Ahmad Kadyrov was one of the leaders of the independence movement but made nice with Putin and helped Russia stabilize the territory/get rid of the ones who wouldn’t play ball.  Putin installed him as the president but he was assassinated in the early 2000’s.  His son Ramzan took over and is a hyper Putin loyalist.  Basically they’re either very loyal because Putin takes care of them or they’re crushed.

And I’m not absolving Putin and Russia.  I believe they had other options vis a vis the Nato question the other geopolitical concerns:  the water, the Black Sea gas fields, the Baltic nato state etc.  as I said in my comments yesterday.  To me he has taken an enormous risk.   as I said.  It’s all insane brinksmanship all around. 
 
to me the nato ukraine concern is a reasonable and valid one.  We keep pressing. We should not.

I mean of course.  I think what it boils down to is that Putin thinks that he can survive the sanctions.  Dealing with those are preferable to allowing ukraine to move completely out of the Russian sphere.  We will see whether he is right or not.  I think that he has taken a huge gamble here.  I don’t understand enough about ukraine.  Are there enough Russian sympathizers to accept whatever he’s planning ? Probably so in the break away republics but how far west of that ? I don’t know.

I turned on CNN for the first time in probably 6 or 7 years and they had Jackie Spier on more or less advocating that the US needs to consider intervening militarily.  Started getting pissed off and switched over to Netflix and  “a madea homecoming” trailer just started.  The options are bleak.
