If you won't consider a guy like Darvish where you take money on for an older guy then it's gonna be next to impossible to add a potential front of the rotation arm.  No amount of prospects is going to pry away a young front of the rotation starter who isn't owed a lot of money.

I agree with you btw that there is tremendous risk with Darvish and his age relative to what he's owed.  I wouldn't trade any of our top prospects for him either.  But the reality is that if that's the Angels stance, then they likely aren't going to acquire a guy who can pitch at the top of the rotation.

But I may be one of the few who is ok with that.  I personally feel like we can get away with having a solid rotation as opposed to what we saw with teams like the Nats or Astros a couple years ago.  I don't think people realize how rare it is to be able to put something like that together.  Almost historically good.

My main premise is that the Angels need to avoid the Teheran's, the Harvey's and Cahills, and Allens and Giavotellas and Rafael Ortegas and Danny Espinosas or Ben Revere/Maybin combos or Valbuenas (RIP), or Cozarts or Chris Young types or getting -2 WAR from a position or that pitcher with an ERA of 9 that makes half a season worth of starts or pitches half a seasons worth of innings out of the pen.

You're never going to completely get away from that so having it at a spot or two is understood.  Just not at like 5 or 6 spots.

I just don't think Darvish is the investment you want. I don't think the Angels need a 35 year old pitcher on the downside of his career. In 2018 and 2019 he had an over 4 era and this year he had a 2.23 era. If I were to guess next year a year older and a hopefully full season, covid being gone and all, I would bet he would be around the same numbers he put up in 2018 and 2019 and not what he put up in a shortened 2020. The Angels can't accept that level of risk, they need more sure things than another over paid guy who may or may not be injury prone.

And if you aren’t paying Bauer any money after his 35th birthday, you probably aren’t signing him.  He’s getting 6-7 years.

Maybe. He's 29 now offer him more money until the 35th year. There's zero chance if I am the owner I want to be stuck with an older player with a big salary who's at higher risk for injury. I will let someone else take on that risk. I like Bauer and think he's awesome but the same thing I said about Trout and Cole etc applies. I wouldn't pay anyone over the age of their 35th birthday season.

I wouldn’t trade either of those guys for Darvish. But if we are to put a crazy high value on Bauer based on how good he was in 2020, then you should put a very high value on Darvish.  He was great this past year.  He’s also going to cost $8-10 million less than Bauer per year, which frees up more money to improve elsewhere.

I don’t put a crazy high value on Darvish for one simple thing he’s older and signed to more years. I wouldn’t trade young guys for an old pitcher. I value Bauer because of how good he is and his age. That being said I wouldn’t offer him any amount of money over his 35th year.

I just checked out Yu Darvish's deal and although he's 34, it's very reasonable. He's owed $59 million over the next 3 seasons. $22M in 2021, $19M in 2022, and $18M in 2023. If the Cubs are open to dealing him, the Angels need to be all over this. Build a package around Adell or Marsh.

Zero chance on the planet I’d trade anyone for a 34 year old pitcher. None what so ever. The likelihood he gets hurt is high. Why would the Angels trade Adell or Marsh who are young and haven’t even hit their prime yet and not even close. for a pitcher who’s on the decline of his career? Come on now.

This is the thinking of most people who buy and wear Patagonia, or North Face puffy coats. They simply see the name and want to be part of an adventure they will never have because it happened some place else with other people.

    I prefer Carhart.

You prefer another expensive brand jacket I am confused? I don't own North Face Patagonia or Carhartt. But if you like Carhartt more power to you. I don't like any of them, I prefer not spending 500 bucks on a snowboard jacket I will gladly buy them on amazon and get the knock off version, and spend my money on lift tickets and drinks at the bar.

Hey, he won twice and at places with history against them -- so he has scoreboard.  Still, i think he's given way too much credit for those two wins and considered this all-mighty great GM mind.  What did he leave those teams and their organization like when he left?  I think the Cubs especially is odd -- they won, but they have greatly underperformed since.  they were setup perfect with some great young pieces coming up and just starting.....and done nothing but gone backwards.  But really, it's a perception thing for me.  Good...maybe really good.  But an all-timer who everything he touches turns to gold? -- umm, i think the shine has come off of that and shown some imperfections among the greatness.  But what the heck do i know....just one guy's (possibly wrong) opinion.

Theo at the age of 46 has won 3 titles and the team he left in place in Boston won another one if I am not mistaken shortly after he left with the team he constructed. The guys been at the top of baseball organizations for 17 years and has won 3 titles. I am genuinely curious because I don't know the answer, who else would you put in his circle over the last let's say 20 years? Cashman with 4 titles? Friedman has won 1 with many more probably to come. Beane who I view as one of the best GM's hasn't won any so I don't know?

The Angels already experienced a GM who quit.  What makes you think hiring another GM experienced in quitting is good move?

