  1. MLB Lock out - what the consensus ? Season going to start on time? Going to miss about half of Spring Training? Looking at another 'half-season' type year with Opening Day sometime in June/ July ?
  2. we're from the government and here to help only the government can come up with a scenario where the state agency whose mission it is to increase affordable housing seeks to prevent a development project that creates actual housing and a project which finally might pencil out on acreage in which projects have been proposed and failed for years - all while ensuring that a key economic component of the city -- the Angels franchise - remains in Anaheim for 50 years. GEEZ.
  3. my initial thought exactly. If Loup is signed to complement Iglesias - great. But if to somehow replace him and then add 'multiple cheaper relievers' - YES - that's a concern given the Halos front office history on all this.
  4. maybe it's just me not wanting to believe the reality of the cost of MLB rotations. I mean Syndergaard was once a near ace type pitcher but two innings over two years, yeah I am sure the Halos have scouted his work outs and he probably even did a bullpen session for the Halos front office personnel to watch before singing him (I hope so) -- but $21 million for one year for an innings limited pitcher who has not pitched competitively at the big league level (did he make some minor league rehab appearances at the end of 2021 ?) seems a but rich for me for a team like the Halos that has not been willing to commit to signing top line starters but instead look to one year patch work deals. I would think an incentive laden (G, IP etc.) would be the better approach towards a pitcher coming off a long. lay off due to injury/ surgery. But that's me. I guess we picked up the NY Mets lefty reliever today - $7.5 million a year for two years with a third year club/. player option ? that sounds ok and bolsters our pen -- I hope he's signed to complement Iglesias and not be his replacement.
  5. next contract with his 'new' team having utilized the $21 million one year contract as his rehab year. Thanks Angels.
  6. I could see Syndergaard perhaps not being ready in April / May. - pitch in about mud-June - do fairly well and then sign a multi-year deal elsewhere - perhaps back with the NY Mets.
  7. Well, we shall see - the comparison part is to Kazmir using the Halos contract time and money to rehab and working that into at least two more lucrative contracts for teams other than the Anglels where he was in the starting rotation and did fairly well to some really good starts. Sure he fizzled out (with the Giants but was actually in the 2021 post-season series for them as an 'opener' in one of the playoff games). Point well taken is that Syndergaard is 18 to 23 months post years TJ surgery and YES some pitchers seem to have a bionic stronger arm after TJ. Kazmir was a NY Mets phenom prospect who went to Tampa Bay in a trade.
  8. $21 million for ONE YEAR for a guy who was once lights out but has only pitched two innings in two years? Why do I feel like this is Scott Kazmir all over again (another former Met phenom prospect at one time). Kazmir was last seen pitching as an 'opener' for the Giants in the 2021 post- season. but back when he was signed by the Halos to a pretty lucrative two year deal as I recall. He pitched a bit for us but then got hurt and then was moving slowly in rehab. He was in rehab for almost a year and a half - when he came back , lost velocity , was criticized for not working hard/ smart enough to develop a better repertoire of pitches (he was once a fireballing phenom and with Tampa Bay was among the AL league leaders in K's for about a four year period). Long story longer, Kazmir rehabbed on the Halos dime , seemed washed up, and wound top resurfacing in Oakland rotation and did well enough to ink another lucrative contract with the LA Dodgers, bounced around a bit and was just in the post-season with the SF Giants - kind of like a bad penny (or a lot of them based one the Angels and Dodgers contracts he signed after he was 'washed uo" So - with this latest signing -Syndergaard (spelled wrong) seems about to do the same thing -- get paid $21 million to rehab with the Halos - perhaps have moments of his old self - enough to sign a big contract elsewhere in 2023. Meanwhile, the Halos commit a large part of their 2022 budget to the guy so forget signing some of the big names.
  9. reading through this thread brings up that awful period in Halos history when Collins' job was on the line and he got 'extended' by Bavasi but then quit very shortly thereafter. Of course, my favorite player on the Halos was DiSar - who wasn't that good of a shortstop - frankly - had virtually little range -- but nonetheless was a spark plug type player -- the Angels just played better when he was on the field and in the line up and that was clearly shown in '95 when DiSar went down with the Halos having a 10 game lead in the AL West in mid-August -- and as we are all too painfully aware -- lost it all and had to play catch up for force that one game playoff in Seattle (at the Kingdome at the time) that went south quick (first or second inning - was it a Langston throwing error to first on bunt? anyway, the game was out of reach by about the third inning and the Halos were headed home to watch the post-season on the couch, The Terry Collins debacle came later.
