  1. Back to the original topic - I wonder how many more times Blanton will have to be lit up before we stop hearing about his "deception" and his "progress", how the ball is coming out of his hand, or any other cliché to try to distract us from the fact that he flat out sucks and has no business wearing a major league uniform. The Angels just need to end this badly failed experiment. Call up some kid from AA. He can't be any worse.
  2. Just saw a teaser for this. There is going to be a remake of the classic Carl Sagan astronomy series from the 1980s, probably my favorite PBS program of all time. Fox is going to run the new series. I'm not sure how much it is going to draw on the old series in terms of visuals or content, and I suppose that there will be some updating, to include discoveries made since the original was filmed. The series will be titled Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. Sagan's widow Ann Druyan, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson (who will fill Sagan's role as presenter) and producer Steven Soter (who was involved in the original series) are behind the project. Druyan and Seth MacFarlane will be executive producers. Like the original, there will be 13 episodes. The first episode airs Sunday at 9:00 PM Eastern/Pacific. Cosmos on TV website
  3. What has happened in this thread is exactly why I usually treat threads like this like live hand grenades. Some people don't care one way or the other, others have very firm beliefs, and people at the opposite ends seem to dig in. I fall in the indifferent category but I understand that some people don't, for reasons of their own. I just leave it at that.
  4. Well, not everything I read is accurate. The Colts certainly seemed to know what they were doing, so I will go with your version.
  5. I don't think so. I checked the 2009 draft, the draft that Mike Trout was part of. Here are the first round draft picks that year. Besides Trout and Steven Strasburg, how many has anyone even heard of? 1 Stephen Strasburg Washington Nationals Right-handed pitcher San Diego State 2 Dustin Ackley Seattle Mariners Outfielder North Carolina 3 Donavan Tate San Diego Padres Outfielder Cartersville High School (GA) 4 Tony Sanchez Pittsburgh Pirates Catcher Boston College 5 Matt Hobgood Baltimore Orioles Right-handed pitcher Norco High School (CA) 6 Zack Wheeler San Francisco Giants Right-handed pitcher East Paulding High School (GA) 7 Mike Minor Atlanta Braves Left-handed pitcher Vanderbilt 8 Mike Leake Cincinnati Reds Right-handed pitcher Arizona State 9 Jacob Turner Detroit Tigers Right-handed pitcher Westminster Christian Academy (MO) 10 Drew Storen Washington Nationals[Compensation 1] Right-handed pitcher Stanford 11 Tyler Matzek Colorado Rockies Left-handed pitcher Capistrano Valley High School (CA) 12 Aaron Crow Kansas City Royals Right-handed pitcher Fort Worth Cats/Missouri 13 Grant Green Oakland Athletics Shortstop Southern California 14 Matt Purke* Texas Rangers Left-handed pitcher Klein High School (TX) 15 Alex White Cleveland Indians Right-handed pitcher North Carolina 16 Bobby Borchering Arizona Diamondbacks Third baseman Bishop Verot High School (FL) 17 A. 6. I knew that, but I wasn't sure how many devices can actually take advantage of the third band on AC routers. If the number is minimal, it probably wouldn't be worth the extra coin to go AC. With things like game machines and DVD players, it may just be a matter of finding the right dongle. I just bought a BluRay player for the bedroom that has an ethernet port for a hard wired connection, but I have seen dongles that work with such devices.
  7. A spokesman for Rawlings said "I don't understand it. Overall, hitting throughout baseball is pretty much the same as it was a year ago, but we have sold twice as many baseballs as we did in 2013."
  8. I don't see how anyone can use the word "depth" and the name Joe Blanton in the same sentence. All Blanton does is fill a uniform. I also don't get the argument that you have to leave the 40-man roster alone to keep a pinball machine like Blanton on it. It doesn't matter what else we have. Almost any pitcher in the organization can match what Blanton is giving us. Probably several guys on this board could.
  9. I remember reading that the Indianapolis Colts agonized over whether to take Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf with the first pick, and they didn't decide until right before they made the pick. Football history would have been a bit different had they made a different choice. Going into that draft, most experts agreed that they were pretty much even. History turned out a little differently. I agree that this QB class is overrated. Honestly I don't see Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Manziel having long term success in the league. I would be fine with Jacksonville taking A. J. McCarron or Derek Carr in a later round. Teddy Bridgewater reminds me of Geno Smith, and Johnny Manziel reminds me of Doug Flutie.
  10. As long as the newer tech sticks and is actually adopted, that is fine. I once bought a quadraphonic receiver, and we all know how that went.
  11. Point #2 is the one that catches my attention the most. With far fewer devices (and competing transmissions) in the 5 gHz range, theoretically at least, there should be less interference with the transmission.
  12. Not very often. My main concerns are internet speeds and streaming video without screen freezes. Sometimes the G router does fine on Netflix, and other times it seems to stop every few minutes. I know that a lot of variables go into this, but a G router is pretty clearly overtaxed with these kinds of data demands.
  13. Ervin seems to have grossly overestimated the market for his services. If we all recognize that he is good every other year, you can bet that GMs around baseball know it as well. There are a lot of teams with pitching needs, and he hasn't even gotten a nibble.
  14. Jacksonville (more accurately former GM Gene Smith, who blew more high draft picks than Carter has little pills), traded up to take Gabbert, so sure was he that Gabbert was (1) the answer, and (2) gone before they picked otherwise. I saw Gabbert play at Missouri as well, and one thing that struck me was he was very inaccurate when throwing deep, which NFL QBs must be able to do. His deep passes were primarily fling it and hope that one of his guys was able to take it away from the defender. I watched the first round of the draft the year he was selected, and I was horrified that Jacksonville not only took him, but traded up to do it. It has turned out exactly as I expected. I'm not a big fan of taking QBs in the first round, especially when you have as many other needs as Jacksonville does. Occasionally one pans out, but most of them don't. If they don't fix the offensive line in particular, it won't matter who is behind center.
  15. But that line says nothing about his veteran presence or the way the ball is coming out of his hand.
  16. Considering that Bud Selig once publicly stated that Las Vegas was a possible destination for the relocating Montreal Expos, that was probably laid to rest some time ago.
  17. Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler.
  18. This is one of the worst pieces of news that anyone can ever get. My condolences to the Hill family.
  19. The judge's comments today were encouraging for the parents' case. The judge said that he didn't want to set a precedent under which parents were reluctant to lay down rules in their own home for fear of being sued later. He also mentioned two drinking episodes after which she got in trouble at school, and said that it was reasonable for the parents to lay down rules after something like that happened. I have seen some screwy rulings come out of courts in this country, but from what I have heard from the judge in this case, he isn't some wacko who will issue an off-the-wall ruling that will screw parents everywhere.
  20. Just saw on Fox Sports that the Jaguars are interested in Michael Vick. While he wouldn't be a long term solution to anything, their quarterback situation is as bad as anyone's in the NFL. They wound up with Chad freaking Henne as a starter after completely squandering a first round draft pick on Blaine Gabbert, whose fourth quarter NFL QB rating last season was one point above mine. This only makes sense if they plan to load up on defense and offensive line, and/or they don't believe that any of the available QBs are difference makers in their situation. I really hope that they don't go for the gimmick and take Johnny Manziel, because I don't see him being successful long term in the pros. I would love to see them take Jadeveon Clowney, but I have a feeling that he will be gone by the time Jacksonville picks at #3.
