Oh I think it's a huge deal. Many of us have wanted starters to go longer for years now. This year is no different and it results in a home run.

Yeah, I don't think anyone here ever "hated" Pujols. I hated the lineup situation caused by him continuing to play well past the point that he was a viable major league player, but I don't hold that against him personally. He was getting paid a lot of money to keep playing, and by all accounts he always worked his ass off to be the best possible player he could be. There's nothing wrong with that on his end. It was the FO that failed to force the issue until today.

At some point it was correct to dislike seeing his name in the lineup.  But I don’t think I have ever actually met anyone that hated the player.
I dislike my wife’s parking skills.  Pretty bad but she just has no idea how bad she is at it.
I guess if I say that out loud I must be full of hate towards my wife.
Seriously our current culture is so fucked up on this subject.  EVERYTHING is hate.
It renders most potentially productive solutions impossible.

It honestly seems like this could have been handled by Albert and the team (maybe) a bit better. Sucks to have to release a HOF player in the final year of his career, but it had to be done. The optics are bad on both sides though. Pujols says he wants to keep playing, and that's just delusional on his part. I just wish someone from the Angels/someone in Pujols' camp could have talked him into taking a coaching position or something like that with the team. I'd have to think the Angels would have created a role for him on the staff to avoid this look.

Yarbrough eventually comes in, and Albert’s thinking “hey, I crush this dude.” Then we lose a frustrating game where nobody can do much at the plate, and Albert’s pissed because he didn’t get so much as a pinch hitting appearance against a guy he hits well historically. The team’s pissed about the loss, Albert is pissed about the loss, his early season struggles, and the (perceived) fact that his team wouldn’t use him in a situation where he thought he could succeed. It’s easy to see how that could blow up a bit in the clubhouse.

I'd have to think they gave him some options. If they didn't have that conversation with him then it's pretty shitty on the FO's part. I'd think at bare minimum they gave him the option to announce his retirement, and I'd guess/hope that they at least offered him some sort of non-player role with the team. A straight release had to be their last option.

Just remarkable people are blasting the Angels for finally releasing this awful player. By keeping him on the roster the last 5 years, or longer, showed they weren’t a serious organization that wanted to win.
releasing him - finally - is a good step to show the team cares more about winning than the ego of 1 legend or some romantic baseball fans.
I want winners. I want players that can help the team win.

One of the greatest hitters of all time. Things didn't work out during his time here but oh well. Wish he was able to have more of a goodbye tour other than just a sweet painting from W.

This is exactly it. If he had signed a 6 year deal with the Angels, he would not have been playing major league baseball after 2017.
