I don't know how the Angels could have the talent to get those pitchers, but bully for them for trying.

I'm really trying to see what the Angels could possibly offer and I'm drawing a blank.

Yeah we have Neto, O'Hoppe and Schanuel but those guys are our young core. Prospect wise? Ehh?

I guess it comes down to what other teams actually value. My guess is Perry is just doing his job and calling on everyone.

You guys are massively overrating what it will cost to acquire Glasnow and Bieber. Both have injuries and limited innings that limit their value. Also, for one year, they're not going to cost a gigantic amount. Taylor Ward or Luis Rengifo probably functions as the primary piece (with maybe a small throw in) that gets you either one assuming the Rays or Guardians front office likes either of those guys.

Burnes will cost quite a bit more because he's been very good, even with only a year. You'd had to lead with someone like Detmers to get him unless they really did go with a wacky Yelich and Burnes deal, in which case the return would be considerably less.

Cease would also be quite expensive, which is probably why we haven't been linked as much with him. At least Burnes might extend with us since he grew up an Angels fan.

    Let's compare two players, 2021-23:

    Player A: 445 games, .264/.349/.443, 126 wRC+, 3.4 per 150 games

    Player B: 297 games, .265/.346/.449, 121 wRC+, 3.1 WAR per 150 games

They're virtually identical, with Player A being a fraction better. Neither are true stars, but good, above average regulars.

The players are Arozarena and Ward, respectively.

Worth pointing out, though, that Ward's is based on a really good 2022, followed by a barely above league average 2023 which concluded with a significant injury. Before 2022, Ward was that same slightly-better-than-league-average player or worse. Arozarena had an amazing 2020 (only 23 games, though) followed by 3 full of seasons of a consistent 125ish wRC+. Ward *could* be around there, but calling Arozarena a fraction better feels extremely generous to Ward until he proves he can rebound to that level.

Everyone I talk to seems to think he'll stay with us because that's his comfort zone, but will our offer top other suitors? and will Ohtani's desire to be on a perennial winner factor in?

I feel like Arte would have to commit to spending more for Ohtani to stick around. Of course, supposedly he told Rendon the same thing, and...I don't recall significant additional spending.

Someone said Arte's primary motivation is not wanting to see Ohtani on the Dodgers. That feels strangely accurate. Dude can't stand the Dodgers being better.

Way to go out on a limb when the consensus is Ohtani makes his decision either prior to, or just as the winter meetings begin.

    Actually, that isn't quite true.

Apparently it may be another week or even two, depending how credible you find the sources linked (Boob Nightengale says closer to Christmas).

I still can't believe that there are people who truly think the Angels have any shot at signing him.  The reason there would be a total freak out if he did, is that Ohtani is the one who said he wants to play for a team that has a chance to win a Championship.  The 1st question at the press conference to him would be, "If you want to win a Championship, why sign with Anaheim?"  They've shown nothing close to contending for a title.  Can't even make the playoffs as a wild card.

And why do Anaheim fans even want him to sign here?  The team has been awful the entire time he's been in Anaheim.  Sure, they'll possibly be even worse without him, but it's not like he's been some sort of savior for the club.  Having 2 of this generation's greatest ball players, has barely made the Angels into a team capable of a .500 record.

Perhaps this belief that he might sign here, and the desire to have him do so, comes down to the fact of how embarrassing it will be to realize that the Angels let someone of his caliber, get away, and have NOTHING to show for it.  Heck, they could have traded him a year ago, or even a couple of months ago, and at least got something in return.

But the owner is a dip&*it, and really only cares about the billions he's going to make when he eventually sells the team, whether Ohtani is on the roster or not.

I think you stumbled onto the wrong site. You need to take that left turn at Albuquerque for Dodgerswin.

I don’t think he was implying that they would get two outfielders.

Then he'd say left field or right field. He wouldn't say both. Considering the Dodgers of all teams just signed a sub-2 WAR corner outfielder, I'm thinking we don't need more than one.

I doubt it's "down to" such and such teams. This operates under the implied assumption that this person has inside information with Ohtani and his agent.

No team, not even the Angels have any such information, let alone some random beat reporter.

Remember when he signed with the Angels? What was Eppler's reaction? He fell out of his chair. He had no idea which direction Ohtani was leaning.

I think this will be the same thing.

I believe the reports on teams that are out. As far as teams that are in...I mean, it comes down to who has both the interest (pretty much everyone) and the money to make it work. The teams that are out mostly have the money and are out either because they don't think Ohtani is interested or they don't think the price works for them. Now, Passan mentioned Dodgers, Angels, Cubs, Blue Jays, and maybe Giants. We don't know how seriously Ohtani has interest in each of those teams, but they're interested and haven't gotten the sense their opportunity is over. That's the sense in which I understand the report.

As far as the Angels' surprise...I mean, they were one of, what, eight teams on his short list? So it wasn't as surprising as if he'd picked someone not on his list....
