL East and there's nothing great about that team aside from a couple of bullpen arms" Jones & Machado are close to the best at their positions and Markakis, Hardy, Davis and Cruz are solid roll players. Defensively they are very good too. Their pitching is good also - not great - with Tillman, Chen and Gausman. Jimenez seems to be getting better too as of late. Britton is lights out as a closer and they have a solid bullpen. So don't count the O's out. Dodgers have the best pitching and that will be tough to beat...I just don't like the character of their team to go all the way. Too many individuals. Angels will be there if they can find a replacement for Skaggs to go along with Richards and Weaver. Can't count on Shoemaker or Santiago and especially not Wilson at this stage. The offense will come back at some point. Brewers are the dark horse - similar to the O's but better pitching - they can beat the Dodgers as they recently showed. Royals are too young and their offense is questionable and beyond Shields their top three pitching is very, very young and not playoff tested. Vargas is really struggling too. Tigers need Verlander or Sanchez to come back...would hate to meet them in a one game playoff for sure. They definitely have the offense to beat anyone. Nationals are good too but a lot will depend if their pitching comes through. Gio Gonzales and Strausburg have not been pitching well at all and they need those two to go along with Zimmerman to make a top three. Bullpen is solid also. Also need Ryan Zimmerman to return soon. Cardinals and Pirates are ok - don't see either one making a run at it - especially St Louis without Yadier Molina and the Pirates without McCutchen. A's definitely top of the heap for pitching but it will be interesting to watch over the next 50 games what losing Cespedes does to their offense. As witnessed by the 2002 Angels - great pitching doesn't always win so I don't see the A's and Dodgers as locks to be in the World Series.
  16. Agree with Eric Notti's "looks like Skaggs is pitching better than most of the league for the role he has". Angels are 10-6 when he starts. Has gone 6+ innings in 13 of his starts. Five innings in two of the other three starts. 2 2/3 in his other start. Two of the losses were blown by the bullpen. One loss was when RA Dickey threw a four hit shut out (0-4 loss - Skaggs went 6 2/3 allowed 3 er's). One loss was to the A's where the score was 3-1 through six innings but Skaggs/bullpen gave up 3 runs in the 7th and the bullpen gave up seven runs after that. Another loss he went seven innings and gave up 2 er's. He did stink in Texas on May when he went 2 2/3 innings and gave up 6 er's - his shortest outing.