There is a story as to why Theo "resigned."  I would like to know what it is before jumping on that bandwagon.  Remember, Theo essentially thought Maddon was the problem in Chicago and replaced him with someone more suitable.  One year later, he resigns.....hmmmmm

    No thanks.

I don't care what his reasons are why he quit or why he was "pushed out" All I know is the guy wins and builds winners. The Red Sox were built by this guy who won multiple titles, then was "pushed out" "quit" went to the Cubs won there and "quit" "pushed out" I would hire him in a second. To be what exactly I don't know, I am excited about our new GM. But like I said I wouldn't hesitate to add more smart baseball people to this Angels organization. I'd go after Beane as well. Smart baseball people the both of them.

So you'd fire Maddon so that Epstein could join the organization?

Yes yesterday. Do I think that happens. Absolutely not. But personally I'd rather not have a 66 year old manager. I would rather my front office have as many smart people as possible. But this isn't the reason I started this thread. I saw he resigned and just want Theo to be apart of this organization. Hell I'd go after Billy Beane and Theo to try to build the greatest front office in baseball.

Obviously not going to happen but it would never happen even if we didn't have a GM already. Maddon and he don't get along and that's why we got Joe to come to the Angels.

If it were between Maddon and Theo. I'd sign Theo 1000 times in a row. Maddon and managers mean nothing to me. Gm's and front office personnel are far more important for the present and future of a franchise than a field manager.

  10. He officially stepped down from Cubs. I know we just got our new guy. But I would love if there was any possible way Arte can sign this guy to make him apart of the Angels organization. Can never have enough smart people.

I'm happy to hear she will get the chance after being an assistant with other organizations. There weren't a lot of these jobs open this offseason. I'm glad she got one of them. I think it remains to be seen how good the MIA job is, though. Will it be a situation where they can keep their homegrown talent (Stanton, Yelich), or will they still sell off players like that because of cost?

Stanton it's looking more and more like the right call to sell him off that guy is consistently injured. Yellich may be a big regret though.

She's consonant with success. NGL, a big miss

So we've already failed with our selection of GM a day after it's been announced. Got it. 1 she wasn't one of the people we interviewed so we didn't miss on anything. 2 we have no idea how our guy will do or how she will do, hope she does well but who the heck knows on either of the hires at the moment right now it's just well wishes and hopes. 3 I don't know what NGL means.... 4 Go Angels we made our hire there is no going back now. Wait a couple years and then get back to me.

For all the hand-wringing that we were either going to hire someone directly tied to Maddon (McLeod) or someone Arte knew well from before (Holland), it's cool to see we went outside the organization and hired someone with no ties to, well, anyone currently with our team.

With a lot of our budget already tied to significant contracts, it'll be up to Minasian to figure out ways to draft + develop and find value on the market.  Given that he worked for two organizations that don't have big budgets (TOR, ATL) - I would say he is well-positioned to utilize the principles he has learned to find talent.

I like the first move he made (signing Wong) as a low-risk deal that could potentially fill a need for us.  There is a ton of work to do, but I have high hopes for him.

For me that's kind of what I wanted for a GM I wanted someone who came from a lower budget team who's done well. Like how Friedman went from TB to LA. I don't think big budget teams is necessarily the way to win in today's baseball. It's about building a team from within and not just buying the older free agent the Pujols, Hamilton, Upton's (yes I know he wasn't a free agent) of the world. I've said it numerous times that I wouldn't sign anyone to contracts past when they are 34 or 35 and that's typically what you have to do with these big time free agents. I am excited to see what "the Minasian" can do for this club and help build a sustainable winner again.

just for the sake of accuracy in the thread. he was arrested in february, but was not charged until october due to a paperwork snaffu. also, the white sox knew about it ahead of the hiring, or so it seems.

The White Sox can know about it. But it means nothing till the media and their fans know about it. Luckily baseball is in its dead zone period and no one cares about the White Sox.

  15. If Ohtani can stay healthy he can continue to pitch, but if there are set backs and he can't get through the season. If I were the Angels I would have the discussion with him about playing a position and just focusing on hitting. The Angels need people they can rely on and being available every day is important.

Stroman isnt a true "ace" per say, thats true, but he keeps the ball down and makes a lot of sense.   he would certainly perhaps be our ace.   It will depend on the money of course someone said AAV of like 17, i think he goes higher in this crop personally or he should just take the QO.   But lets say you get him for 20ish maybe... 4/80 or something, it might make sense of the rest arent out there or are simply too damned expensive.
Im on the Bauer train as much as anyone, but are we on his?  I dont think he comes here for the money, we will have to fill in other blanks to convince him.  He wants to win, period, and were not there with just him.

I disagree I think with him or Cole last year we are a serious contender. The depth of pitching is there just minus the "ace" the offense is definitely there and as we know with bullpen it's hit or miss. What we have missed is the top of the line pitching which we haven't had in what seems like decades. I think with an ace the rest can fill in nicely.