  10. GEEZ - this is going back into the vault. Had not heard about the real reason behind the 'weight lifting' shoulder injury as posted in this thread -- in retrospect it now makes sense - especially with Disney folks at the helm. But Edmonds was kind of a jerk in the club house -- didn't he and Chuck Finley have some sort of falling out? The worst part of the trade was getting Ken Bottenfield in return - he was to be the answer to our pitching issues like so many before him and since - out did not work out so well - I think he spent maybe two seasons with us. But we also got Adam Kennedy from the Cardinals in that deal - so that made it palatable. I think the worst thing Edmonds did was give that awful interview to Sport Illustrated at the start of Spring Training when he reported to the Cardinals training camp in Florida -- he made a bug display of throwing his equipment bag with the Halos logo into the trash can and then trashing the Angels. All unnecessary. That being said Edmonds catch in KC in CF was perhaps one of the greatest catches of all time and he made highlight reel catches on a regular basis (much like Torii Hunter did a few years later for the Angels). I thought it was hilarious om 2002 when the Halos won't all. Edmonds showed up at the ballpark and in the media as being a big "I'm for the Angels ' guy when what I could remember was that Sports Illustrated interview where he went out of his way to trash the Halos and the entire organization. Oh well - he still goes down as one of the best defensive outfielders in Halos history.
  11. Yes - it makes sense but it's going cost some money He pretty much resurrected his career in 2021 and now his value Is up. But Halos had a real closer for the first time in a while.
  12. Is there any possible doubt who the AL MVP is for 2021? Guy has the most amazing season since Babe Ruth from way back when and there's an actual debate about who the AL MVP is? unreal. Shohei Ohtani -- should be unanimous. Cy Young? Shohei may get a vote or three. NL Cy Young -- Corbin Burnes of Milwaukee seems to be the media favorite? How can that be? Urias of the Dodgers is the only 20 game winner in either league, stellar ERA , lot of strike outs. 20-3 record. The fact that Buehler and Sherzer of the Dodgers will also get votes may detract from Urias vote total -- but GEEZ -- any doubt that Urias is the NL Cy Young Award winner for 2021 ???
  13. Scherzer worth spending a boat load on - pitching is where we should spend our money short stop ? who's put there? Dodgers may trade Seager now that they have Trea Turner.
  14. Iglesias was a tremendous defensive SS -- why we let him go is beyond me. I guess because he was on a one year deal and we were not going to re-sign him - we let him walk now with a month or two left in the season and got a month's salary savings - although we likely paying everything over the MLB minimum for the rest of 2021. Boston snaps him up and if nothing else, he can provide some late inning defensive help. I really don't understand this move by the Halos Front Office but it really underscores that they've put out the white flag for 2021. Oh well.
  15. New PBP guy Rich Waltz. Seems to be doing fine IMO,' Still kind of bewildered as to why the Halos decided to jettison Daron Sutton after a half a season at the All Star Break. If Waltz was available in February/ March why didn't the Halos get him on board back then.? Rich (Tennessee) Waltz -- sure he hasn't heard that one before !! LOL !! I think Waltz and Gubi seem to mesh better -- there were some back and forth banter between Gubi and Sutton that last series right before the ASG break that sounded like there was tension there. And then Sutton made some comment - can't remember the specific comment now - I was half listening/ watching the game as I do while on line doing other stuff - like posting here -- and I just remember stopping and wondering - 'what did Suttoin just say? not sure if management will be happy with that......" next thing - in a stealth like announcement - designed not to get too much attention during the ASG break - Sutton is OUT.
