He was picked in the 36th round and was simply drafted for athletic ability. Lots of people think he will never even sniff the majors. Being drafted to the NFL is much different than being drafted in baseball. Most NFL draft picks make it to the NFL, most mlb draft picks never make it.

I love how he goes from being our clean up hitter one day to being designated for an assignment the next. WTH. He should have never been batting clean up.

Jesus here we go again. You do realize there were no third basemen out there right. This deal wasn't that horrible.
The angels so far have received 3.7 WAR out of that deal. Also Freese had the 2nd best year of his career here and the other year was hardly his worst. He did better on average with the Angels than he did with St. Louis.
The Cardinals have received 5.4 War so far.
We are talking about a 1.7 war difference over the course of several years. This was hardly a "horrible deal" as many of you put it.
Also keep in mind that Bourjus was coming of several bad years and we desperately needed a third basemen. Also Grichuk was barely hitting .250 in the AA and barely walked. He wasn't even a top 100 prospect. Salas had good peripherals so they thought they would take a chance on him.

A lot of people are complaining about how we did not keep certain players and how we should have kept them and we would be so much better if we had them. Lets look at the roster that people keep bringing up.
Bartolo Colon - Yes he is solid the last few years. He flamed out with the angels with a 5+ ERA. He than sucked for another 3 years and was even out of baseball for another year. He had to take a minor league deal somewhere because he had nothing left. Nobody predicted he would be good again. If he was a starting pitcher for us all those in between years we probably would not have made the playoffs.
Scot Kazmir - He had two good seasons since leaving the angels. People seem to forget that not a single MLB team wanted him. He was getting lit up playing for the Sugar Land Skeeters. If the independent league was lighting hime up just imagine what an MLB ball club do.
Mark Trumbo - Other than these past few months he is the same player as when he left. He had a couple average war years. We got an all star pitcher (though he sucks now) and a top prospect for him.
Matt Joyce - Not a single one of you wanted to keep Joyce after last year.
Kendry Morales - You mean the Kendry with a negative 1 war and batting .190. I sure do wish we had him (sarcasm). He was good last year. He has been a average league replacement player. His best year ever was with the Angels.
Someone even mentioned Jose Molina. For starters he is retired and his best years were with the angels.
Mike Napoli - Yes we should have kept him, but he is the same player as when he was in Anaheim. He is actually worse now.

I liked almost all of Dipotos trades. The free agent signings were horrible, whether it was his idea or not. Ibanez, Pujols, Hamilton, Blanton.

Same shit every year. Trumbo gets hot and everybody makes a big deal. Every year he hits I. The low 200s with an OBP on or below .300 with 20-30 homers and horrendous defense.

    Good:

Pujols find his old form and hits .300 with 45 bombs and a .400+ OBP

Trout has his best season and has a 50-40 year while winning the gold glove in center field

Richards and Weaver return to prior form and fight it out as the staff aces

The bullpen is the best and baseball and colby rasmus becomes the closer halfway through the year and records 25 straight saves

Choi and Cron both have OPS over .800

Gio turns a 180 and becomes the best fielding second basemen in baseball while hitting a solid .280 with 10 home runs

Simmons goes back to his rookie form and provides 15 homers and a .260 average while winning another gold glove

Escobar has his best season and and has .417 OBP and scores 134 runs

Calhoun posts his first 4+ season

Even though in 2014 with the dodgers he hit .224, he had a .370+ obp and a .6 war in about 70 at bats. Dude was good for the angels. Several 3+ war seasons and a great 7.7 war season.

They were not the best bargain signings, but they are the most impactful. I am not sure how you can argue they are not going to have a big impact. They do another sections where they have the best bargain signings. Kimbrel is lights out, he would be great for anybody.
