So my thoughts on the game. 
 
When not drinking, and drinking for the first time in a month, and drinking a 6er, glad i'm not driving, becuase I can barely type.

So all of a sudden everyone things Dipoto left a mess.  Kind of like everyone thought Reagins left a mess.  Eppler is going to leave a mess as well.  Why?  the task they have all been strewn upon them is impossible to achieve.  
 
Reagins wasn't a GM.  His biggest weakness is that he walked into the room over matched.  He didn't have gm presence.  But if it's true he was operating under that same directives of those that followed him, did he really create a mess?  
You could actually argue that Reagins got us Trout.  
If the task was to keep the mlb club competitive then then under Arte's influence, he made the Haren trade.  
Under Arte's demand, he made the Wells trade.  
He fired Eddie Bane which was probably the worst move he made.  
Some other not so great moves included the Kazmir trade.  Who knew Kazmir would fall apart.  Maybe that's on the coaching staff.  But the players he gave up didn't amount to squat.  
He didn't sign Crawford which lead to the Wells trade.  Either would have been horrible.  His absence at the winter meetings relative to the crawford signing was probably the first straw of his demise.

Am I arguing he was a good GM?  Hell no.  He was a patsy who couldn't hang, but he actually did some good stuff, and a good chunk of his bad stuff could easily be attributed to Arte.  Easily
 
Dipoto could hang.  He still can.  He's a capable general manager who wasn't perfect.  Name me one GM that is.  
Arte's moves via Dipoto?  Pujols, Hamilton, Greinke trade. 
Some of JD's real moves?  Signing Wilson, locking up Trout, Blanton/Hanson (GRHS)/Burnett/Madson debacle, Freese, Trumbo trade, Howie trade, Morales trade.  The rotating bullpens of hell until 2014
Some of those were solid.  Some gave me gas.  A couple left stains on Chuck's couch.  All were probably within the realm of avg for a decent GM.  
By far JD's biggest weakness was his draft strategy.  The high floor effect worked ok for pitching and a he did a decent job of rebuilding a system that was essentially devoid any arms.  But position players?  There is a very good chance there isn't a major league every day starting position player from any of his drafts.  
But here is a question.  What did he have to work with?  He had almost no international budget.  His scouting and pd budgets were that of a team who pretended like that facet of the game didn't exist.  He didn't do well with what he had, but what he had was crap.  Granted, he doesn't get a pass because he could have done much much better, but even if performed average he probably nets the team one or two additional avg starting position players.  Yes, that would help tremendously at this point, but maybe it makes our farm system in the upper part of the bottom half instead of the bottom third as he running out the door with his hair on fire.  
 
The two GMs above were asked to do things that were unreasonable for even the very best of general managers.  They were set up for failure.  They was no slack in the rope for either of them. 
 
Eppler is now on the highest of tightropes.  His situation is impossible.  And by some accounts, he could have preserved some of our org's currency with the same roster.  He absolutely has to amazing at finding castoffs that provide above replacement value.  He has to own the draft.  
 
On to top of it, he has to work under the same environment that the other GMs did.  One where every other team knows your marching orders.  So when we come calling, the opposition knows that if we don't achieve our goal of keeping the major league club in the hunt, there will be hell to pay.  
 
If you were an opposing gm, think about how differently you'd approach a potential deal with the Angels knowing that Arte is hovering vs. how you'd approach a deal with a team like the cards.  
 
We're playing checkers.  Other teams are playing chess.  
 
If this team not only makes the playoffs, but finds a way to add organizational currency in the process, I will certainly tip my cap to Billy and his crew.  If he is able to succeed with Daniel Nava, Craig Gentry, Al Alburquerque, and a bunch of also rans, then hats off.  Especially considering that he's gonna have to pull off the same magic next year.  And the year after that.........