  16. Some Board posters upset probably thinking Halos did not do enough at deadline time. Well, we didn't have much that other teams wanted. The big surprise was closer Igelsias (spelled wrong probably) still with the Halos -- he was probably the Halo player with the most made value up until 1 pm today and he's on a one year contract. I guess the thinking is two fold: 1. ) we're still in the Division race/ wild car hunt and need our closer (who has been an upgrade at that position for us this year) ; 2.) He likes it here and will agree to sign a new deal with the Angels in the off-season as a F/A perhaps a one plus one deal - although - other teams could easily out bid us for his services. ALSO - and this must be on Arte's mind and all the owners' minds -- the chances for a work stoppage in 2022 are about 50/50 right now - the less commitments/ contracts made for 2022 right now - the better - from the front office bottom line perspective. As for the deals made -- Heaney and Watson -- both guys gone at the end of the year - it's the old Elvis song "It's Now or Never" in terms of getting anything of value for them. I don't think the guys we got were anything close to top of the charts prospects but they are pitchers who will compete with all the other pitchers (mainly college level ball experienced pitchers) the Angels have drafted this year - -which I think is a good move - in my book you can never draft enough quality pitching and I prefer the college ball players who seem more mature and advanced to be able to get to the Show quicker than the flame throwers right out of high school ball. We received players in those deals who will be under club control for up to five seasons, perhaps more -- and that's what the front office (not just the Halos franchise) seems to be focused on this year. MLB economics have come down to 1 to maybe 4 superstar type contracts on a team, some other good contracts for rotation guys and then the major league minimum to fill out the roster. Except for the Dodgers, Yankees and now maybe San Diego as well - that seems to be the thinking of MLB front offices. The looming 2022 work stoppage not making the owners any more 'generous' either.
  17. WTF is DiPoto doing here? Trades the M's closer to a AL West Division rival who happens to be leading the Division -- I guess he gets that INF guy Toro who might be good for two rentals -- but Joe Smith ? (DiPoto has been there done that with the Halos -- and Smith turned out to be a huge disappointment after decent pen work in Cleveland). I guess Graveman is a rental as is Montero but the Mariners just gave the Astros assistance in the pen (where the Astros and every contender seems to need help) with those two guys. Seattle fans probably not very happy with DiPoto right now. Meanwhile - Houston locks down an AL West title.
  18. Hey FOLKS -- we're getting to trade deadline time. Halos have had a mediocre first half (although we have certainly seen worse over our time here) and how have reached .500 - or hovering near or just above it lately. Are we Sellers (and what do we have to sell ? Sandoval?) or Buyers ?(the Halos and every other team in MLB needs pitching - rotation and pen help - such deadline deal help - even rentals - will be EXPENSIVE). Do we have a realistic shot of catching Oakland and Houston - perhaps making the playoffs as one of the expanded also ran Wild Card teams -- is a one game playoff worth mortgaging the Halos future and giving up what few top pitching prospect help we may have coming up? Or - do we sell what little we have - pitchers like Sandoval (who could fetch some value , I would think); maybe Cobb -- I don't know -- I don't think we have much to sell other than those guys. We're not dealing Ontani (no trade clause anyway) Trout (franchise player), Rendon (big contract) I wouldn't trade Ward -who seems to be coming on well at the plate and from watching him just looks more comfortable at the plate. What does everyone think ? And, really, if the front office is NOT going to lay out some payroll commitment more than one year (need more like three year deal) to invest in some starting pitching for 2022 - does it matter much of what we do anyway?
  19. TOO BIG of a hole -- typo. Mike Cameron - forgot DAD's first name. He had some good seasons. Top season probably hit 25-29 HRs or so -- still - earned the name Mike Kameron because of all the K's
  20. I can'r believe he has a kid playing in MLB -- time flies - seems like he just retired not that long ago -- and folks on this board were debating whether DAD Cameron was worth signing. I always felt DAD Cameron had to big of a hole in his swing and struck out way too much -- in fact, I am sure DAD Cameron had seasons where he struck out 125-150 times. DAD watching DAZ play is a pretty cool sight to see, though. The 'old' man looks like he could still play.
  21. Season over time? Trout out for six weeks? Halos pitching failing (except for Ohtani) at all levels - back of the rotation and set up pen guys in particular. each year the same? this is getting old - once again.
  22. I always thought Pujols should have stayed in St. Louis - the Angels deal was not that much more --and had he stayed with St, Louis, he'd be an icon there in American's best baseball city - with Musial, Gibson and Brock. The Cards used the Pujols dividend/salary savings well -- the Cards front office is a pretty stingy bunch - they're not that far off from being Billy Beane in Oakland -- Pujols started at 1B tonight for the Dodgers and he hit fourth in the line up. As of the 7th inning Pujols is 1-3, rbi single and a strikeout. I have no ill will towards Pujols and hope he plays well for LA Dodgers to finish out his HOF career on a high note.
