John Shay reacted to Chuck in If Trumbo is traded for SP, C.J. Cron a possible replacement
Hypothetical: If Trumbo is traded for SP and there's a bidding war for Corey Hart's services, the Angels will not be able to replace Trumbo's bat in the lineup with the likes of Grant Green or JB Shuck.

Enter in C.J. Cron who I believe could a solid replacement at DH.

I wrote in another thread a few weeks back that Cron and Trumbo had strikingly similar campaigns in Double-A (Arkansas), a tough league, especially at home to provide big power numbers. Cron, while not a guy that walks a lot (much like Trumbo), doesn't strikeout a lot for a guy with his type of power.

I've spoken to two scouts and another gentlemen from this board who spoke to another opposing team's scout and they all shared the same thing, that Cron looked different in the AFL (not just his numbers, his swing and approach). Cron show a bit more lift in his swing and more patience in his approach at the plate, resulting in a .413/.467/.700 line, with 6 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR & 20 RBI in 20 games.

If we're going to get younger and see what our prospects can do, like we did with Calhoun this past season, and if Trumbo draws more interest in trades than Howie Kendrick, as well as money being an issue to replace the likes of Trumbo with a Hart or Morales for DH, Cron could be the guy to replace Trumbo in the lineup and bat 7th or 8th in the order...

    RF Calhoun
    SS Aybar
    CF Trout
    1B Pujols
    LF Hamilton
    2B Kendrick
    3B Freese
    DH Cron
    C   Iannetta/Conger

I believe Cron will provide a higher BA in the big leagues and avoid the long slumps like Trumbo has battled the past three years, but hit 10 fewer home runs (25 HR, 30 max) in the big leagues.

And yet he is younger and has a better ERA+ than Garza in nearly the same amount of innings.   I think some of the hate for Billingsley has to do with the hype when he came up.  He's their Howie Kendrick -- he was supposed to be Kershaw.

Yea our  TOP prospects Dallas Macpherson, Brandon Wood, Casey Kotchman, Jeff Mathis, Trevor Reckling, etc. have all turned out to be Future HOF's.

If they don't make a trade for Greinke or Haren then everybody would have complained about them not making a move. It's always a calculated risk and no matter what direction the Front Office decides, the fans will always find something to second guess and complain about.

I'm starting to think this could be a Kendrick / Ianetta or Conger for Rutledge / Pomeranz  / Prospect type deal

John Shay reacted to RePLAY in Rosenthal: Might be time for Scioscia to leave
No Sir.  I didn't miss anything.  And I'll say it again.  How did we do the past 3 years?  Its quite simple.  We have no time to "let it play our for itself".  Scioscia even with the best 5 starting pitchers in the league couldn't get us in the playoffs...yet a team like OAKLAND CAN?  AGAIN. OAKLAND.  We can't always get the best players in the world in every position (and other teams cant either), but a Manager can sure make it happen.  Why can other teams with a bunch of nobody's do it?  If you don't think 3 years is long enough to "let it play out", I don't know what is....cuz any other manager would have been fired by now.

While the players and Dipoto are also to blame for yet another miserable start, Scioscia's game management is terrible and his voice is no longer heard in that clubhouse.
He needs to go. This team needs a players coach. Someone equipped with an advanced feel for coaching and statistical analysis (like Joe Maddon) in this modern age.
I've heard that some players on the team don't like Mike and his passive aggressive approach. I used to brush off stories I'd hear about former and current players re: Scioscia. Not anymore.
Scioscia continues to do less with much more. That's a telling sign that he's done and his players don't respond to him anymore. He went from a great leader of Angels teams to a constipated face of mediocrity the past four years.

John Shay got a reaction from robblin17 in Since I don't live in California, is the "fire scioscia" out in full force in SoCal?
I think Scioscias ho hum we will get them tomorrow mentality has rubbed off on this team. The team needs a leader, whether a veteran player or a vocal coach. Sometimes a new voice is necessary to get that fire started. A change in coach is now overdue. Not sure who would be a good replacement, but Larry Bowa is a fiery guy who could get this club going although a .490 career win percentage won't satisfy most people here. While they are at it, replace Butcher and bring Mike Hampton from AA to be the pitching coach.
