I suppose if I'm being realistic, there won't be any "ace" coming this way.  If it's a trade, it decimates the system.  If it's a free agent, the cost and age of the pitcher is burdensome.

I would hope the Angels have learned a valuable lesson about older free agents and will not be going that way any time soon.

Stick with the kids for pitching.

Now Machado??? Yep, if he's willing to play third and Trout is already extended, then sure.

Machado likely ends up as a 1B in 3 years. I would definitely shy away from locking him up to a 8-10 year deal at $30 mill a year (likely market price).

  2. I like the concept of signing Marwin Gonzalez... obviously depends on price.

I’d be rather surprised if Matheny got another managerial gig. Very surprised.

Machado likely lands the biggest deal in MLB history this fall. 10 years/$280 million may be the starting point. Phillies have the need and financial resources to go higher.

Greinke was fine but he was a rental, deGrom has 2 more years. Haren dad 2 good and average year for us.

Just because deGrom is 30 doesn't mean anything Verlander is 35, Nolan pitched into his mid 40s. Everyone ages differently.

How dare you forget to mention the great, 45-year-old Bartolo Colon.

IMO the best we could hope for (before today) would be a similar deal to what the Rangers got from the Dodgers for Darvish last trade deadline. Willie Calhoun. A top 100 prospect B level prospect. Except Darvish already got TJS over with so that risk isn't there anymore vs Richards and the high risk involved with his arm.

Calhoun was a B prospect when he was moved? Wow, you sure are an incredibly strict grader. Sickels has him as a B+/A- entering this year.

Could be because a lot of pitchers coming from Little League through High School throw a lot of innings year round leading up to them being drafted...add in time in the minors and you have a lot of mileage on an arm at a young age

This. That plus kids know the harder they throw the more $ they will receive when drafted. Radar guns were rarely used until the 1980s.

Why does everybody have so many problems with their elbow on the Angels.  Really that rarely happens anywhere else.  There must be some reason.

Proof the Angels have more TJ surgeries of impact players than most other teams?

could also be a result of the team taking more risk with draft prospects to make up for a lackluster system the past 7 years or so.
